In an era where technology has become a prominent part of our daily lives, it is safe to assume that majority of our society has advanced as well over the years. Ranging from means of communication, to personal and business transactions, appliances, and gadgets— humanity has indeed utilized our resources for the improvement of our state of living. The access to countless sources of information and technological advancements, especially Social Media, has become an integral part of our everyday lives. However, like others, there are both benefits and downsides to this development.
So join us as we introduce ten rules in using social media wisely.
First off, what is Social Media?
— According to the Merriam-Webster definition, Social Media is defined as forms of electronic communication (such as websites for social networking and microblogging) through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content (such as videos).
Majority of the world had already been exposed in these platforms, however, not all of the them use it approvably. Thus, this is where rules come in to do damage control.
1. Don't violate copyright, fair use, or financial disclosure laws.
The more you use a copyrighted work (and the more you use was), the less your own work can be considered fair use. Finally, if your new work takes away from the income of the original copyright owners, you're unlikely able to use the "fair use" defense.
When posting something on your social media page, it should always be remembered that one must always cite everything borrowed back to its owner. Aside from the fact that using someone else's ideas without permission is a punishable crime (R.A 8293 Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines, as well in other countries), by citing it, you are acknowledging the time and effort expended to generate those ideas into reality.
2. Know the ideal amount of social to post.
Too much of everything is bad.
And that applies to social media as well. If you aim to reach out to your desired audience using social media, it is not beneficial if you post things that are unrelated to your message. However, knowing whether you are posting too much or not enough is not possible. Which is why, you need to take your social audience into account. Every social media platform has what they call a post lifespan, which mostly depend on its algorithm. Taking note of what takes a priority in a user's newsfeed, and how long a post's lifespan is, are some of the first few steps in spreading your influence to your desired audience.
3. Be mindful of whatever you publish in social media platforms.
Language is the dress of thought.
— Samuel Johnson
Since this technology is easily accessible, it means that more people will be able to see information, both desirable and not. Which is why, before one can think of publishing something online, they must think meticulously to avoid misinterpretations, mind the language used or to be used in a social post.
Keep in mind that whatever you publish will be public for a long time, possibly for your entire career.
4. Understand that your sense of humor isn’t universal.
Simply minding one's own business is more offensive than being intrusive. Without ever saying a word one can make a person feel less-than.
— Criss Jami
Unless you’re sending a private message, your social media posts reach well beyond your friends and family members. People will always find a fault in everything you do, as long as your post had triggered something to an extent.
You must always consider what type of people your audiences are, and use this knowledge to your advantage. Avoid posting intentionally offensive content. Remember, technology, in general is a double-edged sword. It would only take one click make or break what you were trying to build in front of the media. This doesn’t mean you can’t use well-placed humor in your posts – just make sure it’s appropriate.
5. Play by the rules.
There are rules you follow here not because you want to, but because you have to.
— Stephen Chbosky
Every platform has its own set of rules for behavior, and there's no harm in abiding by them. When rules are properly set and followed, they provide a stable environment and human co-existence in a community.
6. Separate business and personal accounts.
Reputation takes years to build but can collapse in a very short span of time.
If you are planning in using social media networking sites for business purposes and promotional campaigns, it is utterly necessary to keep one's personal social media separate from business. Like we said before, what you publish online will stay in your timeline for a long period of time, and it can affect what your potential clients view you and your company as a whole.
7. Don't feel as if you have to be in every network.
Less is more.
And this can be applied to using social media as well. The more platforms you sign yourself in to, the more time you'll need to manage it all. You can reduce the list by compressing it into the networks you are most likely to be active on.
8. Avoid sharing extreme viewpoints.
Opinion is the medium between knowledge and ignorance.
— Plato
Posting about controversial topics and political arguments can lead to heated and unnecessary debates, and can sometimes be viewed as incitement. For example, in the Philippines now that the House Bill No. 6875, or the Anti-Terrorism Act of 2020 has been approved, press freedom is not what it used to be, and protesters in social media are also being monitored. This does not only apply here, but as well as on several other countries. One wrong move, can lead to your downfall if one is not cautious enough.
Although, it does not mean you are being subjected to just keep silent and keep your opinions to yourself. We advise that you should be careful in voicing them. Choose subtle, but meaningful words. Though, if you have nothing good to say, it would be best if you would not say anything at all.
9. Do not share intimate information about yourself.
Information such as phone numbers, addresses, hometowns or even birthdays are sensitive information that should be shared to your most trusted people. Also avoid sharing about when you will not be home especially if it is for long periods of time. Nobody knows if strangers lurking on the dark side of the internet are just waiting for the right moment to strike. These can easily lead to identity theft and other crimes if not managed properly.
10. Only post or tag photos of fans, customers, or employees with permission.
Privacy is dead, and social media holds the smoking gun.
— Pete Cashmore
But it doesn't have to be this way. Everyone has a right to keep things to themselves. Without privacy, there is no point in being an individual.
To generalize, you should not post or tag photos of others without their permission. Not only is it disrespectful but also an invasion of personal privacy.

Especially in an age where long-distance communication is important and that secure data transaction poses of great importance in our daily lives, rules are needed to lessen the mishaps happening in users as of today.
