Something I don't see being brought up on tumblr about the PWHL's rapid expansion:

One reason they're probably adding so many teams this year is because of the amount of skilled professional level players graduating for college/entering the draft this year.

If we do get 4 new expansion teams (my crack theory is they're still going to announce that cali team), that's roughly 80-100 new open slots for players, which is a lot, but consider there's 235 players in the draft. 23 Olympians - almost enough to make up a full team.

If you don't draft players graduating college, then you run the risk of them getting other careers/pursuing further education and never joining the PWHL. This has been repeatedly described as the deepest/most talented draft class so far, and honestly it seems like for the next few years, and losing this players might make later expansion much more difficult.

Plus, we've repeatedly seen that the market for pwhl is much bigger than the league anticipated - I don't think there has been a year without merch being sold out/unavailable. It might be risky, but I think it's pretty cool that the league believes in women's hockey like this!!
