The sun was shining over Awa'atlu, waves gently lapping against the shore. The weaved floor bouncing as the Metkayina bustled around the village, completing their daily duties.
It has only been a couple of weeks since the Sully family sought ututru among the Metkayina. The tension is heavy in the air, as the Sully family tries to adapt to their ways.
Outside of the tension between the two clans, there is an even bigger string of tension among the Sully family. The move has been hard on all the members, but it especially put strain between the mated pair.
Jake and Neytiri tried to keep it between them; to solve their problems without involving the children. Ultimately, the children could tell something was wrong with their parents.
Jake was at a loss. He did not know how to solve..no..survive this situation. His family is being hunted. His children are struggling to adapt to the foreign environment. His mate currently hates his guts, and practically aims her hatred of humans at her children..even if she does not know she is doing it. All Jake can do is adapt, to move forward, to someone survive this as a family.
Tsireya, along with her brother Aonung, were put in charge of training the sully kids; to teach them the ways of the Metkayina. Their friend Rotxo, also assisted them.
They were out training in the reefs near the village. Tsireya was teaching Kiri and Tuk about the animals that reside here; which ones to stay away from and which ones are safe to approach. Lo'ak reluctantly joined them, after some convincing from Tsireya.
He was swimming along the reef, close to the group when a flash of color caught his eye. He quickly turned his head in the direction of the object. He squinted his eyes, peering behind the rocks, all he could see was a flash of hair floating in the water. He panicked thinking that someone could have drowned, tapping Tsireya and pointing at the hair.
He swam to the rocks without waiting for an answer. Tsireya stayed behind with Kiri and Tuk, making sure the youngest couldn't see anything. Lo'ak reached the rocks, looking behind them. He expected to see a fellow Na'vi, but instead he was greeted by a sky person.
His eyes widened in fear, his body freezing. He wasn't sure what to do, after all what if they are from the RDA. How did a sky person even get here, without a mask at that. He turned to look at his sisters and Tsireya before making his mind.
He wrapped his arms around your waist and swam up to the surface, the others following behind him. His head emerged first, gasping for air, the others following suit. Tuk clung onto Tsireya as she took in the sight of you.
"Lo'ak what is this?" Tsireya asked, her voice shaking with fear as she holds onto Tuk protectively.
"I-I don't know...I thought I saw someone...I didn't think..I didn't think it would be one of the sky people.." he tried to explain it calmly, yet his mind was whirling with questions.
"She is injured" Kiri pointed out, looking at the cuts and scrapes along our face.
Lo'ak looked down at the women in his arms, unsure what to do. He pressed his ear against your chest, listening to a faint heartbeat. His eyes go wide, "she is alive! How is that possible? Sky people shouldn't be able to breathe the air." He looked at Kiri for some possible answers, yet Kiri herself is at a loss.
"We have to get her to dad. He is the only one who will know what to do." Kiri stated firmly, already swimming back.
"What?" Tsireya quickly intervened. "We cannot take her back to the village! She could be a distraction to lead the Sky people there!"
"What other choice do we have? She could also have valuable information. Dad will know how to handle this." Lo'ak started to swim behind Kiri, holding onto you tightly. Tsireya reluctantly followed behind, pulling Tuk with her.
They swam to the village edge, Lo'ak immediately laying you down on the sand. Kiri went on ahead to find her father. Many of the Metkayina villagers paused at the scene in fear of seeing a sky person. They surrounded the area, forming a circle, pointing and whispering.
Tonowari, the village Olo'eyktan, was the first to arrive at the scene after hearing the news. "What is the meaning of this Sully boy?" He demanded looking at Lo'ak with a calculating gaze. If he was angry he did not show it.
"I-we found her while swimming in the reef...she..she is alive and breathing.."Lo'ak explained it quickly. "It is not possible for sky people to breathe our air yet she does. And she is injured..sir." He looked up at Tonowari, shifting his body protectively over you.
He wasn't sure why he was protecting you. Maybe it's because he grew up around Spider and the scientists in the lab. That not all sky people are bad. Maybe it's because of the fact that you can breathe Pandora air, or that you are injured. Whatever it was, he was waiting for his father's verdict.
Jake pushed the crowd out of the way as he moved to the front. Kiri, Neytiri, and Ronal follow behind him. The moment he reached the front, his eyes flickered from Lo'ak to you on the ground, then back to Tonowari. His ears folded over, unsure of what to make of this situation.
He was in his marui with Neytiri, having another heated conversation when Kiri busted in explaining everything to him. He slowly walked over to where you lay, kneeling down on one knee, his fingers going to your neck to check for a pulse. There it was, a faint pulse.
He took a sharp inhale looking back up to Tonowari. "She is indeed alive, it's a faint pulse..but it is there." He explained to Tonowari, knowing the man would want his confirmation.
"You know the sky people better than us Jakesully. I greatly appreciate your achievements as Tourk Makto. That is why I granted your family uturu. However I cannot let a sky person reside in my village, I cannot bring harm to my people." He explained it calmly to Jake.
Jake looked back at you, taking in your outfit. It did not look like anything from the RDA, and nothing like the outfits back at hellsgate. They look too colorful, too different. If you weren't from the RDA he had to find out how you got here. He picked you up in his arms, walking over to Tonowari, ignoring the cold glare his mate was sending to the human in his arms.
"I know it is a lot to ask of you. I do not want to cause any trouble." He took a pause to gather his thoughts, "but..I ask of you to let her stay, to let her get treated. If she was from the RDA they would have never let her out of their sight. The fact that she breathes our air is a miracle. They would have kept her in the lab, running experiments trying to replicate it for the other sky people." Jake pleaded with Tonowari, he didn't know why but she could be valuable.
"How can you be so sure? They could have sent her themselves to gather intel," he looked into Jake's eyes trying to figure out what his plan was.
"I will interrogate her, find out the truth. And if she is from the RDA I'll extract information from her. If she turns out to be a threat...I'll kill her myself." Jake stood firmly, full of conviction.
Tonowari turned to Ronal, pleading to her with his eyes. JakeSully had a point, she could have information that could benefit them. Ronal closed her eyes and nodded once. "You will not leave her alone, someone has to be with her all the time," he gave JakeSully his permission with that one condition.
"I promise, I won't let her out of my sight..." he hesitated, his eyes flickering between Tonowari and Ronal. "If the Tsahik can be kind enough to tend to her injuries.." Jake knew this was a long shot, Ronal was the best healer but she also hated the sky people. Not that he could blame her.
Ronal's tail flickered behind her, irritated, her ears folding flat against her head. The last thing she wanted to do was treat a tawtute, yet if they wanted information they needed her alive. She huffed her breath, "I will treat the girl."
Jake carried you to their shared family marui pod, his mate and children trailing behind him. He laid her down on the floor, Ronal coming in after a short while caring her supplies. While Ronal was treating you, Neytiri pulled Jake to the side.
"What are you thinking!! Bringing a tawtute to our home!" she hissed, her ears pinned back in frustration.
"I had no choice, what was I supposed to do. She could be valuable," his ears pinned down, as he tried to explain it calmly.
"You had a choice, you chose to bring her here!" she was glaring at him.
"Neytiri..let's not do this right now..not in front of the kids.." he looks over at them. Thankfully they are surrounding Ronal, watching her treat you.
"She is a human! She does not belong here!" her voice trembled in rage.
"So am I!" Jake finally snapped, raising his voice and drawing attention to them. The kids head snapped to their direction, Tuk hiding behind Kiri. "So are our kids! We are part human okay, I get it you hate humans for what they did, but you can't let that affect us."
Neteyam and Lo'ak looked between their parents in worry, they know things aren't the best between them but they didn't think it was this bad. Ronal was ignoring the private conversation, only focusing on healing you.
"I hate them, Jake! I hate them! I hate them... I hate their pink little hands! I hate the insanity in their mind!" She completely forget about the audience in the room.
"Every time one of our children made a mistake, or do something different. You automatically blame it on them being part human. Tell me Neytiri do you hate that they are part human! Do you hate that I was once a human!" Jake was waiting for her answer, he desperately hoped that maybe deep down there was a way to fix this.
Neytiri was taken aback, her tail stopped moving, falling still to the ground. Lo'ak held his breath, sharing a glance with Neteyam. Tuk was silently crying holding onto Kiri, hating to see her parents fight. Even Ronal stopped her movement for a second, waiting to hear the answer. She hesitated, "....yes..."
Jake closed his eyes, he really hoped she said a different answer. He made up his mind slowly opening his eyes, "I can't do this Neytiri, I can't be with someone who hates a part of me, of our children. We are done." His firm, final. The kids stood in shock, first they learned their mother hated a part of them, now their parents are splitting up. "We will learn to coparent, I just can't be with you anymore."
She choked back tears, "that is not possible, we are mated before Eywa Jake! We are mated for life, we cannot separate!" her voice trembled with fear and hurt.
"I'll find a way, hell even if I have to ask Eywa myself." He turned around and walked back to the spot where they all were. He picked up Tuk, rubbing her back, whispering in her ear to calm her down. He looked down at Ronal who finished treating you.
"I have treated all her injuries, she is currently sleeping. I do not know when she will wake up," she looked between Jake and Neytiri. "As Tsahik..I will go ask Eywa for guidance..if she will..allow you two to unmate.." with that, she took her basket of supplies and left the Sully marui.
The marui was quiet, Neytiri stumbling into a corner to process what transpired. Neteyam was stunned, looking at the distance between his parents. Lo'ak and Kiri were more hurt. They look the most human so hearing their mother say that she hated their human part made them feel worthless in a way.
Jake put down Tuk to sleep for the night next to Kiri. He gestured to his sons to go to bed as well. He sat down next to you, keeping an eye out for the night. To think the appearance of human would be the last straw in his marriage. For an odd reason Jake felt...comfortable around your presence. He found you familiar, yet he doesn't know why. Thinking back to his human self on earth..he has never seen you before. He had more questions than answers.
Morning rolled around slower than usual. Jake swears time was moving slower. He stayed up all night, his mind reeling from the events. You didn't show any signs of waking up. He didn't know if he had any patience left to wait for answers.
The kids slowly woke up as the sun shined on their faces. Rolling up their hammocks as they get ready for the day. No one said anything, the tension still high. Jake prepared breakfast, bringing some berries he foraged. The kids sat closer to Jake than Neytiri, her face morphing to pain before masking her expression.
Neteyam threw his mother a sympathetic glance. He understood her hatred for humans, in fact they all did, that didn't make it any less hurtful to hear. They just needed some time to all heal.
After breakfast, Neteyam and Lo'ak were tasked with staying in the mauri, to keep an eye on you. Kiri and Tuk went to meet Tsireya for their daily lessons. As for Jake and Neytiri, they were called to the Cove of the Ancestors by Ronal.
When they got there, they saw Tonowari and Ronal waiting for them. Ronal explained how Eywa answered her prayers, giving them permission to unmate. It is unheard of for Na'vi to divorce, as they mate for life. This would be the one and only exception. Ronal explained that they would have to dive and connect their Kurus to the spirit tree.
Jake dived first, bringing his braid over his shoulder and connecting it to the tree without hesitation. Neytiri on the other hand was heartbroken, she did not want things to end like this but she had no choice left, this was for the better.
The moment she connected her kuru to the tree, they could see a line connecting them. In a matter of seconds that line was severed, breaking their mating bond. They both gasped, pulling their kuru's away from the tree.
It was done. They are now an unmated pair. It felt different, they shared many memories and hardships, only for it to end like this. They swam up to the surface, facing Ronal and Tonowari.
"It is done." Jake stated firmly, his voice void of emotion.
Tonowari nodded solemnly to Jake. While Ronal consoled Neytiri. Yes the two women shared their differences, however this situation was unique and heartbreaking.
"Dad! She is awake!" Jake quickly turned his head when he heard Neteyam's voice. Neteyam was on his Ilu swimming fast to them. He shared a look with Tonowari and they quickly headed back.
You felt a dull pain through your entire body. You could have sworn you had died after you got hit by that car. You open your eyes groggy, slowly your eyesight focusing.
You expected to be in a hospital, instead you are treated by a woven ceiling. You try and sit up slowly, hissing as you feel a sharp pain in your chest, probably a broken rib.
You finally look turn your head to look around and freeze. Your eyes widen in surprise as you see two tall blue cat like aliens looking at you. You forget all the pain that is in your body and spring up on your legs, backing up to a corner. "Who are you! What are you! Please don't eat me!" your brain was scrambled as you try to make sense of this situation.
One of the blue aliens put his hands up infant of him, like he was trying to calm down an animal. "We mean no harm...I am Neteyam..and that," he pointed to Lo'ak, "is my little brother Lo'ak." His voice was calm and soothing, trying to not make you panic even more.
"um..wh-what are you?" you pick up the closest thing to you, a wooden pole, and hold it infront of you for protection.
The two brothers shared a confused looked, you should know what they are. All RDA members know who they are...so why did you look so confused. Lo'ak spoke up this time, "We..we are Na'vi..I found you." While they grew up around Norm, Spider, and Max, their English wasn't the best. They knew enough to communicate basically.
"Na'vi..?" They didn't look they wanted to harm you, but you couldn't be sure.
The older one, Neteyam you remembered turned to his brother. "I will go get father, you stay and look after her." He quickly ran out of the marui to go get his father.
You stared at Lo'ak and he stared at you. It was quite awkward between you. "My father knows better, my brother went to get him." He reassured you as he sat down, eyes raking over your body as he tried to figure you out. "You are injured, sit"
Going against your better judgment, you slowly sat down. Your back facing the corner, pole in hand for protection. Your body was aching but you chose to ignore it. You studied the boy before you, before looking around taking in the scene. You could feel the waves below you, rocking the floor a little. The hut was pretty spacious, made of wood and ropes. You had no idea how it was made, but it was cozy. A calming sensation filled you as you rocked slightly with the waves.
After an awkward ten minutes, you see the other boy from earlier run in with a couple of extra people. You gripped the pole tighter as you took them in. They were much much taller than the two boys, their faces were unreadable. The guy in front looked at you with a stern face. They were way scarier than the two boys.
The guy kneeled infant of you, putting his hands up like the two boys did. "I am not going to hurt you." His voice was firm, his face not wavering.
"Yeah I don't trust that.." you mumble holding the pole closer.
Jake's eyes flickered between you and the pole. "Are you RDA?"
You looked at him confused..."RDA? What is that? Also who are you?"
Jake's gaze pierced through you, as if he was trying yo read your mind. You squirmed uncomfortably under his gaze. "My name is Jake." he avoided mentioning what the RDA were. Jake was great at reading people, being in the marines then hellsgate taught him that. You weren't lying, he could tell that much. You looked scared and confused, like you were seeing everything for the first time.
"Behind me is Tonowari, Ronal, and Neytiri. You already met my two boys." He pointed to the others behind him with his chin. The other adults didn't bother to hide their distain. Except for Tonowari, his was stern yet curious. "How did you get here? Lo'ak found you drowning in the ocean." Jake asked cautiously.
You hesitated, for some reason you trusted him. He had that whole don't mess with me look, but he seemed like a fair person. Or maybe it was because his name was also Jake. "I..I was walking along the waterfront back home..when I got hit by a car and thrown into the ocean. I could barely move and um..thought I was dead." you explained slowly, your grip slowly loosening on the pole.
"Home? You mean earth..?" he asked confused, how could someone just randomly show up from earth.
"Yes earth...I mean where else?" You looked at the dude confused. I mean to be fair he was a blue alien.
"You are on Pandora..which is years away from earth." He explained.
"What? No how is that possible I was on Earth, and what even is pandora?" You panicked now realizing you are on an alien planet far away from home.
After some back and forth Jake managed to explain some of the basics, and asked some questions. You think it's his way of trying to see if you are an enemy. He stood up and walked to the group, explaining everything to them. You listened to them speak in a different language. Lo'ak and Neteyam came closer to you curiously, with Lo'ak poking parts of your body.
Jake came back and kneeled infant of you. "I will be teaching you our ways, and my children will help as well. You should get some rest, we will start your lessons tomorrow." His tone left no room for arguments.
Jake led you back to your makeshift bed and allowed you to sleep while they all left. They did their duties for the day, the kids training, while the warriors went hunting. During lunch Jake woke you up to eat, handing you a plate then immediately telling you to sleep after finishing. That was his way of making sure you heal from your injuries.
Slowly day bled into night and the Sully's returned to their marui. Jake sat down next to you, waking you up for dinner, while his kids sat around you. Neytiri sat far away by herself, sending you a glare every couple of minutes.
You were introduced to two of his other kids, Kiri and Tuk. Tuk was very curious, throwing you a barrage of questions. Jake, Neteyam, Lo'ak, and Kiri took turns translating between you all.
You learned that Neteyam was the oldest and Tuk was the youngest. Neteyam was apparently a warrior, and his brother Lo'ak was training to be one. Kiri and Tuk talked about the ocean to you. You learned that Tuk loved to weave, making many different things like bracelets.
Slowly they all trickled to their hammocks, the days events catching up to them as they fall asleep. Jake slept close to you, making sure you don't do anything throughout the night.
You laid in your bed looking up, lost in thought. To everyone here you looked like you were handling things easily. The truth couldn't be farther than that. You were terrified, you missed your family, and most importantly you missed Jake. You couldn't panic, that would only make things worse. You had no choice but to adapt.
Tomorrow was a new day, and it was the day you started your lessons. You slowly drifted off to sleep, your thoughts filled with memories of your home and worries about your future.
