“Indeed. Don’t get me wrong, I’d probably enjoy training some of the new recruits,” he insisted. Asher would’ve loved to be able to train new aurors, watch them grow, and push them towards the right directions. “I just don’t think they’d find much enjoyment in a trainer that wears a constant look of discontentment. Or, my thoroughness with certain procedures.” He shook his hands politely at the woman. “I’m fine.”
He stopped his train of thought when she asked her question. His father had always pushed Asher towards greatness, so something less prestigious than an auror wouldn’t have been an option. “I considered becoming an Unspeakable, actually. Admittedly, my curiosity had pulled me towards that one. You would do about anything to just see what’s down there, you know? But, I knew a life of complete secrecy would drive me completely mad. Honestly, I don’t know how my sister does it.”
Asher crossed his arms for a moment, as if thinking again. “That’s about it, actually. I fear anything else would’ve proved to bore me.” Deciding to push passed talking about himself, he gaze shifted from the ground to Beau. “Are you excited to be going home? Even if it’s just for a business trip?”
"Being thorough teaches them not to make small mistakes." Beau commented, remembering her first few days of training and wondering how anyone could possibly do this job for the rest of their lives. "I am sure if I had you as a mentor, I would appreciate any feedback you gave me. I think Mackenzie might feel similar, she mentioned spending some time there on her next rotation possibly."
She nodded, understanding perfectly. It had taken her years to earn the security clearance to learn most of the things hidden away behind the dark doors and looming corridors of the department of mysteries, even now the details were sporadic and often cryptic. "Neither do I."
Was she? It was difficult to explain. "Well, the french ministry seem to prefer dealing with me directly, and I suppose not having to deal with translators makes things simpler. We'll be staying in the house I grew up in, it is far more secure than a hotel. Protective spells for a mile radius still provided by the French ministry, one perk of the job."
"First law of Wand Lore Madam. The fifty fifth one is much more interesting if I am honest: one must always love and adore their work. If this is not completed, the end result of the wand will not be up to par. Now that is something I have always loved and followed throughout my journey" As he finished his sentence, he wiped a few tears from his eyes and wiped his nose on a small tissue which he had shoved up his shirt sleeve.
"Oh, I do not doubt that for one second. It would be impossible to have the exact same wand you purchased when you were eleven if you were an auror"
"Are you alright there?" She paused, noticing him becoming emotional. "I remember when my first wand snapped, attempting a double disarm from a crouching position. Still difficult enough to do now..."
"I don’t know." She grinned, the sweet-smelling stalls and chattered excitement and buzz infectious. Still, she had loved these festivals before all the food stalls and hubbub. "I quite like it. No, I love it, actually. It’s a nice break from work — not that I, of course, don’t love working at the Ministry as well." She floundered for a short second, but quickly regained her composure. "It’s just a little exhausting at times."
"I see that, everyone needs time out of the office I suppose." Beau pulled her cloak closer around her, keeping an eye on the members of the crowd with a constant smile. "And any chance to get a free pumpkin pasty is fine by me."
"And with this..." Beau waved her wand, smiling, "I declare the 345th Hogsmeade festival open for visitors!"
She headed down from the stage, back to where most of the ministry members stood. "The things we do for publicity..."
Freya felt embarrassed that she didn’t know the Minister’s age. She wondered if that was even something she should be embarrassed about. Certainly she wasn’t the only person who didn’t know. This whole exchange just left her feeling flustered. She couldn’t feel comfortable not matter how hard she tried. Instead she kept trying to distract herself. First it was the order form, then the tea, but now it was just Freya and the Minister. “Well I’ve only been in charge here for a few years. Miss Puddifoot retired and gave the shop to me, so I’ve been running it ever since.”
"You seem to be doing pretty well, most of my colleagues had a serious addiction to your tea. It may be the only thing that gets us through many a meeting these days." Beau sighed, taking another sip. "It's definitely this one, do you take large repeat orders?"
Podric pushed himself up from the chair in which he was sat in and walked over to the floor to ceiling window which looked down onto the Atrium. He was a bit of a people watcher, and so watching the many witches and wizards walking through the dull lighted atrium was something of a pleasure to him. Turning around, he took the flask back from her and returned it back into his breast pocket.
"Well that isn’t my decision to make, it is of course the wand’s. Well the closest thing we come to at Olivander’s is Dragon’s heartstring, which I’m sure isn’t the same to what your previous wand maker created, but of course I could be wrong."
"True, the wand chooses the wizard." She remembered the first time she had heard those words, in the Rue De Chame in Paris. She was so young, her father had taken her for the first time. She could even remember the smell of fresh dirigible tarts in the bakery windows, the Beauxbaton robes she was so excited to try on. "I've had a few wands over the years, this is only one of many. Auror work has heavy demands after all."
Mackenzie looked up from her paperwork, slightly startled to be personally addressed by the Minister of Magic herself. She knew that Asher personally knew the woman, but she had only ever managed to lay eyes on her in the pictures in the Prophet until now. Frankly they didn’t do the woman justice. She was pretty yes, but more so it was how she held herself in such a manner that immediately had Mackenzie sitting straighter in her seat. A thousand lectures from her father about manners and good first impressions ran through her head. She was no Asher or Dahlia, what if she said something to completely embarrass herself and the family?
"Yes, ma’am. It can be trying at times, but as you said there are far less competent people to be working for. This is one of the most organized departments I’ve been in so far. Which I am thankful for, because I can only imagine how much more stressful this kind of work would be if it wasn’t."
She could tell from appearances they were similar, the Asher siblings. Beau smiled, taking a seat in a spare chair opposite Mackenzie's desk. "I remember my internship, I think they always are. I spent a long time translating things, it seemed like they preferred to use me instead of the paid translator for a long while." She pushed a loose hair off her face, adding, "Rosalind is impressed with your progress here, we were looking to have you accompany us on a diplomatic venture. To Iceland."
Oh of course it is. Some say that it is the hardest, but of course those are lies. What people do not understand is that while smoking is of course addictive, other substances are much more so. I mean Merlin, many more people die from drug use than they do of smoking.
Oh of course, and if not, I can always rack my brain and find some way to bore them with facts about wand making.
