The bioluminescence of the forest whipped by you in streaks of light as the drum of paâli hooves beating against the ground filled the air. The steady sound resonated through your bones with each gallop and the cool of the night rushed over your skin like water. The smell of early spring filled your senses as the strength and sureness of the creature beneath you overtook your own testy emotions.Â
Stroking the neck of your Paâli, you urged him to quickly follow the group of hunters that had set out at Neytiriâs scout report. Night had fallen, but she had run back to alert her father and the other warriors that a uniltĂŹranyu (dreamwalker) was in the forest and that Eywa had stopped her from taking action against him. A murmur had passed through the crowds of people gathering for the evening meal as Neytiriâs betrothed spoke loudly of his wish to leave the demon in the forest to die.Â
However, at the behest of the Tsahik, he was forced to lead the charge of hunters to capture the human. He rode out just ahead of Tsuâtey, whom you respected greatly. Lekâann by contrast, was an insulting sight you wished never to be subjected to ever again. You usually did your best to avoid him, but your eyes lingered on the back of his head as you followed. You scoffed at the sight of the colored beads you had given him adorning his braided hair. The nerve of the tutan txe'lanluke (heartless man). Â Â
The beads and the many other gifts you had exchanged with him had been a constant reminder of your foolishness. In your despair, you had fled into the forest one night and burned them all, watching as months of promises turned to ash. Though it was you who had broken the courtship, the sting of his betrayal was still fresh. You had been so naive. Only Eywa knew why such a thing could pass and only Eywa could bring you through. You knew that she would, and so you shook off the wave of self-pity lest you fall behind, hoping your unease would not affect your sturdy direhorse.
Jakesully was not hard to miss. You saw him for the first time that night, waving a fiery branch at the many nantang that slunk in the shadows. With the press of your heel and your internal command, you rode directly toward a viperwolf as it crouched in preparation to pounce, ready to strike the human from behind.Â
Your mountâs imposing body cut through the predatorâs path and it shirked away. Jake whipped around and his eyes searched frantically in the dark until they landed on you just as the hunters surrounded him. âOh shit,â he said, slowly holding up his five-fingered hands and the remaining nantang fled the scene. Â
âVelek (surrender), uniltĂŹranyu!â Lekâann spoke and threatened Jake in his puffed up way that you once found handsome. A pointless display of dominance over a man who did not understand a single word spoken. His voice became noise as your eyes fixed on the victim, who began laughing in disbelief. His clothes were ripped and hair untamed but his eyes were sharp and attentive. There were no traces of fear in them.Â
âDamnit,â Jake muttered to himself as Tsuâtey bound his hands and pushed him along. You rode beside him as others raced ahead. âShit. Grace, youâre never gonna believe this.â
Jake was walked into Hometree like a beast led to slaughter. Eytukan awaited his arrival, standing fiercely on the dais at the foot of the spiral and Moâat came down with bold steps just behind him. You couldnât help but feel a twinge of compassion for Jake as he stood as a spectacle among the people.Â
After her inspection of him, Mo'atâs voice rang out, saying, âWho among the warriors would teach him the Naâvi way?â
The crowd bristled. With no response, Moâat posed the question again. You looked around and saw a range of hesitance and opposition in the faces of your brothers and sisters. It was the almost purple hue of Lekâannâs face as it contorted in rage that spurred you to volunteer.Â
âI will,â you said, stepping forward and raising your bow, heart loud in your ears. You fixed your eyes on Moâat, whose gaze flicked between you and Jake as she considered the pairing.
âIt has been decided,â the Tsahik nodded and turned to Jake. âLearn well, Jakesully, then we will see if your insanity can be cured.âÂ
âKehe!â Lekâann shouted, the muscles around his neck pulling tautly. âTsahik! You should not trust her with a dreamwalker.âÂ
Your heart sank as he looked at you with incredulity and disgust. You feared he would approach you, but he quickly trailed after Moâat and Eytukan, speaking with them urgently. Your grip on the arc of your bow loosened. You hated the feeling that weighed in your chest, it twisted your heart and made it hard. The opposite of love was not hate, and you prayed to Eywa that one day you would feel nothing for Lekâann. That you would find respite, and be free, oh, great Mother, please.Â
âHey, uh, thank you,â Jakeâs voice came suddenly from your side, almost making you jump. You looked up quickly to see that his head was tilted as he regarded you. He smiled and lifted a hand toward you in a strange gesture. âItâs nice to meet you. Iâm Jake.âÂ
âY/n,â you nodded, eyeing his palm. When nothing happened, Jake clasped his hands together rather awkwardly. In the meantime you had begun to inspect his tattered clothes again and you made up your mind. âPlease, follow me.â
You offered him a polite smile before you started up the spiral, leading Jake to the next level of Hometree. Just below, Lekâann pleaded loudly with Moâat. His grating voice traveling upwards after you:Â
âTsahik, if I may speak, we must deal with the demon swiftly. He is a danger to us all. You must cast him out. He is a mockery to the Naâvi wayâŠâÂ
âWhatâs that guyâs problem?â Jake muttered, his shoulder bumping into yours as he leaned down.
âDo not mind him. Much of his words hold no real substance,â you advised, shaking your head and moving so your shoulders could not touch again. âFwĂ€kĂŹ ke fwefwi (Mantis doesnât whistle).âÂ
Lekâannâs voice grew smaller as you walked, but you still heard, âYou know what they are capable of. Think of your daughter⊠Have we not suffered enough? Y/n is weak in spirit, extremely impressionable, she cannotâŠâ
Speaking loudly to overpower Lekâann in your own ears, you explained as the hollow in your chest deepened, âDo not expect someone to do something that is not in their inherent nature.âÂ
Jake nodded, but he looked displeased. âHe just said your name,â he noted, âI might not know what heâs saying but I sure can make out an insult.â
âHe is insulting us both. Do not worry about me,â you requested, trying to focus on the man in front of you and not the one below. âWorry about you.âÂ
Seeing Jakeâs mouth open you quickly continued before he could protest, âCome, you must change out of your human clothes, Jakesully.âÂ
He held concern in his eyes, you did not know why. His mouth twisted down before a thought passed and the corners lifted up again. âYou can just call me Jake.âÂ
âYou have much to learn, Jake,â you attempted, mimicking his foreign inflection. âWe must prove Lekâann wrong.âÂ
âOorah.â Whatever that sound had meant, Jake looked determined. Â
The rest of the night passed in a blur, especially as you considered the reality of your decision. Eywa had placed the fate of this skyperson, the enemy, in your hands. The events of the day and the words spoken about you replayed in your mind as Jake settled in the hammock beside yours. You hoped he could not hear you cry.Â
â
Spring had warmed Pandora and arrays of new growth were scattered across the forest in bursts of color. The distraction Jakeâs training provided and the changing of the seasons were good for your soul. He learned quickly when he was not distracted, but even then, you could not be mad. The look of wonder on his face always made you smile.Â
Today, like the many days before, Jake stood before you. His hair was braided away from his face in a way that suited his sharp, square features. You thought he looked quite Naâvi, though the hair on his furrowed brow gave him away.Â
You pressed a hand against Jakeâs abdomen, hoping to remind him to engage the muscles there as he drew his bow. Instead, he stiffened and his breath stuttered along with the movement.Â
âTry again,â you encouraged softly, tapping against his core. âUse your breath. Speed will come, focus on the motion.âÂ
âGot it,â Jake said, a little breathlessly. Stepping back, you watched as he lifted his arms and pulled back on the bowstring. It pleased you to see your fatherâs bow in use again so many years after his passing. You were admiring it fondly when your ears perked toward sounds of movement behind you.Â
You pretended not to notice, but you knew it was Lekâann who prowled like a territorial animal. You had inadvertently invited his attention and invoked his wrath by taking on Jake as your pupil. He had been keeping an eye on you both, always hovering just nearby, like he had nothing better to do. Unless he decided to be intrusive, he was easy to ignore by keeping your gaze fixed on Jake. You did just that and prayed he would not disturb you today, but knew it was too late when Jakeâs arms dropped and his ears pressed back. Jake drew himself up to his full height and you followed his gaze over your shoulder. Â
âGive up, dreamwalker,â Lekâann spit in his usual unpleasant manner, though his English words were choppy. He stalked closer as you turned fully, crossing your arms. âIt is no use. Even small beasts of the forest will show no mercy to an unskilled warrior such as you. Return to your people.âÂ
âSo you do speak English,â Jake observed flatly. Â
Lekâann glared at him and switched to Naâvi to address you. âThere is no point, y/n. What are you doing this for? He does not belong here, you know it is true. You are smarter than this.â
Your brow rose in disbelief. âDo notââ
âTsuâtey, Peyral, and many others agree with me,â he interrupted, gesturing to his chest with his hands. Â
âAnd Neytiri? What does your betrothed think?â you bit back, your words dripping with venom.Â
His jaw tightened and he looked away just briefly. âIt does not matter what she thinks.âÂ
âYes, it does,â you objected, lifting a hand to the sky. âEywa gave her a sign, revealing her favor. It is your efforts to change her will that are in vain. Tsahik was very clear.â Â
âThen Eywa must be mistaken.âÂ
You gasped, âLekâann!âÂ
Lekâann stepped closer and his hand came to rest on your upper arm. His touch was warm and familiar and your resolve began to crumble. His voice softened, âYayotsyĂŹp, pleaseââ
The sound of that name from his lips made you recoil. You remembered all the ways he had spoken it before. Often with laughter, with reverence, with sincerity and with what you were so sure was love. Your flesh might rot where his hand rested, but it was the term of endearment that made your blood boil.Â
Jakeâs hiss came from beside you as he stepped forward with his teeth bared. It was a frightful sound that snapped you out of your preoccupation as Lekâann flinched backward, his hand withdrawing with him. Lekâannâs eyes were full of surprise and indignation, but he quickly retaliated with a hiss of his own.
The men glared at each other, hackles raised, as you tried to gather yourself, blinking hard. The emotion that knotted your stomach rose in your chest and threatened to choke you.Â
âLeave us, Lekâann,â you demanded, more strongly than you felt.
âButââ
âGo!â you shrieked, throwing your body forward.
Lekâann did not budge and Jake repeated your command in Naâvi, âKĂ€!âÂ
A sour mix of disbelief and defeat painted Lekâannâs face as he regarded you both for a moment before retreating. Jakeâs shoulders were tense until Lekâann disappeared into the trees.Â
âYeah, thatâs right,â Jake muttered, swinging back around to you.Â
You deflated as all the strength in your body vanished, swaying on your feet. Your limbs were as heavy as boulders and you did not know whether to scream, or cry, or even laugh.Â
âWhat would happen if I punched him?â Jake asked, squeezing his hand into a fist.  Â
You took a deep breath. âBig trouble.â
âWho does he think he is?â Jake scoffed, glancing in the direction of Lekâannâs departure.Â
âHe is next in line to be clan leader,â you explained numbly, moving to pick up the bow Jake had set down.Â
Jake eyed you thoughtfully, âThereâs somethinâ else.âÂ
âI do not know what you speak of,â you tried to dismiss.  Â
He leveled a knowing look at you. âI wasnât born yesterday. Yah-yow-tsip? What does that mean?âÂ
You winced and sighed, looking to the sky where the trees swayed in the breeze. âLittle bird,â it pained you to confess. âYou are right. He was once very dear to me.â
âWhat happened?â he asked, carefully moving closer to you.
You avoided his intent gaze and you traced the ridges and lines of the bowâs carved wood with your finger. Growing up you had stared at it where it hung in your familyâs kelku, often wishing for your fatherâs strength, protection and wisdom in times of need. Would Lekâann have respected your father enough to respect you? Could you have been spared heartbreak and humiliation? You would never know and nothing good came from imagining otherwise.Â
âHe pursued me,â you began, smiling wryly. âCourted me for many rotations. I was certain we wouldâŠâ You paused, the word too intimate to say, and swallowed before you continued, âAll the while, he had been promised to another woman.âÂ
Jake inhaled sharply through his nose and when you looked up, you could tell he was working very hard to control his expression. His jaw moved, clenching tightly to hide a grimace.Â
âHe knew this while I did not. We could not continue once I discovered the truthâŠThat is what happened,â you concluded, trying to sound unaffected. You had never recounted the story aloud, not even to your closest friend, and your ears burned in shame.Â
âThatâs what happened,â Jake repeated quietly to himself in disbelief, hands closing and opening repeatedly. âWhat a piece of work.âÂ
He looked away and took a breath before nodding back toward you. âWeâve got a lot of words in English to describe a guy like that,â he shook his head, scowling, but he spoke softly when he added, âThanks for tellinâ me.â
You nodded, pursing your lips. âIt is maybe good that you know. Lekâann does not give up so easily. He will be back.â
âStill a no on the punching? Iâd be happy to,â Jake offered, and you couldnât tell if he was joking. You didnât think he was.Â
âStill no, despite your honorable intentions.â You straightened, took another deep breath and held the bow out to him. âShall we resume?â
âAre you up for it?â Jake countered as he took the weapon. He held your gaze until you shook your head and deflated again.Â
âNo, I am sorry,â you sighed.Â
âI think a walkâll do us some good,â Jake suggested.Â
You nodded. A walk sounded nice, but you really wanted to ride. Or fly. It was a beautiful day to fly. It would help clear your head, and you would not be neglecting Jakeâs training if you took him with you.
âThis way, Jake,â you declared, gesturing with the tilt of your head. âThere is someone I want you to meet.âÂ
You began your trek back to Hometree, reinvigorated by the thought of your ikran and introducing her to your pupil. Jake kept in step with you even though you knew his stride was greater than yours. His presence was comforting, the sound of each of his steps reminding you that you werenât alone. You were glad Jake was with you to face Lekâann, even if he was the reason for the unwanted attention. It felt good to have someone stand up for you, to be strong when you couldnât.Â
You took in the sight of his side profile for a moment before saying, âIt was very good, by the way. Very natural.âÂ
âWhat was?â Jake turned to you with his head cocked to the side.Â
You looked up at him and hissed playfully.Â
His brow lifted with a laugh. âDid you see the way he jumped?âÂ
âYes.â You smiled. âI did.â
â
The breeze was a welcome relief from the humidity that clung to your skin, it would rain soon but not quite yet. From so high up, the view of your beloved forest extended endlessly in each direction. You could almost make out the Ayram alusĂŹng (floating mountains) which had made that particular tree your favorite spot when you found it all those years ago.Â
There were still trees that towered over the one you were perched on and you smiled, admiring Hometree from afar and thanking Eywa for such a beautiful and strong dwelling. Finally peering down, you watched as Jake attempted to climb up the tree after you and laughed as he struggled, expressing his frustrations in grunts of effort and his new favorite word âwiyaâ. Your fatherâs bow was slung across his chest as he used his arms to pull himself up each branch.Â
âHe is slow,â a voice came from beside you. âHe makes many missteps.âÂ
Your head snapped up toward the sound. âLekâann,â you sighed deeply, finding him leaning in the shadows against the trunk of the tree. The sight of Lekâannâs face and the sound of his voice was an assault to your senses, now more irritating than heartbreaking. You should have known he would find you here. You had brought him in the early, rose-colored days of your courtship when you were excited to share parts of your life with him. The unwanted memory of how he had held you in his arms, just where he stood now, accentuated the emotional distance that lingered in the physical space that stretched between you.Â
You knew he had waited until the rare moment you were alone to strike and you were growing tired of his persistence. Lekâann was a ghost of your past you couldnât seem to shake, who continued to torment you. Â
âThis has lasted long enough,YayotsyĂŹp,â Lekâann said, speaking gently like he used to, but his tricks would not fool you anymore. âPutting the clan at risk to enact your revenge on me is rash and irresponsible.â He stopped in front of you and lifted his hand, brushing the back of his fingers against your cheek. âYou have proven your point to me. End this foolish venture.âÂ
You tore your head away from his touch. âI am not seeking revenge,â you insisted, off-put by his feigned tenderness. âThis is no longer about what transpired between us.âÂ
You would never be the girl that fell for his manipulation again. The bitterness and resentment you carried for Lekâann had begun eating you alive. But Eywa provided, unexpectedly and in her own timing. It was easy to forget all your troubles when you were with Jake. Your obligation to him melted into delight in his company. He forced you to be present and see the forest through his eyes, pulling you up out of the dark valley of your past. You felt your shell of shame and sorrow melting away as you ran with Jake through the forest, laughed over his discovery of Naâvi delicacies, and guided his hands that held knife and bow.Â
In your newfound reality, you saw a glimpse of what life could be without the pain of Lekâannâs betrayal like a yoke upon your neck. Experiencing such a change made you realize how much power he had over you, power that he did not deserve. You knew there was only one way to rid him of it forever. Releasing Lekâann from your unforgiveness would be to release yourself from his hold, even if he still lingered like a bad taste in your mouth.Â
A wave of courage filled you now, even as his eyes narrowed and he took another step toward you. âI know you volunteered to spite me,â he accused.Â
âYou are right,â you admitted, ignoring the cocky glint in his eye. His accusation was somewhat true, at least in the moment you answered Moâatâs call many weeks ago. Yet, you were beginning to see Eywaâs hand upon it all. âI did it because you think I am weak and have wronged me greatly, but Eywa has given me the strength to forgive you. I wish for all bitterness, malice, anger and slander to be put away from us.â
Lekâannâs expression soured and he scoffed, pointing a finger at you. âYou have wronged me, y/n,â he bit out. âRemeber, you chose to break our courtship. You endanger our people with your naivete. You have caused enough trouble, it is clear you need me to fix your mistakes.âÂ
âYou know that is not true,â you defended, incredulity threatening to shatter your calm. âI do not need you. There is nothing to fix!â
Lekâann opened his mouth to speak but he quickly clenched his jaw shut and his brow lowered. He regarded you as if he had never seen you and his speechlessness made you pause.Â
âPlease, Lekâann,â you said, reigning in your exasperation. âIf you ever felt anything real for me, let us walk freely of each other, in peace. Do not seek me out. Do not interfere in my life any longer.Â
His shock morphed into anger and he inhaled sharply, but you did not cower.Â
âAnd leave Jake alone. Your prejudice only gives him reason to turn against us.â
âDo you hear yourself, YayotsyĂŹp?âÂ
âStop that. I am no longer your yayotsyĂŹp,â you ordered before your courage could run out and he sputtered. Waves of his fury seemed to roll off of him, boiling up from under his skin. âI will not argue with you anymore.â You offered a tight lipped smile that made his eye twitch before saying, âGoodbye.âÂ
He called after you as you hopped down to the branch below and swung to the next. Lekâann would surely bother you again, but your burst of courage gave you confidence. Lekâann may pose a threat to Jakeâs training, but he was no real threat to you, not anymore. Your smile grew wider as you lowered to the next branch, feeling like a weight had been lifted off your shoulders. Just at that moment, Jakeâs hands reached up and grasped the wood.Â
Crouching, you leaned over to meet his face with a grin.Â
âWoah,â he breathed in surprise, eyes wide. âHi.âÂ
âHi,â you replied, taking in the way his hair stuck to his wrinkled forehead. âI have changed my mind, we will climb another tree.â
âWhat?â Jake huffed, eyes widening and breathing hard. He let his arms drop. âWeâre going back down?âÂ
âYes,â you said as you looped your arms under the branch and flipped down, landing just beside him. You laughed as he deflated, shoulders slumping. Â
He caught his breath and bent over, his hands on his knees. âWhatâs got you smiling like that?âÂ
âIt is a beautiful day,â you answered, reaching out and tugging gently on one of his braids. His lips stretched into a smile and you regarded him fondly for a time before he straightened up. âLet us not waste it.âÂ
You began your descent, jumping down to the next branch and looked back to see Jake do the same. Though his footing was unsteady, he copied your movements perfectly. Â
âWait,â Jake said before you could continue and you paused. He looked up the tree before tilting his head to the side. âThought I heard you talking to someone up there. Everything okay?âÂ
You nodded. Everything was okay, and for the first time in a very long time, you believed it.Â
â
âY/n!â Jake practically shouted from across the room, waving and making his way through clusters of people settled around the communal area. The room buzzed with chatter and the body of Hometree diffused the sun as it poured in, beams of light illuminating the space in a dreamlike haze. The sunlight reflected off the droplets of water that still clung to the ends of his hair.Â
Ignoring the teasing smile on your friend Serunga'âs lips, you put down the leather in your hands and stood from your spot among the other weavers to wave back. Your hair was damp too, and flowed unstyled over your shoulders. A wash in the river had been much needed after Jake fell into mud earlier in the day. You might have avoided a similar fate if you had outrun him, but he was too quick and his arms crushed you into his mud-covered chest as you screeched in protest.Â
As you wondered what had taken Jake so long to return, two children ran into his path and he paused. Looking down, his mouth moved in response to something they had said. The little ones then held out their hands, displaying their digits, and Jake did the same. You heard their squeals of wonder as their tails swished in excitement. Jake laughed as they compared their fingers with his.Â
He regarded them so fondly as they darted off that a warmth spread in your chest. He shook his head and resumed his walk toward you, grinning when he found you were watching. At one point in time you might have looked away, but the feeling in your chest swelled under his gaze and a smile formed on your lips in return.
âMaâJake,â you greeted when he stopped in front of you, one hand hidden behind his back.
âI have something for you,â he said, skipping formalities in his excitement he took your hand between his and placed something in it.Â
Jake pulled away to reveal a river stone as big as your palm, made round and smooth with its constant movement. The sedimentary layers that striped the stone glittered and the colors almost danced in the sunlight. You wondered, as you rubbed the surface beneath your fingers, if all the tumbling tribulations you faced would make you polished one day too. You looked up at the man who had carried the river stone back to Hometree to give to you. He was pleased, you could tell by his smile.Â
You would have to find a special spot to place the stone among your belongings. The rack that held your things was becoming crowded with everything Jake had been giving you. Mostly small things, like strings of flowers or the vibrant feather he found while training the day before. However, sometimes his gifts surprised you. He had carved some beads for you out of a beautiful, rich wood and though they werenât uniform in shape, you treasured them. You knew they must have taken him much patience to complete. The bracelet you had made with them hung around your wrist even when you slept.Â
Yet, nothing was more surprising than hearing from the women you weaved with that Jake sometimes consulted their wisdom. Their knowing smiles as they giggled among themselves made your cheeks burn, though some did express their disapproval of the matter. You had firmly dismissed it all, but you could feel their watchful eyes on you now as you spoke with Jake and received another gift.Â
âWhat is this called in Naâvi?â you asked, holding up your stone. âIt is a difficult word for Skypeople.â
Jake scowled, his beautiful smile gone in an instant. âDoes everything have to be a lesson?â
âYes, because I am your teacher,â you squinted teasingly at him, but he was unamused. âWill you not try?â The look he gave you was so dry you gave in with a laugh. âTskxe.â
âDo you like the⊠ts-kay?â Jake asked, butchering the word in a way youâve never heard before.Â
The eager look on his face returned as he waited for your reply and you smiled widely. âYour priorities are out of order.â
âBut do you?â
âYes,â you finally answered, running your finger over its surface once more. âIt is beautiful. Thank you.âÂ
âYouâre welcome,â he replied, nodding and looking very satisfied. âWhat are you working on?â he asked, gesturing down at the ground where you had been sitting.Â
âNone of your business,â you answered quickly, trying to push your basket behind you with your foot. You had forgotten all about what you had been working on before his arrival, and you tried to hide your panic.   Â
You felt in your spirit that he was almost ready, that he would undertake the iknimaya and Uniltaron soon. Eywa had been so faithful and you wanted to make something to mark the achievement. Jake had no family nor a beloved one here to do so and he deserved something that was truly his that he could wear proudly. Leather strips and small stones you had chosen for an armband and matching necklace sat there for Jake to see if he looked. If he saw now, the surprise would be ruined.
Jakeâs eyes flicked to the ground again before focusing on your face. âThat makes me think it is my business.â
âIt is not,â you denied, feigning a calmness you didnât feel. âThere is nothing for you to see.â  Â
Jake smirked down at you, stepping closer. Your heart beat wildly like the wings of an ikran, but you refused to be moved and stood your ground. With another step, he came so close that his chest almost grazed yours. You tilted your chin up to see his face. Â
âYou say you're my teacher, but is that all you are?â His voice was low and his eyes dropped, half-lidded to meet yours.
âNo,â you answered with the little strength you could muster and his brow lifted. You swallowed. âWe are also friends.âÂ
âFriendsâŠâ He said almost like he was tasting the word. He nodded before concluding, âI can work with that.âÂ
You felt dazed as you carried your basket up to your hammock, toiling over when the nearness of Jake started feeling so different. After agreeing with him to meet for the evening meal, you gathered your things and parted ways, heart still pounding.Â
Though your prayers were being answered with more and more Na'vi warming up to him the longer he lived among you, Jake seemed only to have eyes for you. You thought at first that he was simply a good student, hardworking and strong, spending most of each day with you to learn. He rarely left your side. The silly way he spoke, the way he made you laugh, and his thoughtful actions made you forget that he was free to go where he pleased.Â
You couldnât deny that he filled your empty cup and saw you in ways nobody ever had. The thought of what it might mean made your heart twist with nerves and swell with a bone-deep longing. You could never forget how his hands grasped your waist as he sat behind you on your ikran, the weightless feeling having almost nothing to do with flying. You shook your head to clear it, but stopped short with a startled âoh!â as someone came into your path.Â
Looking up filled you with displeasure. Â
âI must speak with you.â Lekâann grabbed your wrist before you could react. Moving quickly, his other hand pressed against your back as he ushered you to a quiet corner of the room. âWhat is going on between you and Jakesully?â He asked severely, eyes piercing. âDo you not feel shame, YayotsyĂŹp?âÂ
âDo not call me that,â you hissed, trying to shake his hand from your arm, but his grip tightened.Â
âGo to the Oloâeyktan at once and ask for Jake to be removed from your responsibility,â he demanded.
âEnough, Lekâann,â you said firmly. âYou spew nonsense. Leave me alone.âÂ
You attempted to push past him but he held you in place. âYou must!â Â
âI will do no such thing,â you stated, twisting free from his grip. âEywa has put him into my care. Open your eyes, Leâkann. Jake is not the demon you make him out to be.âÂ
He exhaled impatiently. âMy eyes are open, they see the truth. They see that there is more than care in your eyes as you gaze upon the intruder,â he accused and your eyes widened. âTell me! What are your feelings?â
âMy feelings are of no concern to you,â you said, regretting having ever looked upon the unsavory man before you with care.Â
âCan you not see how he corrupts you? I knew this would happen,â he fumed, the beads on his braids mocking you as they swung with his intensity. âFor your own good, cut this tie.â
âFor my own good?â You scoffed. âWhy is it that you suddenly care about me, Lekâann?â
âIt is not sudden, YayotsyĂŹp,â Lekâann insisted, reaching a hand up to cup your cheek. âDo as I say.âÂ
âYou are a thorn in my side,â you spat, pushing his hand away and his nostrils flared. He gripped your basket as you tried again to leave. Looking down into it lit his eyes with burning fury.Â
âWhat is this? Is this for him?â He asked, ripping the basket from your hold and pulling out the half-finished armband. He almost laughed in deranged disbelief. âYou are shameless! End this courtship at once!âÂ
âCourtship?â You sputtered, stunned as you grasped for the armband. âLekâann, give it back!â
âA Skyperson and Naâvi pairing is an abomination,â Lekâann snarled, holding your things out of reach. âYou have brought disgrace upon yourself. Eywa will surely turn her back on you, if she hasnât already.â Â
âDo not use Eywa for your personal gain!â Your voice shook and raised to a shout. âWe are not courting, but I would easily choose a Skyperson like Jake over a despicable Naâvi like you!âÂ
He threw the basket to the ground and you gasped as its contents scattered. âFoolish, wanton woman! Are you so desperate for love that you would accept the affections of their kind?âÂ
âYou are cruel and heartless!â You screamed, tears pricking your eyes as his words reopened wounds of heartbreak you thought long since healed. âHow you deceived Oloâeyktan and Tsahik, I do not know!â  Â
Lekâann seethed, watching as you stooped down to pick up the materials, desperately chasing the stones as they rolled in different directions. His leg swung back and you anticipated its trajectory, but even before you could snatch the basket to your chest, he faltered.Â
You looked up to see Jake as he pushed through the crowd of onlookers that had gathered, drawn by the shouting. His eyes scanned the scene before locking on you. His expression darkened and Lekâann drew back as Jake advanced with powerful steps. Though you were relieved to see him, your stomach dropped, sobbing as your hands shook, hastily hiding the rest of the basketâs contents inside of it.    Â
âHey, you okay?â Jake asked urgently, crouching beside you. His brow furrowed with concern as tears poured down your cheeks. âYou hurt?â
âI am not hurtâŠI will be okay,â you assured weakly, curling over your basket and squeezing it to your shuddering chest.Â
âWhat happened?â
âHe thinks we are courting and does not approve,â you explained softly. âJake, it is best if we leave.â
Jake glanced up at Lekâann and hesitated, before laying a hand on your shoulder. He shook his head, saying, âNo. Heâs done enough damage. You go, Iâll catch up."Â
âJake, please,â you begged, heart sinking lower. You grasped his hand as he straightened up, turning toward Lekâann who lowered into a fighting stance, hissing unbecomingly. âDo not add fire to fire. He is not worth the trouble.âÂ
âBut you are,â he said, looking at you from over his shoulder and squeezing your fingers. âGo.â The softness of his voice was underscored with a sternness you had never heard from Jake. You knew from the set of his shoulders that any effort to convince him otherwise would be in vain. âSomeoneâs gotta put him in his place.â
âJake-,â you attempted and panic filled your hollow chest like a swarm of hellfire wasps as his hand slipped from yours.Â
âI got this,â he reassured with a nod, turning fully to engage Lekâann. âHear me, Lekâann,â he began and the hand that had held yours gestured back to you. âLeave this woman alone.âÂ
âWho are you to speak for her? Your kind holds no authority here,â Lekâann spat, ears pressing back. âDemons who prey on the weak.âÂ
They spoke but you barely heard as arrows of dread pierced into you upon realizing that Lekâann still held Jakeâs armband. He crushed it within his fist and it felt like he crushed your heart in its place.
âI defend whatâs mine,â Jake stated, taking a step forward.Â
âAnd I, mine,â Lekâann growled and you gasped as he tossed Jakeâs armband on the floor beneath him. He drew his knife from its sheath that rested on the small of his back. âY/n has turned her back against her people. You are the cause.â
Jake scoffed, âYou really want to do this?â
âYou Skypeople bring only pain and devastation,â Lekâann accused.
Blood pounded into your ears as your eyes trailed after the armband by Lekâannâs feet. You searched frantically for it as your view was interrupted by Jake and Lekâannâs movements. It rolled under Lekâannâs sidestep and a rush of violent desperation moved your legs forward to save it.Â
But a hand slid onto your shoulder and another gripped your arm to stop you. Looking back you saw Serunga' who turned you away from the fight.
âWhat are you doing?â she asked in a loud whisper, eyes frantic.Â
âYou had your chance,â Jakeâs voice came from behind you.
âThe armband,â you cried, trying to shake out of her grasp.
âLeave it!â Serunga' urged and she pulled you with all her strength. Your feet stumbled as she pushed through the crowd of people. The room began to spin around you in a mess of limbs, shocked faces, Jake, Lekâann, Serunga' and all of their voices combined into one cacophonous song. Â
âI'm gonna show her how a real man treats his woman. She'll forget all about your sorry ass. Don't speak to her again," Jake said with finality but his words were overshadowed by Lekâannâs shrill battle cry. You turned at the sound just as he lunged toward Jake.Â
âKehe! Jake!â you yelled over your shoulder as Serunga' ushered you up the spiral, watching as yells filled the air and other hunters attempted to intervene.Â
âCome. Jakesully will be okay,â Serunga' assured, wrapping an arm around your shoulders and squeezing. âTrust that you have taught him well.âÂ
She led you to the next landing and sat you on the floor, plopping herself beside you. You knew her words were true, but your heart still raced with worry. Serunga' regarded you with her kind eyes and shifted to sit behind you, taking your hair into her hands. You shook with fresh tears as she began braiding.Â
âMaâ Y/n?â Serunga' gently inquired after a moment, brushing through a section of your hair with her fingers. She waited until you hummed in response to continue. âDid you hear what Jakesully said to Lekâann just as we left?â
You shook your head in answer. âHe had said many things. They both did.â Â
Lekâannâs words stung you deeply but the grief you felt over the loss of the armband you had been working so tirelessly on was immense, even if irrational. You wiped your eyes and began picking through the basket that sat in your lap with a frown, finding the river stone nestled among the other materials. You cradled it and smoothed a hand over it, praying that its giver was not hurt.Â
âBut there was one very important thing.â You heard the excitement in Serunga'âs voice and your brow furrowed. You twisted toward her and saw she was smiling coyly.Â
âWhat was it?â you asked, unsure that there was anything to be excited about.Â
âHe called you his woman!âÂ
Your tired heart picked up in your chest and your eyes widened.
âYou are surprised?â Serunga' giggled. â We were all so certain you were already courting, even when you denied it. It was bound to happen, y/n. Though you may not speak of love with Jakesully, both of your actions overflow with it. He will surely ask you soon and you will no doubt say yes. Of this I am certain. Some will disapprove, of course, but I think he is quite handsome for a dreamwalker. I know you think this too.âÂ
Heat rushed to your face as she chattered away and resumed her work on your hair. His woman, Jakeâs woman. Had he truly said that? How long had Jake felt this way? How long had you returned his feelings before confronting them today? Deep down you had known and you saw the signs that there was something more, something new and beautiful, and unlike anything youâd known. But were you ready for another courtship? Would it last? Would Jake really stay here for the rest of his life to be with you? Your mind reeled with questions and possibilities, your heart aching with the same longing from earlier for the future you might have with Jake.Â
You and Serunga' were still sitting on the floor tying leather pieces into bundles and counting stones when Jake appeared. Your hands froze and your breath caught in your throat, scanning him for injury. Color was high in his cheeks and sweat glistened on his brow, but otherwise he looked perfectly fine. Relief flooded through you and you pushed off the ground.Â
Jake smiled triumphantly when he spotted you coming toward him and you almost ran the rest of the way. You threw your arms around him and he caught you with a huff, squeezing you close. One of his hands moved up your back to cradle your head. Â
âThank you, Great Mother,â you breathed, closing your eyes and finding peace in the sound of his heart beating.Â
âYou donât have to worry about Lekâann anymore,â he spoke into your hair.Â
âDo not say his name,â you requested. âYou ruin the moment.âÂ
Jakeâs laugh rumbled in his chest and he squeezed you impossibly closer, lifting you so your toes only brushed the ground.   Â
âThank you, Jake,â you added softly. Â
âAnytime.âÂ
All the worry and fear that had wound up so tightly within you melted away in the warmth of his embrace. He had held you before, but never like this. He was sturdy and strong like a fortress, enveloping you in the feeling of home, one that you would return to again and again. You were filled with gratitude that the blood that rushed through his veins remained unspilled. Jakeâs breath tickled your ear when a thought suddenly crossed your mind.Â
âDid you punch him?â you murmured curiously against his skin.Â
âYup,â he replied, resting his cheek on the top of your head.Â
âJakeâŠ.â You tried to sound disappointed though you were secretly very pleased. You lifted your head and pulled back just slightly to see his face. Jakeâs smile was unapologetic, eyes crinkling at the corners.Â
âI only got one swing in before things got out of hand with everyone trying to stop us,â he said, looking a little disappointed. âSomeone got Eytukan and it wrapped up pretty quickly after that.âÂ
Your brow shot up at the mention of the Olo'eyktan. âThen what happened?âÂ
âWe got a good talking to,â Jake explained, lifting a shoulder in a half shrug. âNothing I canât handle. Eytukan let me go after some of the people there backed me up. They saw the whole thing and heard what Lekâann said to you. Heâs in a load of trouble.âÂ
You nodded solemnly, wondering what would become of Lekâann. Such defensive behavior would not merit exile, but you knew deception would not be tolerated. Eytukan would finally see who Lekâann was and finally put an end to his machinations.Â
âAnd I think this is yours,â Jake added, bringing up a hand to reveal his armband.Â
You gasped and took it from him, checking over the integrity of the interlaced leather until you were sure it had endured the rough handling. Overjoyed, you found there was minimal damage, nothing you couldnât mend. Â
âIs it still none of my business?â he asked, watching you intently as his hands shifted to rest at the curve of your waist.Â
âIt was supposed to be a surprise,â you lamented, holding the accessory against your chest.Â
âThen I never saw it,â Jake declared with a nod and you beamed up at him. Â
He smiled back at you with so much affection in his gaze that you could have cried. You felt a sureness in your heart, as it exploded with gratitude and love, that Jake would always be there for you. To fight for you, to comfort you, to hold you, and not just as a pupil nor just a friend. All of your questions and doubts were allayed by the look in his golden eyes. He would stand beside you for all your days if you would have him. And you would. Â
âJake,â you said, a bit shyly, eyes dipping away before lifting up again. You shifted your hands from your chest to rest on his. âNow would be a good time to ask to court me.âÂ
አsummary: From chasing you down for stealing his breakfast to being able to hold you in his armsâhappiness is simple, and it all starts with you.
አpairing: Human!Jake Sully x fem!avatar!reader
አwarnings: Jake making jokes at his own expense, looots of fluff. once again i'm making an early morning fic.
âMorning, baby.â
Jake doesnât need to turn around to see whoâs decided to grace his presence.
If it wasnât for the dragging of feet behind him, or the soft sighs coming out your lips, itâd be the immediate contact you made with him. Your nails scratch a path down the side of his head, raking through the length heâs grown. Even if it was the result of not properly paying attention to his human body, you still think itâs cute. Handsome. Makes him look softer.Â
Jake hums a noncommittal sound when he makes out your familiar scent, head leaning back to rest on your stomach as you finally rest your palms on the curve of his shoulders.Â
Mornings at site 26 usually go like this: waking up at the crack of dawn,âgroggy complaints includedâa plate of âbreakfastâ you force Jake to eat, then an entire day of linking with your avatars to learn from the Naâvi. Â
Itâs been give or take a month since the two of you were taken in by the Omatikaya. Jake is on his path to become Taronyu, while youâve taken to the opposite. Something more gentle, yet all the same in value. You found yourself leaning towards healing, crafts like weaving, and gathering with other members of the clan. Itâs not only that too. You learn how to clean game after hunts, how to properly utilize what Eywa has given, and anywhere else they need you to be.
The Naâvi have deep respect for each other and the world around them. They uphold community and connection above anything else. In the clan, everyone has a purpose. No one is less or more, no one judged by what they can or cannot do. They are divided by ability and necessity, giving the same opportunities to everyone who is willing to give back to the clan. It can be exhausting at times, but immensely fulfilling. You feel that you actually have a place in the world.Â
Neytiri has recently taken you under her wing for this part of her lessonâof learning how to navigate the forest as if you are one with it, not against it. Itâs a pain in the ass, literally. You donât know how many times youâve slipped from stepping on the wrong branch, or missed a vine by an inch. Even worse, you canât even count the amount of times youâve laughed at Jake for making the same mistakes, only that it looks so much funnier when heâs the one committing them.Â
Itâs alright though. Youâre growing steady, understanding things better. More attuned to nature than youâve ever been on Earth.Â
âWhyâd you let me sleep in?â He knows you have a cute pout on your face without even looking. You sound groggy, voice soft, a little slow to speak. Probably blinking off the last bits of sleep away.
Jake happily slides his palms up your arms, holding it against his chest.
The gentle morning gleam looks shyly through the small windows of the compound, and it shines him in a light that makes everything look grounded. Steady. Like the low beating drum of Pandoraâs heart.Â
Heâs got a black tank on, tattoo ink peeking through both of his arms. Itâs a ratty old thingâprobably something he haphazardly threw in his duffle bag on the trip to the stars. His hair is all scruffed up, brown stubble grazing the bottom of his face.Â
Youâre practically melting against him, both arms coming down to drape over his shoulders, face relaxing into the space between his neck and shoulder. The silver chain of his dog tag offers a cool touch to your cheek, and you let that feeling ground you to the present. The hair on his skin, the scars and bumps, and the feel of his warmth rushing beneath. Your chest falls gently over the back of his chair, and though the position is awkward, you donât bother to move away.Â
âYouâve been coming back from links late,â His answers lowly into your skin, almost purring in his morning voice. ââyou need more sleep.â
Rolling your eyes, you scrunch your face to mock his words back in a high-pitched voice.Â
Now that is rich coming from mister first-to-get-on-and-last-to-be-off.
Jake watches as you detach yourself from him, head bobbing with the mocking before turning around to make your way towards the linking pods. Though before you can get 3 steps in, your boyfriend is already there to stop you.Â
The marine reaches a curled hand out, instinctively making a motion to grab at your tail to tug at itâlike he always does in his avatar when reprimanding you. But when heâs met with air, he remembers that neither of you are 9 foot tall blue tailed creatures at the moment. So instead, he pushes his chair a bit further in front and tugs the back of your (his) shirt before holding your right hip in place.Â
âBreakfast, baby. Saved you the best.â He smiles ruefully, pushing the gray cup to the space next to his own.
Youâre surprised he remembers what that word even means, because for the past 2 weeks Grace (and you) have had to drag him away from the linking pod to at least get something in his stomach. Though you suspect that with the presence of said redheaded woman heating herself a cup of coffee by the pantry table, sheâs had something to say about it today.Â
Grace just rolls her eyes good-naturedly at the two of you, returning a âgood morningâ when you greet her sweetly. Almost immediately, she goes back to nursing her cup of coffee, entirely skipping whatever it is that you and Jake are eating.Â
Breakfast looks drab at best, almost military. Like one of those MRE meals they serve in the army. Which youâre sure they actually are, considering the five of you have been hoarding these supplies back from Hellâs Gate. The cup contains some kind of processed oatmeal, irregular chunks blended into a white blob that looks the least bit appetizing. Your marine was kind to disguise that with slices of dehydrated fruit on top, as if that piece of vanity could wash away the grittiness of it all.Â
You sigh softly, scrunching your nose up in thanks before going towards your boyfriend to press a loving kiss on his temple. Your forehead nudges against his with a little bit more force, making his head shift backwards. He pushes back all the same, and you somehow end up rubbing your faces against each other. Jake rewards you with a small scoff-giggle as you pull away.
Before you can move to sit down, Jake pulls your left arm back again. Halting, you turn your head around to raise a waiting brow, lips upturned.Â
Though that expression is quickly replaced with an affectionate exasperation when he starts puckering his lips, wiggling his bushy brows teasingly. In his gaze heâs searching for approval. For your pride. You roll your eyes in pseudo-disdain, but go to follow his whims anyway, slotting your lips against his.Â
He likes this. Likes feeling like he can provide for you, take care of you and protect you. You can tell this behavior is amplified by being surrounded by Naâvi. They have an incredibly natural way of lovingâalmost primal. Giving gifts, bringing meat from hunts, scenting, itâs all so personal and sacred. Youâre not complaining. Not at all. If anything, you revel in being taken care of.
From the corner of your eye, you can see Grace shaking her head for the umpteenth time. Though she quickly gets back to her computer and piles of recently gathered data. After all this time being stuck in such a cramped little box that was definitely not meant for 5 people, sheâs come to tolerate you and Jakeâs affections for each other. You have a sneaking suspicion that itâs mostly because youâre able to reign Jake down on his high horse, reducing the amount of smartass comments he makes on the daily and actually convincing him to do his video logs. In a way, you can see how her heart softens at the marine now. And even if sheâs still tough, you know that itâs a far cry from the way she treated him the first time he entered her lab.Â
Once you reach for your breakfast, you stay standing beside Jake, one hand leaning all your weight to the edge of the table. Heâs got his hands running up and down the curve of your waist, more feeling down your ass actually, but you donât bother to shrug it off. Â
This position gives you the perfect view of what Jake has for his breakfast. Itâs nearly identical to your own, but you swear you count with your own eyes that heâs topped his with more berries than on yours. So with a finality in your bite, you snatch a piece of it off his cup, quickly chewing the sweet thing so he canât take it back. Jake doesnât say anything at first. He simply continues to spoon mouthfuls of his breakfast robotically. But then you start shaving off half the berries on his oatmeal, and the sweetness starts wearing offâsomething that Jakeâs worked so hard on to prevent.Â
âOh, so weâre stealing from the disabled now?â He simply states from where heâs sat.Â
And the comment genuinely makes you sputter, not expecting him to hit you with that, knowing you definitely have nothing to say back to him.Â
Your mouth drops open in an exaggerated manner, eyes growing wide before you point your spoon at him threateningly.Â
âIâm gonna get you back for that, Sully.â Yeah. Once your brain comes up with something real good to bite back at him.Â
Jake seems to understand the inner workings of your short-circuiting brain, because he just tilts his head in that overconfident, infuriatingly smug way of his that makes your body tingle and your thoughts turn to mush.Â
âMhm,â heâs challenging you, goddamnit. Waiting on you to snipe back at him.Â
âIâm serious, Jake. You better keep a real close eye on your Teylu next time.â
Heâs looking at you with something that says âthat all you got, sweetheart?â And you donât know whether you want to yell at him or kiss him senseless.Â
To placate yourself, you stalk closer to the man, pointing a finger to the tip of his nose. Jake doesnât even flinch at the intrusion on his face. He just stares into your eyes, smirking with almost half-lidded eyes before opening his mouth to softly bite at the finger.Â
âTry me.â
Next thing Grace knows, youâve already snatched Jakeâs half-eaten oatmeal chum, clutching it tightly as you make a run for it around the âdiningâ table.Â
âStĂ€'nĂŹ oe! (Catch me!)â The Naâvi slips out easily.
Thereâs not much room for movement,ânot especially for 2 grown adults chasing each other downâso you donât make it far before Jake has you in his grip. His palms hold steady on your hips before he tugs your entire body to sit on his lap.Â
The squeal it elicits out of you is deafening. And by acquired instinct your face scrunches, as if bracing for an animalistic hiss in defense. Â
Norm, whoâs hunched over his desk a few steps away, straight up ignores whatever is happening in the âdining roomâ. If Trudy were here right now, sheâd be hooting and hollering for you to win. Grace doesnât even have the energy to say anything. She closes her eyes, shaking her head as she tries her damn hardest to not pop a cigarette in her mouth at that moment.Â
âI am surrounded by children.â
The marine has you tight in his hold, tattooed arm hooking over your waist while his left hand has your jaw to face him in place. Heâs digging and rubbing his face into your neck like a damn dog, stubble tickling you in a way that has you jerking away from him. But to no availâdespite how much muscle mass he has lostâJake is still strong enough to prevent you from escaping.Â
âStop! Jake!â
He doesnât. He never does when heâs in these bouts of affection. Whether in human or Naâvi form, Jake will always have you in his hold, no matter the time and place.Â
Your salvation comes in the form of Grace Augustine, who comes to separate the two of you with a clap of her hand. âAlright, alright, break it up kiddies.â
You almost think you see a halo above her strawberry red hair.
âHands off my scientist, Jarhead.â She shoots a pointed look at the man, and Jake finally relents, but doesnât make a move to let you go. And you canât even do that yet because youâre still catching your breath, slumping tiredly against his chest while your chest rises up and down irregularly. Not long after, Jake is already getting on your nerves again because heâs blowing air into your ear, tickling you all the same without Grace being able to see.Â
You whine his name out again, too tired to get your revenge. You feel the way he tenses and tightens his hold on your waist at the sound, and before anything can happen you muster up everything in you to get up from his lap.Â
Grace then ushers the two of you to the pods, knowing village life with the Omatikaya starts early. And also, so she could finally get some goddamn peace and quiet.Â
âNow shoo.â
Youâre still reeling from the sudden adrenaline when you finally make it to your pod. Though after a few beats, you begin to carefully lift the pod lid, and from your peripheral vision you can see the way Jake gets ready to retort. But before he can get a squeak out of his mouth, Grace is already going at him, fingers closing into her thumb and motioning him to shut his mouth.Â
He recoils with an open-mouth grin, fixing his jaw and putting both hands up in surrender. And somehow, that is even more insufferable than him saying something.Â
Once seated in the soft gel bed, you look over to where Jake is adjusting himself like you did. You like to wait for him to get in, just so you can link at the same time. It helps to remind you that youâre not alone.Â
You canât wait to wake up next to him on your shared snonivi. Youâre forever grateful that the clan had provided you with only one hammock. While snonivi is usually meant for one individual, mated pairs could also occupy one leaf hammock. When you were brought to the clan, they assumed you and Jake were mates. You are. Sort of? The human equivalent of it, at least. You didnât know how to explain to Neytiri that you were together but not mated. You werenât in what the Naâvi called âcourtingâ either. Nonetheless, you, nor Jake, made any complaints about sleeping together.
Itâs a tight fit, but you love the intimacy that the small space gives you. How it cocoons both your bodies closer, the way it helps you perfectly curl up against Jakeâs chest like you were always meant to. That no matter which world, you will always be in his arms. Him before you. It makes your âsleepâ a hundred times better. Doesnât help that his handsome face is the first thing you see waking up, either.Â
When heâs made himself nice and comfortable, he goes straight to staring back at you, saluting off with two fingers on his forehead. You shake your head in fondness, blowing him an open palm kiss. Jake winks at the gesture, pretending to catch the kiss in the air before pocketing it in his heart. Itâs cheesy. So cheesy. But itâs your Jake, and you love him for it.Â
Then youâre off to a dreamless sleep in this body, ready for a new day of learning to see the world through different eyes.

The sun was shining over Awa'atlu, waves gently lapping against the shore. The weaved floor bouncing as the Metkayina bustled around the village, completing their daily duties.
It has only been a couple of weeks since the Sully family sought ututru among the Metkayina. The tension is heavy in the air, as the Sully family tries to adapt to their ways.
Outside of the tension between the two clans, there is an even bigger string of tension among the Sully family. The move has been hard on all the members, but it especially put strain between the mated pair.
Jake and Neytiri tried to keep it between them; to solve their problems without involving the children. Ultimately, the children could tell something was wrong with their parents.
Jake was at a loss. He did not know how to solve..no..survive this situation. His family is being hunted. His children are struggling to adapt to the foreign environment. His mate currently hates his guts, and practically aims her hatred of humans at her children..even if she does not know she is doing it. All Jake can do is adapt, to move forward, to someone survive this as a family.
Tsireya, along with her brother Aonung, were put in charge of training the sully kids; to teach them the ways of the Metkayina. Their friend Rotxo, also assisted them.
They were out training in the reefs near the village. Tsireya was teaching Kiri and Tuk about the animals that reside here; which ones to stay away from and which ones are safe to approach. Lo'ak reluctantly joined them, after some convincing from Tsireya.
He was swimming along the reef, close to the group when a flash of color caught his eye. He quickly turned his head in the direction of the object. He squinted his eyes, peering behind the rocks, all he could see was a flash of hair floating in the water. He panicked thinking that someone could have drowned, tapping Tsireya and pointing at the hair.
He swam to the rocks without waiting for an answer. Tsireya stayed behind with Kiri and Tuk, making sure the youngest couldn't see anything. Lo'ak reached the rocks, looking behind them. He expected to see a fellow Na'vi, but instead he was greeted by a sky person.
His eyes widened in fear, his body freezing. He wasn't sure what to do, after all what if they are from the RDA. How did a sky person even get here, without a mask at that. He turned to look at his sisters and Tsireya before making his mind.
He wrapped his arms around your waist and swam up to the surface, the others following behind him. His head emerged first, gasping for air, the others following suit. Tuk clung onto Tsireya as she took in the sight of you.
"Lo'ak what is this?" Tsireya asked, her voice shaking with fear as she holds onto Tuk protectively.
"I-I don't know...I thought I saw someone...I didn't think..I didn't think it would be one of the sky people.." he tried to explain it calmly, yet his mind was whirling with questions.
"She is injured" Kiri pointed out, looking at the cuts and scrapes along our face.
Lo'ak looked down at the women in his arms, unsure what to do. He pressed his ear against your chest, listening to a faint heartbeat. His eyes go wide, "she is alive! How is that possible? Sky people shouldn't be able to breathe the air." He looked at Kiri for some possible answers, yet Kiri herself is at a loss.
"We have to get her to dad. He is the only one who will know what to do." Kiri stated firmly, already swimming back.
"What?" Tsireya quickly intervened. "We cannot take her back to the village! She could be a distraction to lead the Sky people there!"
"What other choice do we have? She could also have valuable information. Dad will know how to handle this." Lo'ak started to swim behind Kiri, holding onto you tightly. Tsireya reluctantly followed behind, pulling Tuk with her.
They swam to the village edge, Lo'ak immediately laying you down on the sand. Kiri went on ahead to find her father. Many of the Metkayina villagers paused at the scene in fear of seeing a sky person. They surrounded the area, forming a circle, pointing and whispering.
Tonowari, the village Olo'eyktan, was the first to arrive at the scene after hearing the news. "What is the meaning of this Sully boy?" He demanded looking at Lo'ak with a calculating gaze. If he was angry he did not show it.
"I-we found her while swimming in the reef...she..she is alive and breathing.."Lo'ak explained it quickly. "It is not possible for sky people to breathe our air yet she does. And she is injured..sir." He looked up at Tonowari, shifting his body protectively over you.
He wasn't sure why he was protecting you. Maybe it's because he grew up around Spider and the scientists in the lab. That not all sky people are bad. Maybe it's because of the fact that you can breathe Pandora air, or that you are injured. Whatever it was, he was waiting for his father's verdict.
Jake pushed the crowd out of the way as he moved to the front. Kiri, Neytiri, and Ronal follow behind him. The moment he reached the front, his eyes flickered from Lo'ak to you on the ground, then back to Tonowari. His ears folded over, unsure of what to make of this situation.
He was in his marui with Neytiri, having another heated conversation when Kiri busted in explaining everything to him. He slowly walked over to where you lay, kneeling down on one knee, his fingers going to your neck to check for a pulse. There it was, a faint pulse.
He took a sharp inhale looking back up to Tonowari. "She is indeed alive, it's a faint pulse..but it is there." He explained to Tonowari, knowing the man would want his confirmation.
"You know the sky people better than us Jakesully. I greatly appreciate your achievements as Tourk Makto. That is why I granted your family uturu. However I cannot let a sky person reside in my village, I cannot bring harm to my people." He explained it calmly to Jake.
Jake looked back at you, taking in your outfit. It did not look like anything from the RDA, and nothing like the outfits back at hellsgate. They look too colorful, too different. If you weren't from the RDA he had to find out how you got here. He picked you up in his arms, walking over to Tonowari, ignoring the cold glare his mate was sending to the human in his arms.
"I know it is a lot to ask of you. I do not want to cause any trouble." He took a pause to gather his thoughts, "but..I ask of you to let her stay, to let her get treated. If she was from the RDA they would have never let her out of their sight. The fact that she breathes our air is a miracle. They would have kept her in the lab, running experiments trying to replicate it for the other sky people." Jake pleaded with Tonowari, he didn't know why but she could be valuable.
"How can you be so sure? They could have sent her themselves to gather intel," he looked into Jake's eyes trying to figure out what his plan was.
"I will interrogate her, find out the truth. And if she is from the RDA I'll extract information from her. If she turns out to be a threat...I'll kill her myself." Jake stood firmly, full of conviction.
Tonowari turned to Ronal, pleading to her with his eyes. JakeSully had a point, she could have information that could benefit them. Ronal closed her eyes and nodded once. "You will not leave her alone, someone has to be with her all the time," he gave JakeSully his permission with that one condition.
"I promise, I won't let her out of my sight..." he hesitated, his eyes flickering between Tonowari and Ronal. "If the Tsahik can be kind enough to tend to her injuries.." Jake knew this was a long shot, Ronal was the best healer but she also hated the sky people. Not that he could blame her.
Ronal's tail flickered behind her, irritated, her ears folding flat against her head. The last thing she wanted to do was treat a tawtute, yet if they wanted information they needed her alive. She huffed her breath, "I will treat the girl."
Jake carried you to their shared family marui pod, his mate and children trailing behind him. He laid her down on the floor, Ronal coming in after a short while caring her supplies. While Ronal was treating you, Neytiri pulled Jake to the side.
"What are you thinking!! Bringing a tawtute to our home!" she hissed, her ears pinned back in frustration.
"I had no choice, what was I supposed to do. She could be valuable," his ears pinned down, as he tried to explain it calmly.
"You had a choice, you chose to bring her here!" she was glaring at him.
"Neytiri..let's not do this right now..not in front of the kids.." he looks over at them. Thankfully they are surrounding Ronal, watching her treat you.
"She is a human! She does not belong here!" her voice trembled in rage.
"So am I!" Jake finally snapped, raising his voice and drawing attention to them. The kids head snapped to their direction, Tuk hiding behind Kiri. "So are our kids! We are part human okay, I get it you hate humans for what they did, but you can't let that affect us."
Neteyam and Lo'ak looked between their parents in worry, they know things aren't the best between them but they didn't think it was this bad. Ronal was ignoring the private conversation, only focusing on healing you.
"I hate them, Jake! I hate them! I hate them... I hate their pink little hands! I hate the insanity in their mind!"Â She completely forget about the audience in the room.
"Every time one of our children made a mistake, or do something different. You automatically blame it on them being part human. Tell me Neytiri do you hate that they are part human! Do you hate that I was once a human!" Jake was waiting for her answer, he desperately hoped that maybe deep down there was a way to fix this.
Neytiri was taken aback, her tail stopped moving, falling still to the ground. Lo'ak held his breath, sharing a glance with Neteyam. Tuk was silently crying holding onto Kiri, hating to see her parents fight. Even Ronal stopped her movement for a second, waiting to hear the answer. She hesitated, "....yes..."
Jake closed his eyes, he really hoped she said a different answer. He made up his mind slowly opening his eyes, "I can't do this Neytiri, I can't be with someone who hates a part of me, of our children. We are done." His firm, final. The kids stood in shock, first they learned their mother hated a part of them, now their parents are splitting up. "We will learn to coparent, I just can't be with you anymore."
She choked back tears, "that is not possible, we are mated before Eywa Jake! We are mated for life, we cannot separate!" her voice trembled with fear and hurt.
"I'll find a way, hell even if I have to ask Eywa myself." He turned around and walked back to the spot where they all were. He picked up Tuk, rubbing her back, whispering in her ear to calm her down. He looked down at Ronal who finished treating you.
"I have treated all her injuries, she is currently sleeping. I do not know when she will wake up," she looked between Jake and Neytiri. "As Tsahik..I will go ask Eywa for guidance..if she will..allow you two to unmate.." with that, she took her basket of supplies and left the Sully marui.
The marui was quiet, Neytiri stumbling into a corner to process what transpired. Neteyam was stunned, looking at the distance between his parents. Lo'ak and Kiri were more hurt. They look the most human so hearing their mother say that she hated their human part made them feel worthless in a way.
Jake put down Tuk to sleep for the night next to Kiri. He gestured to his sons to go to bed as well. He sat down next to you, keeping an eye out for the night. To think the appearance of human would be the last straw in his marriage. For an odd reason Jake felt...comfortable around your presence. He found you familiar, yet he doesn't know why. Thinking back to his human self on earth..he has never seen you before. He had more questions than answers.
Morning rolled around slower than usual. Jake swears time was moving slower. He stayed up all night, his mind reeling from the events. You didn't show any signs of waking up. He didn't know if he had any patience left to wait for answers.
The kids slowly woke up as the sun shined on their faces. Rolling up their hammocks as they get ready for the day. No one said anything, the tension still high. Jake prepared breakfast, bringing some berries he foraged. The kids sat closer to Jake than Neytiri, her face morphing to pain before masking her expression.
Neteyam threw his mother a sympathetic glance. He understood her hatred for humans, in fact they all did, that didn't make it any less hurtful to hear. They just needed some time to all heal.
After breakfast, Neteyam and Lo'ak were tasked with staying in the mauri, to keep an eye on you. Kiri and Tuk went to meet Tsireya for their daily lessons. As for Jake and Neytiri, they were called to the Cove of the Ancestors by Ronal.
When they got there, they saw Tonowari and Ronal waiting for them. Ronal explained how Eywa answered her prayers, giving them permission to unmate. It is unheard of for Na'vi to divorce, as they mate for life. This would be the one and only exception. Ronal explained that they would have to dive and connect their Kurus to the spirit tree.
Jake dived first, bringing his braid over his shoulder and connecting it to the tree without hesitation. Neytiri on the other hand was heartbroken, she did not want things to end like this but she had no choice left, this was for the better.
The moment she connected her kuru to the tree, they could see a line connecting them. In a matter of seconds that line was severed, breaking their mating bond. They both gasped, pulling their kuru's away from the tree.
It was done. They are now an unmated pair. It felt different, they shared many memories and hardships, only for it to end like this. They swam up to the surface, facing Ronal and Tonowari.
"It is done." Jake stated firmly, his voice void of emotion.
Tonowari nodded solemnly to Jake. While Ronal consoled Neytiri. Yes the two women shared their differences, however this situation was unique and heartbreaking.
"Dad! She is awake!" Jake quickly turned his head when he heard Neteyam's voice. Neteyam was on his Ilu swimming fast to them. He shared a look with Tonowari and they quickly headed back.

You felt a dull pain through your entire body. You could have sworn you had died after you got hit by that car. You open your eyes groggy, slowly your eyesight focusing.
You expected to be in a hospital, instead you are treated by a woven ceiling. You try and sit up slowly, hissing as you feel a sharp pain in your chest, probably a broken rib.
You finally look turn your head to look around and freeze. Your eyes widen in surprise as you see two tall blue cat like aliens looking at you. You forget all the pain that is in your body and spring up on your legs, backing up to a corner. "Who are you! What are you! Please don't eat me!" your brain was scrambled as you try to make sense of this situation.
One of the blue aliens put his hands up infant of him, like he was trying to calm down an animal. "We mean no harm...I am Neteyam..and that," he pointed to Lo'ak, "is my little brother Lo'ak." His voice was calm and soothing, trying to not make you panic even more.
"um..wh-what are you?" you pick up the closest thing to you, a wooden pole, and hold it infant of you for protection.
The two brothers shared a confused looked, you should know what they are. All RDA members know who they are...so why did you look so confused. Lo'ak spoke up this time, "We..we are Na'vi..I found you." While they grew up around Norm, Spider, and Max, their English wasn't the best. They knew enough to communicate basically.
"Na'vi..?" They didn't look they wanted to harm you, but you couldn't be sure.
The older one, Neteyam you remembered turned to his brother. "I will go get father, you stay and look after her." He quickly ran out of the marui to go get his father.
You stared at Lo'ak and he stared at you. It was quite awkward between you. "My father knows better, my brother went to get him." He reassured you as he sat down, eyes raking over your body as he tried to figure you out. "You are injured, sit"
Going against your better judgment, you slowly sat down. Your back facing the corner, pole in hand for protection. Your body was aching but you chose to ignore it. You studied the boy before you, before looking around taking in the scene. You could feel the waves below you, rocking the floor a little. The hut was pretty spacious, made of wood and ropes. You had no idea how it was made, but it was cozy. A calming sensation filled you as you rocked slightly with the waves.
After an awkward ten minutes, you see the other boy from earlier run in with a couple of extra people. You gripped the pole tighter as you took them in. They were much much taller than the two boys, their faces were unreadable. The guy in front looked at you with a stern face. They were way scarier than the two boys.
The guy kneeled infant of you, putting his hands up like the two boys did. "I am not going to hurt you." His voice was firm, his face not wavering.
"Yeah I don't trust that.." you mumble holding the pole closer.
Jake's eyes flickered between you and the pole. "Are you RDA?"
You looked at him confused..."RDA? What is that? Also who are you?"
Jake's gaze pierced through you, as if he was trying yo read your mind. You squirmed uncomfortably under his gaze. "My name is Jake." he avoided mentioning what the RDA were. Jake was great at reading people, being in the marines then hellsgate taught him that. You weren't lying, he could tell that much. You looked scared and confused, like you were seeing everything for the first time.
"Behind me is Tonowari, Ronal, and Neytiri. You already met my two boys." He pointed to the others behind him with his chin. The other adults didn't bother to hide their distain. Except for Tonowari, his was stern yet curious. "How did you get here? Lo'ak found you drowning in the ocean." Jake asked cautiously.
You hesitated, for some reason you trusted him. He had that whole don't mess with me look, but he seemed like a fair person. Or maybe it was because his name was also Jake. "I..I was walking along the waterfront back home..when I got hit by a car and thrown into the ocean. I could barely move and um..thought I was dead." you explained slowly, your grip slowly loosening on the pole.
"Home? You mean earth..?" he asked confused, how could someone just randomly show up from earth.
"Yes earth...I mean where else?" You looked at the dude confused. I mean to be fair he was a blue alien.
"You are on Pandora..which is years away from earth." He explained.
"What? No how is that possible I was on Earth, and what even is pandora?" You panicked now realizing you are on an alien planet far away from home.
After some back and forth Jake managed to explain some of the basics, and asked some questions. You think it's his way of trying to see if you are an enemy. He stood up and walked to the group, explaining everything to them. You listened to them speak in a different language. Lo'ak and Neteyam came closer to you curiously, with Lo'ak poking parts of your body.
Jake came back and kneeled infant of you. "I will be teaching you our ways, and my children will help as well. You should get some rest, we will start your lessons tomorrow." His tone left no room for arguments.
Jake led you back to your makeshift bed and allowed you to sleep while they all left. They did their duties for the day, the kids training, while the warriors went hunting. During lunch Jake woke you up to eat, handing you a plate then immediately telling you to sleep after finishing. That was his way of making sure you heal from your injuries.
Slowly day bled into night and the Sully's returned to their marui. Jake sat down next to you, waking you up for dinner, while his kids sat around you. Neytiri sat far away by herself, sending you a glare every couple of minutes.
You were introduced to two of his other kids, Kiri and Tuk. Tuk was very curious, throwing you a barrage of questions. Jake, Neteyam, Lo'ak, and Kiri took turns translating between you all.
You learned that Neteyam was the oldest and Tuk was the youngest. Neteyam was apparently a warrior, and his brother Lo'ak was training to be one. Kiri and Tuk talked about the ocean to you. You learned that Tuk loved to weave, making many different things like bracelets.
Slowly they all trickled to their hammocks, the days events catching up to them as they fall asleep. Jake slept close to you, making sure you don't do anything throughout the night.
You laid in your bed looking up, lost in thought. To everyone here you looked like you were handling things easily. The truth couldn't be farther than that. You were terrified, you missed your family, and most importantly you missed Jake. You couldn't panic, that would only make things worse. You had no choice but to adapt.
Tomorrow was a new day, and it was the day you started your lessons. You slowly drifted off to sleep, your thoughts filled with memories of your home and worries about your future.

It took a good week to fully transfer your bedroom downstairs. Since you wanted your room to be accessible to Jake you made some changes. You knew Jake was too prideful to want help, so you made small changes that no one would think about.
You changed your bed frame to a lower level one. Just in case he ever wants to sit on your bed he will be able to do so easily. Instead of the floating shelves, you brought a floor two tier shelf and filled it with all your books and collectibles. Your desk was already a good size, and so was your chair. You took out any rugs that would make his wheelchair hard to move.
It did not take long until Jake visited your house again. You excitedly led him to your bedroom. You sat on your bed while he was exploring your room.
Jake wheeled himself around your room, taking in the sight. He has never been in your room before, but it looked like how he expected. The light pink bedding, the stuffed animals arranged on your bed neatly, the flower pots all around your room.
He noticed the low bed frame that was suspiciously just the right height for him to transfer to, the books that were at arms length, how if he wanted he had easy access to all the items in your room. He smiled unknowingly, this was the first time anyone had cared so much about him that they went out of their way to make him feel welcomed and comfortable.
He quickly wiped a tear that escaped his eyes and turned around with that same cocky grin pretending not to notice. âNice room, princess. Itâs veryâŠyou.â He pointed at the photos on the wall. âThough Iâm hurt you didnât add me up there.â He placed his hand over his chest, turning his grin into a playful pout pretending to be hurt.
You rolled your eyes smiling at his dramatic act. âWell I would have added you if I had a picture of you to add.â
Jake laughed, âFair enough, I guess Iâll have to send you a couple of pictures to pick from. Donât worry princess, Iâll send you the pictures I look handsome in.â He wheeled himself over to my bed and transferred himself off his chair to my bed.
Your fingers gripped the bedding to stop yourself from helping him. You know he can do it one his own, but you cannot help but want to help him. You physically moved your eyes to his face to stop yourself from jumping to help him. âAre you sure you have any you look handsome in?â You ask him, grinning teasingly.
âOh you wound me, princess. Iâll have you know this face never lets me down.â He settled in your bed and turned his body to angle it to your direction. He wanted to be closer to you. He couldnât help himself. He was drawn to your presence, no matter how many people are around he sought you out.
All he could think about was how you feel sitting on his lap. Your arms wrapped around his neck as one of his arms settle around your waist, keeping you steady. His other arm would be creasing your back as you talk about your day, complaining about all your troubles, finding comfort in his presence.
As much as he wanted it, he knew it would never happen. It was his wishful thinking that a girl as pretty and wonderful as you would ever want to be with a guy like him.
A guy who couldnât walk, who wouldnât be able to protect you properly, who wouldnât be able to take you out, to drive you around, to carry you. You deserved so much better than a cripple like him.
It was a bitter thought, he wanted you so badly that he would settle to just being your friend. Being around you was enough for him.
âJake..Jake?â You wave your hand in front of his face trying to get his attention.
Jake quickly snapped back to reality, he tilted his head to the side looking into your eyes. âYeah?â
You furrow your eyebrows concerned, âare you okay? You spaced out there.â You look back into his eyes trying to decipher what he was thinking so deeply about.
Jake shook his head, quickly pushing his thoughts away. âYeah, yeah Iâm fine, princess. Nothing to worry about.â He put on a smile trying to ease your concern.
You are not really convinced by his statement, you let it go anyway knowing he would tell you if he wants to. You both talk and play around in your room, both of you forgetting about the incident.

It has been months since Jake started to come over to your house. Everyday after school he would come over to your house, and on the weekends he comes over from morning to late evening.
In the beginning he would only stay in your room, but after some gentle nudges he started to spend time with your family as well. He would join you at the dining table to eat with your family.
Your parents accepted him with open arms, making sure he feels welcomed. They marked a permanent spot on the table for him, added his birthday to the calendar, and got him gifts for any holiday that occurred.
When it came to spending time in your room, it was actually very calm. Jake liked to flirt a lot, and in response you flirt back. He would always have his hand wrapped around your own; he was very much a physical touch person.
You two always ended up cuddling in your bed, watching movies together or just talking. Jake was always attentive, nodding along when you complained to him, his hands moving up and down your arm in a soothing motion.
All you have to do is mention something to him once and he will store it in his brain. You loved that about him, how he remembers the tiniest details even if you forget about them yourself.
You fell for Jake hard. How could you not catch feelings for him? At first you thought it was a little crush because of how close you are. But the more you spent time with him, the more you realized you like him.
You wanted to confess your feelings for him but you were afraid. What if he didn't feel the same way? You did not want to ruin your friendship; you liked being close and did not want to lose him. But it has been getting harder and harder to keep your feelings a secret.
Jake was over at your house again, you were both cuddling on your bed watching something on tv. Your head rested on his shoulder, his arm wrapped around you with his hand resting on your hip. You are both sharing your blanket.
You couldn't focus on the screen, not when you could feel the warmth radiating off his body. You titled your head up to get a clear view of his face.
He looked down at you with a small lazy smile. "What's that look for, princess?" He squeezed your hip gently before his thumb traced small circles on your hip.
Your mouth automatically formed into a smile the moment you saw his smile. His smile was the most adorable addictive smile you have ever seen. You could stare at his smile forever and never get bored. "What look?"
Jake's thumb paused when he saw how your eyes were looking at him with such affection. He slowly continued his movement, "like you are admiring me...like I am the only thing you see.." He murmured softly, his face leaning down until his forehead rested on yours.
You could feel your heart rate speed up from the closeness. "Maybe that's because I am admiring you.." You say softly, closing your eyes, taking a deep breath to calm yourself. This was the perfect opportunity to confess. If you didn't do it now, you never will.
Your eyes fluttered open, locking onto his. "Jake I-" you stuttered nervously, should you actually do this now..what if this ruins everything.
Jake could feel your nerves bounce in waves off of you. His other hand slowly comes up to cup your cheek, his thumb gently creasing your cheek. "You know you can tell me anything, princess"
You could feel his warm breath fan over your face as he talks. You gather whatever courage you have left, "Jake I like you...I have for a while now." You did it, you finally confessed your feelings for him.
Jake's breath hitched the moment the words left your mouth. His thumbs stopped their movement, and his mouth opened slightly in surprise. He stared into your eyes trying to figure out if you were being serious.
It took a while for his brain to comprehend your words. He finally spoke up, his voice shaky, "You..you like me..?" He asked in disbelief. He couldn't believe that the girl he has had feelings for actually likes him back.
You look a little confused on why he was asking, as if you didn't make it very clear. "Yes..I like you, in fact I really really like you. I understand if you don't like me back....I just had to tell you." You said it firmly. You couldn't back out now, you were going to see this through.
Jake closed his eyes, taking a deep breath. "Fuck..princess.." he slowly opened his eyes, "ofc I like you..how could I not?" He looked into your eyes deeply. "Who in their right mind wouldn't like you?"
You felt your heart speed up at his answer. You didn't actually think he liked you back. You felt relieved that you didn't ruin your friendship.
Jake's eyes flickered down to your lips then back to your eyes. "May I..?" He asked softly, waiting for your verbal consent.
Your cheeks heated up knowing what he was asking about. Your hand went up to his chest, gripping his shirt. "Y-yeah"
His nose brushed against yours, tilting his head slightly for a better angle. His lips softly brushed against yours, not a kiss, just a slight touch to let you back out if you wanted to.
When you didn't pull away, he moved the hand on your hip to your back to steady you. He pressed his lips firmer against yours, kissing you agonizingly slow. As if he was making sure this wasn't a dream. Holding you so gently as if you were made of glass.
You were completely lost in the kiss, your mind going blank. When he pulled away he left you breathless and dizzy. Your eyes fluttered open, looked up at him panting slightly.."I-wow.." You were speechless.
He chuckled softly, his thumb rubbing small circles on your back. "You have no idea how long I have been waiting to do that." He rested his forehead against yours again.
You let out a soft laugh, "What now?" You ask him.
He hums before answering, "well now you are my girlfriend, princess."
You slap his chest playfully. "You have to ask first, I could say no."
He laughed in disbelief, pulling his head back to look at you clearly. "You confessed first princess, then we kissed...isn't that an answer?"
You look at him with a serious playful stare. He shook his head smiling before conceding. "Alright I got the hint." He pulled back slightly, taking your hands into his, "Princess, would you do the honors and let me be your boyfriend?"
You pretend to think about it. "Well if you insist..I would love to be your girlfriend." You smiled cheekily at him.
Jake grinned happily with his signature smile. He immediately pulled you into his lap, wrapping his arms around your stomach and pushing you firmly so that your back is pressed against his front.
He buried his face into your neck pressing a soft kiss, before pulling back and resting his chin on your shoulder. "Now you're mine, and you're stuck with me forever princess."
You settle into his embrace without a fight, relaxing against him. He was very warm and you felt protected wrapped up in his arms like this. "I don't even want to leave, practically addicted now."
"Good I'll keep you addicted then." He said proudly, kissing your neck one last time before you both settled to actually watch the movie.
đ đ đ đ đ
Over the next two years, nothing really changed between you and Jake. You two were already close before you started dating. Jake was now more openly shameless with his affection.
You thought Jake couldn't get anymore clingy, oh how wrong you were. You two were practically glued at the hips now.
Jake followed you around like a lost puppy. Wherever you go, Jake was right there next to you. His hand always had to be touching you. He was afraid it was just a dream, that he would wake up and you wouldn't be his. By having his hand on your back, hips, or holding your hand; he made sure that you were real - that this was real.
You didn't mind his physical clinginess, in fact you relished it. You loved having him on you, the warmth and affection his hand brings. Knowing Jake was with you brought you comfort.
While your relationship was seemingly perfect, that didn't stop Jake from feeling you deserved better. Sometimes he would get in his own head, self deprecating thoughts he couldn't control.
Today was one of those days. You were cuddling with Jake in his room, just watching a movie. You noticed he went quiet, which was a bad sign because Jake is never quiet.
You shifted to turn and face him in his lap, tilting your head up. You could tell Jake wasn't with you. His eyes were unfocused, as if he was deep in his head.
You brought your hand and gently creased his cheek. "Jake, are you okay?" Your eyes flickered across his face, trying to decipher what he was thinking so deeply about.
Jake snapped out of his thoughts, eyes coming back to reality as he looks down at you. "Hm..yeah I'm fine princess, nothing to worry about." His hand stroked up and down your back, trying to ease your concern.
You know he is lying. "Jake, don't do that. Don't pull away from me...I am your girlfriend. Tell me what is wrong, what you are thinking so deeply about."
Jake lets out a frustrated breath. He didn't want to burden you, didn't want to put his insecurities on you. "Princess...please just drop it." His voice was pleading, so unlike his usual confident self.
You furrowed your brows in frustration. Why couldn't he just trust you with this. Always putting up these walls. "Jake no I won't let this go. You always put up these walls. Never letting me in fully. Why don't you trust me?"
His jaw clenched. "What do you want me to tell you? That I don't think I'm enough for you." His voice cracked. "That you deserve better than a guy with legs that don't work. To be able to carry you around. To be able to take you on dates alone without a chaperone. How I wish I could be the man you deserve." With every sentence his voice trembled with pure desperation and frustration - not at you, but at himself, at the situation he was in.
You felt your heart break at his words. How could he even think those things? Could he not see how much you loved him? How much you need him? "Jake..sweetheart.." You cover his hands with yours, gently guiding them to your lap, holding them tightly and reassuringly. Your eyes locked with his; soft, loving, affectionate. "I chose you. Out of all the choices I've made in my life, choosing you is my proudest decision. Not once have I questioned picking you. I love you from the top of your head to your smallest toe. You are enough - you always have been. I will always choose you."
Jake went speechless. He has never heard someone speak about him with so much conviction. His eyes glassed over in tears. "You would always pick me..?" he asked softly, hesitantly. "Even if my legs don't work...and I can't give you everything?" His eyes swept over your face, trying to make sure you wouldn't change your mind.
You let go of his hand and cupped his face, wiping away a stray tear that escaped his eyes. "I will always pick you," you whispered, locking eyes with him. "In every life, I will pick you over and over again." You watched his expression soften as the doubt leaves his mind.
He let out a wet chuckle, leaning his forehead against yours. "Even if I was a blue alien?" he asked, his playful mood returning in full swing.
You roll your eyes at him with a smile; pulling away from his forehead and pinch his upper arm. "Jake, we were having such a heartfelt moment, and you just had to add that in."
He laughed, tilting his head to the side as his hands pulled you back in. "You didn't answer the question, princess."
"Fine fine," you let out an exasperated sigh. "I would pick you even if you were a blue alien....happy now?" No matter how much you pretended to be annoyed at his question, you couldn't help but smile fondly at his cheekiness.
He grinned, pleased with your response. "Good, and I would pick you too..in every life." He sealed his promise with a gentle kiss to your forehead.
The earlier tension slowly dissipated as you both melted into each other's embrace. Your head was tucked under his chin as you snuggled into his chest, his arms wrapped around you.
"Do you want to get married?" he asked casually, keeping his voice low to avoid disturbing the comfortable atmosphere. He felt you tense up against him and quickly clarified, "I meant in the future, not now obviously we are still in high school." He let out a soft laugh kissing the top of your head.
You relaxed again into his embrace. "Well you said it so casually I thought you were asking me now..but yeah..eventually I do want to get married and have kids."
"How many kids do you want?" he asked, hopeful. He never thought about his future, but having a family with you felt right.
You took a second to think about it. "I want four kids: two boys and two girls. You know, to make it even."
Jake hummed in agreement. "Four sounds perfect. I'll give you four kids after we graduate."
You laughed softly, tilting your head up to look at him. "I cannot wait for our future then." You smiled at him sweetly.
Jake looked down at you, mirroring your smile. He leaned down and captured your lips in a tender, loving kiss.
He could already imagine your house filled with children running around. Your daughters having your features, while your sons take after him. He would teach all your children how to fight. You would be so patient with them. Firmly but softly correcting them when they make a mistake. Oh, how he couldn't wait for that day.

It has been a year since that conversation, and now you were both in your last year of high school. To say you were excited was an understatement. After you graduate, you and Jake would be legal adults, free to build the future you both dreamed of.
Currently, you were at your older brother's wedding. Jake didn't come as your plus one, your brother invited him as family. You were sitting next to Jake, resting your head on his shoulder as you both watched the newly weds dance.
You were happy for your brother. He found someone who could handle his dry personality. You absolutely adored your sister-in-law. She was the sister you never had. She was very sweet, intelligent, and kind. You wondered how your brother even managed to win her over.
You and Jake enjoyed yourselves: you fed each other cake, joked around, and talked quietly in the corner.
Finally, it was time for the bouquet toss. You sat down between your parents and Jake, not participating. All the ladies flocked in a circle, waiting for the bride to throw the bouquet. Like hounds eyeing a meat of stake.
The bride turned around, her back to the crowd, and threw the bouquet high in the air. The ladies jumped, each hoping to be the lucky maiden that caught the flowers. The bouquet flew over all their heads and landed straight into your lap.
Jake and your parents laugh in amusement as you stare down at your lap in surprise. "I am not even an adult yet!" you say, letting out a nervous laugh as you glance between your parents and Jake.
"Well guess that means we are the next to get married, princess." He teased, looking thoroughly pleased that you caught it.
"As long as you're both adults when you get married, your mother and I have no problem with it." Your father pinched your cheek. "I like Jake, won't let anyone else have my daughter but him." He gives Jake a pat on his back.
"I agree with your father, Jake is the perfect man for you. We both approve." Your mother hugged Jake. "You are practically already family."
Jake's eyes watered at their approval. He hugged your mother back gently. He could see where you got your kindness from. Your parents accepted him and treated him as their son from the moment you two started to hang out.
The night passed slowly with no problems. Everyone slowly retired to their homes. You bid farewell to your brother and sister-in-law, congratulating them one last time.
Jake went back to your house with you and your parents. You showered first. Getting ready to relax after this long day. When you came out of the bathroom, you saw Jake holding a small square box, looking down at it.
"What's in it?" you asked softly to not startle him, as you walk to his wheelchair.
Jake looked up at you then back down at the box. Slowly opening it to show a beautiful simple ring. "This is my grandmother's ring..she gave it to me before she passed. Said to give it to my future wife." He paused and looked up at you with such tender eyes. "It's the ring I'll propose to you with."
You felt your breath hitch, eyes glossing over, as you knelt down next to his wheelchair. "Jake.." your voice stuttered. You didn't even know what to say. It was so beautiful and meaningful. You hugged him tightly. "I swear you always find a new way to make me fall in love with you everyday."
He chuckled softly, creasing your hair. "When we are both ready, we will already have everything we need." He kissed the top of your head, then pulled away placing the ring box in your hand.
You carefully brought the box up closer to your face. It was a beautiful ring, very simple. It was a gold ring with a pear cut diamond as the centerpiece. The body of the ring looked like a vine, with leaf hooks that enclosed the diamond.
"Jake...it's really beautiful.." you closed the ring box and looked back up at him.
He smiled, relieved that you liked the ring. "You like it?"
"Like it? Jake I love it," you kissed his cheek and handed him the box.
He took the box back and placed it in his bag. "I'm glad, now that's one less thing I have to stress about." He winked at me before grabbing his clothes and wheeled to the bathroom.
After Jake showered and got ready for bed, he transferred himself to my bed. You braided your hair before you crawled into the bed right next to him. Jake immediately wrapped his arms around your waist, pulling you close.
"Goodnight, Jake," you whispered as you closed your eyes, snuggling into his side.
"Goodnight, princess," he said, kissing your forehead and closing his eyes. The day's events quickly caught up to you both as you surrendered into a deep, peaceful sleep.

You were now two months away from graduation. Jake was out today at a doctor's appointment with his mother.
You were studying on your desk when you decided to take a little break. You reached over for your water bottle when you accidentally brushed the picture frame you had on your desk. It fell off your desk and hit the ground. You quickly went to pick it up, turning it around to see a big crack on the glass going through Jake.
A feeling of unsettling dread filled your stomach. You shook your head pushing away that feeling. You took the picture out of the frame and placed it on your desk, throwing away the broken frame. You went back to your studying, trying to push away the feeling of unease.
Soon the day bleed into night. You stretched your arms over your head, before closing your text book. You heard a knock on your door. "Come in," you responded without looking up as you put away your stuff.
Your father came in, his face grim. You turned in your chair to look at him, and the moment you saw his face, the dread hit you harder. Your father went and sat on your bed, gesturing for you to sit next to him. You got up from your chair and walked over sitting next to him. "Your face is scaring me right now...is everything okay?" you asked hesitantly, afraid of the answer.
After a little while, your father finally spoke up. "..Jake's mother called..she is in the hospital. When they were coming back from their appointment they got in crash.."
You felt your heart drop into your stomach. "What?? Are they okay? Is Jake okay? How did it happen?" you rapid fire the questions, your hands trembling as they balled in your lap.
Your father held your hands slowly, "I'm sorry baby..Jake..he didn't make it.."
You felt your throat tighten, a strangled sound escaping you. Tears flowing before your mind can register your father's words. The dread, the broken picture frame - it all made sense now. Yet you still couldn't believe it. There was no way this was true, you were supposed to see each other tomorrow. He couldn't be.
You shake your head frantically. "No..no..no..dad no that's not true," your voice cracks in pain as you try to navigate this situation. "It can't, he can't, he is supposed to-" you couldn't even finish your thought before you break down crying in your father's arms. Your breaths coming out quick and frantic, shoulders heaving violently with each chocked sob.
Your father closed his eyes, swaying you side to side, his hand rubbing up and down your back. There wasn't anything he could say to ease the pain. All he could do was hold his babygirl as your broken sounds filled the room.
Everything blurred into one after that. You don't remember much from his funeral. All you remember is that this is the spot he will sleep in forever. As the funeral ended, his mother gave you a box of his belongs. She told you that these all belonged to you.
You put the box in the corner of your room, not brave enough to open it. The wound was still fresh, and seeing his belongings would only break you down further.
Graduation came soon after that. You went along the entire thing with reluctance. If the school hadn't threaten to withhold your diploma, you wouldn't have shown up. As you sat in your seat, waiting for your turn to walk the stage, your eyes keep drifting to the spot Jake was supposed to sit. You pushed down the ache in your heart and forced your self to focus throughout the ceremony.
You stopped talking to your friends, lost your smile, the spark in your eyes. Jake taught you to see, and now that he wasn't here, there was nothing left to see.
Your family was worried. They could see the numbness flowing through your body. They were there for you the entire time, never speaking, just a silent presence for you to lean on.
Three months passed since the funeral and you found the courage to look through the box. When night came, you sat on the floor of your room, slowly opening the lid. The first thing you saw, sitting on top of everything else, was the ring box. Your hands trembled as you slowly picked it up, tears pricking from the corners of your eyes. You held the box close to your heart, cradling it, as you let out a silent sob, curling over on the floor.
You thought you were ready to face his belongings, yet seeing the reminder of the future you were supposed to have shattered your heart all over again. You slowly picked yourself up, wiping your face with the back of your hand. Your hair sticking to your cheeks. You sniffled as you opened the ring box. You carefully took out the ring and slipped it on your ring finger.
"When I said I chose you, I really meant it.." you took a pause to gather your thoughts. "You are the only one for me, no one can ever compare to you..I will always be yours..maybe in our next life we will have better luck..to have the future we both dreamed of." You sealed your vow with a kiss to your ring. You closed the lid of the box and moved it back to the corner. Seeing the ring drained you more than you expected, you couldn't handle seeing everything else currently.
As time went on, you slowly started to take items out of the box. Gradually, your room started to fill up with his belongings. One of his hoodies lays draped over your bed, while the others filled your closet. His watch rested on your vanity, his cologne sitting next to your perfumes, his wheelchair was folded and parked next to your bed, and his pictures decorated your walls. Most importantly, the ring never left your finger.
On days you craved his touch, you spray his cologne on one of his shits and wear it to sleep. When you need his advice, you visit his grave and talk to him, telling him everything you cannot say to anyone else. When you walk through a store and see something he would like, you buy it and place it on your shelf. On his birthday you buy a little cupcake and spend the evening with him at his grave. When guys tries to hit on you, you show them your ring and tell them you are married. Slowly you started to smile again. His memory no longer hurt you; it only brought you comfort.
Soon you turn twenty-seven. Just like that it has already been ten years since Jake's death. Not a day has passed without his memory lingering in your mind. To you it feels like just yesterday you were in your room, young and naive, making promises to each other.
Today was one of the rare days you left your room. You decided to take a walk along the waterfront. It was a beautiful day - the sun was shining, the birds chirping, children running around with their families. You enjoyed the moments that left you with no room to think. You glanced out at the ocean, the water sparkling like a kaleidoscope.
An out of control car slammed into you without. Pain erupted throughout your body, as you were thrown into the ocean. Shouts echoed around you in panic, fading as you sank deeper under the surface.
Your lungs burned as they filled with water. Your arms and feet flailing desperately in an attempt to pull you up. A heavy weight filled your body, as if it was pulling you down. Bubbles escape your mouth as you gasp for what little air was left. Soon, your body gave up. Your limbs stilled, surrendering to the currents pulling you deeper into the ocean's embrace. Your eyes slowly closing, accepting your fate.
Maybe in another life, you would meet Jake again. A life where he wouldn't pass so young, where he wasn't burdened with his own thoughts. A life where you can love one another, build the family you both dreamed of, and grow old together.

Oh, how he couldn't wait for that day.
đ đ đ đ đ
The day's events quickly caught up to you both as you surrendered into a deep, peaceful sleep.
đ đ đ đ đ

You both talk and play around in your room, both of you forgetting about the incident.
đ đ đ đ đ
Oh, how he couldn't wait for that day.
đ đ đ đ đ
The day's events quickly caught up to you both as you surrendered into a deep, peaceful sleep.
đ đ đ đ đ
On days you craved his touch, you spray his cologne on one of his shirts and wear it to sleep. When you need his advice, you visit his grave and talk to him, telling him everything you cannot say to anyone else. When you walk through a store and see something he would like, you buy it and place it on your shelf. On his birthday you buy a little cupcake and spend the evening with him at his grave. When guys try to hit on you, you show them your ring and tell them you are married.
So as I am working on pt 2 of In Every Life I decided to give a little snippet of the chapter. Part 1 here. Oh also tag list is open for anyone who wants to join! I promise I will try and finish this chapter this week!
"Maybe thats because I am admiring you.." You say softly closing your eyes taking a deep breath to calm yourself. This was the perfect opportunity to confess. If you didn't do it now, you never will.

Smack. You turn around quickly, appalled, your hands going behind to your ass. There stand a group of guys snickering. You were minding your own business, talking with your friends in the hallway, when all of a sudden you felt a sharp sting on your ass. âWhat the hell!â you yelled at the guys.
The always busy hallway went still, everyone staring to see how this situation will pan out. Your eyebrows scrunched in frustration, eyes darting around as you felt the stares of your fellow classmates. Your hands gripped your skirt, trying to pull it down to save yourself from further humiliation.
Jake was on the other side of the hallway. He had a clear view of how this situation played out. He saw the guys snickering as they dared their friend to slap your ass.
He found the actions disgusting. No respecting man would ever harass a young woman. He wanted to help..to speak out. But what can he do. He was a useless guy in a wheelchair. He looked down at his legs in frustration, eyebrows furrowed, fingers gripping the arms of his wheelchair. He made up his mind.
âYouâre upset for no reason, all I did was give you a lilâ tap.â The guy smirked, completely proud of his actions.
âThis is sexual harassment, you had no right to touch me.â You spit out angrily at the guy. The audacity, the nerve, for him to think his actions were okay.
âWoah woahâsexual harassment, ainât ya over reacting swee-â He didnât even finish his sentence, when he was rammed into from behind. The guy stumbled forward, stunned, arms flailing as he fell on the floor. Everyone burst out into bubbles of laughter, pointing at him.
âYou okay?â Jake asked looking up into your stunned eyes.
You couldnât exactly process what just happened. This entire situation was moving too fast for your brain to comprehend. You nod wordlessly, looking at Jake in confusion and gratitude. âAhâŠyesâŠum thank you Jakeâ
âHey no problemâ Jake looked down at the guy trying to get up. He quickly took my hand and pulled me along with him. He weaved us through the hallway to an empty quiet corner away from everyone.
âWait wait, where are we going?â You donât stop his from pulling you. You looked at where your hands are connected. His hands were warm, had a firm grip on your hand. His hand was bigger than yours, envelopes it completely. Surprisingly, you didnât mind. It wasâŠnice..comforting after that ordeal. Your eyes slowly trailed back up to his face.
âThought you would wanna get away before he opens his squeaky mouth.â He joked with a slight smirk. Jake was trying to ease the tension, his thumb unconsciously rubbing small circles on the back of your hand. His head was tilted slightly, blue eyes staring into your own.
You couldnât help but let out a small laugh. Your shoulders drop, relieved that the situation was truly over.
Jakeâs ears twitched at the sound of your laughter. A lopsided grin replaced his smirk. His eyes shining as they take in your features. He admired the little dimples that only show when you smile. The slight scrunch in your nose. The way your eyes always close a little when you laugh.
Jake knew who you were. How couldnât he. You both share a number of classes together. He has seen you in classes helping everyone out. Someone needed help, no matter what it was you would help. Within reason of course.
You were also smart, always had your assignments done on time. However he noticed you never liked to answer questions in front of everyone. When the teacher asked a question, you never raise your hand to answer. Even though he knew you knew the answer.
Jake snapped out of his thoughts when he noticed something. âYou know my name.â Jake looked up at you, his mouth slightly open from surprise. Because of his wheelchair, he felt invisible. No one notices him, and if they did itâs because they felt pity. Most people donât even know his name unless the teachers forced others to work with him.
Your eyebrows scrunched in slight confusion. Your mouth dropping to a slight frown. âWhy wouldnât I know your name? We share almost all our classes together.â
Jake shook his head, looking down in his lap. His smile soft and genuineâŠalmost grateful, relieved? Of course you out of everyone would remember his name. That is just the type of person you are. He felt crazy for even thinking that you would never notice him. âYeah youâre rightâŠI guess I didnât expect it. Since we havenât talked before.â
Ding.Ding. The bell ring echoed loudly through the hallways.
âOh class is about to start. I guess I will see you around then. Thank you again.â You wave at him with a small smile before you start walking to class, not waiting for his response.
Jake watched you leave until you were out of his sight. He wheeled himself to his class, feeling lighter than before.
đ đ đ đ đ
The next morning, you headed to your first class, biology. You were carrying a cool can energy drink. When you enter your class, your eyes sweep over the tables, looking for one person specifically. There he was, in the back of the class sitting in his wheelchair. Earphones in, head down looking at his phone.
You smiled immediately, although you tried to hide it. You quickly walk over to him, a slight spring in your step. You place the energy drink on the table in front of him.
Jake looked up from his phone, startled when he felt the movement. His eyes met your smile and he quickly took out his earbuds, smile matching yours. âWell good morning to you too. Whatâs this for?â He tilted his head up and slightly to the side.
You put your hands behind you, leaning slightly on the table. âItâs a thank you gift. For yesterday. I noticed you always drink this stuff.â You clarify. While yes it was a thank you giftâŠin truth you just wanted an excuse to talk to him. Not that he needed to know that.
âYou didnât have to..but thank youâ He took the can grinning, placing it in his bag. He felt his heart beating slightly faster. He was giddy, nothing can remove his smile today. Not only did you know his name, but you also know what his preferred drink was. He was beyond elated.
You shift slightly from side to side. âUmâŠcan I be your partner today in class?â You felt embarrassed. You didnât know why you were nervous. Maybe itâs because you felt like his gaze was always looking into your soul.
Jake was taken aback. He usually worked alone, no one really asked to be his partner. He quickly fixed his expression, keeping the same smile. He could tell you were nervous.
He grinned mischievously. You looked too cute all nervous. He couldnât pass this opportunity up. âOfâcourse you can Princess.â The nickname slipped out of his tongue so naturally. Like he was meant to call you that.
Your cheeks flushed at the nickname. You have been called many sweet names before, but the way he said it felt different. The name went straight into your stomach, butterflies fluttering around.
You quickly sit down in the seat next to him. You werenât sure if you should address it or leave it be. You take a couple of deep breaths to calm down.
Jake was proud seeing your reaction. He felt accomplished knowing that HE was the one who made you blush. âYou okay, Princess? You look a little flushedâ He couldnât help but tease with mock concern.
You narrow your eyes, sending him a playful glare. âI am fineâŠit is just hot today.â
Jake nodded his head, going along. âMhm yeah itâs very hot today.â He sent you a sneaky wink. âMake sure to stay hydrated, Princess.â
Before you could respond, the teacher came in and started class. You saw your friends walk in surprised to see you sitting with Jake. One of your friends giggled in your direction before sitting in their spots.
As the class went by, you focused on the teacherâs lesson; occasionally sneakily glancing at JakeâŠnot so subtly. Jake could feel your glances yet pretended he did not notice.
At the end of class, your teacher assigned a project to be done with your table partner. This project would have to be done outside of school.
Jake leaned back in his chair, arms folded with that signature grin of his. âGuess that means we are partners, Princess.â He couldnât believe his luck. He went from never talking to you once, to now working on a project together. All in a span of a day.
âGuess so pretty boyâ You smiled back at him.
He raised his eyebrow, âpretty boy?â
âYeah pretty boy. It suits you.â You shrugged your shoulders. âPlus if you call me princess, itâs only fair I call you pretty boy.â
Jake let out a laugh. He has never been called a pretty boy before. He liked it, especially when it comes out from your mouth. âAlright iâll take it, Princess.â
You smiled proudly, cheeks flushed. âOh for the project hereâ You write down your phone number on a paper and hand it to him. âSo we can keep in touch.â
Jake picked up the paper, staring at, as if he was filing it away in his memory. âIâll text you when Iâm free then.â
You start to pack up your stuff. âI will be awaiting your text.â You smiled at him.
Jake packed up his stuff, stuffing your phone number into his pocket. âIâll walk you to your next class Princess, itâs only the gentleman thing to doâ He looked up at grinning with a look that said he wasnât taking no for an answer.
You shake your head letting a small laugh out. You did not argue with him. Instead you accepted his offer. âIf you insistâ
You fall into step with his wheelchair as you left the classroom and headed to your next class.
đ đ đ đ đ
A couple days went by with you and Jake texting. You have gotten closer and even learned some new things about him.
You learned he had a twin brother who passed away when they were ten. He doesnât have many friends but he loves nature. He said he prefers quietness of the outdoors instead of crowded noisy places.
You also learned that he wasnât born paralyzed. He was in a car accident when he was ten. That is when he lost his brother and his legs.
You both agreed that Jake would come over to your house today in the afternoon to do the biology project.
You woke up early, rummaging through your closet to find the perfect outfit. You couldnât just wear anything, this was Jakeâs first time coming over. You had to pick the perfect outfit.
You settled on navy denim ankle length skirt, and a long sleeve loose blouse. The blouse was white and had an old blue porcelain pattern on it. It had three bows down the middle, with a gentle V neckline. You put your hair into a french twist bun.
You went downstairs and was greeted with the sight of mother making breakfast. Your father was setting the table. âMorning mom, dad.â
Your father looked up first smiling at you, âGood morning sweetie.â
Your mother finished platting the eggs and turned to face you. âGood morning sweetheart.â She paused and took in your outfit, raising her eyebrow. âWhat are you all dolled up for?â
âI just felt like itâ You shrugged and took a seat at the table.
âShe has a date.â Your brother, Oscar, said teasingly as he passed you for his seat.
âIt is not a date! Jake is coming over for a school project.â You explained to them, with your cheeks and the tip of your ears flushed red.
Your parents shared knowing look across the table. You ignored them and finished your breakfast. Thankfully your parents and brother have work and wonât be back until dinner. You wonât have to deal with their teasing and side comments any longer.
The moment your family left you immediately jump to cleaning the house. You set up the living room for you and Jake to use; fluffing the pillows, rolling the couch with a lint roller, wiping down the coffee table, dusting all surfaces. You made sure it was spotless, not a speck of dust to be seen.
You made sure there was a space for Jakeâs wheelchair near the table. Then you arranged cups, snacks, and drinks on a side table in the living room. You made sure they were all accessible to Jake.
Last thing you did was cleaning the bathroom. You couldnât have it be dirty and smelly.
At around one pm, Jake appeared, knocking on the door. You quickly open the door with a smile. âHiâŠalmost thought you got lost.â You teased, stepping to the side and letting him come in.
Jake was wearing a plain black fitting shirt, with some basic cut jeans. His hair was groomed back and he was wearing that same adorable grin that you have come to love.
He rolled himself into the house. âHey princess, it wasnât my fault all the houses look the same. Thankfully only one house has a beautiful girl waiting for me.â He shamelessly flirted even though he just arrived.
You rolled your eyes playfully. During your texts you got used to his sweet flirty words. You closed the door behind him, locking it. âAlways a sweet talker.â You say playfully leading him to the living room.
You give Jake a quick tour of your house. He wasnât paying much attention. He has his eyes trained on your back, admiring the lovely view he has. His eyes wander up and down your form as you walk. Taking in the way you hold yourself. âCute outfit princess, suits you.â He says grinning, tilting his head to the side.
You blush pleased by his compliment. âThank youâŠum anyway we will work on the project in the living roomâ You lead him to the living room.
As you both work on the project, Jake occasionally focused more on your face than the work. He noticed the way you bite your lip when you focus. How your eyebrows scrunch up when you reach a complicated task. The way you patiently explain and answer any questions he has.
Jake wasnât the smartest person when it came to books. Others he worked with would use a condescending tone whenever he asked about a topic he didnât know. But you donât. You donât mind his endless questions, even if they repeat. You happily break down the explanations in ways he understands.
He appreciates it more than he expected. You treat him like a regular person and he never noticed how much he yearned for that. You didnât care about his legs, you didnât care about his âslowâ mind. All you saw was himâŠyou saw Jake. That was the first time he has seen anyone truly see him.
Time flew by quickly and soon it was evening. The sun was beginning to set and you both finally finished the project. Jakeâs mother was picking him up. âThank you for having me over princess. Iâll text you laterâ He sent you a wink, and waved to you as you watched the car drive away.
You spend your time cleaning up and making dinner for your family. Your parents arrived shortly after, and you all eat dinner together. While your dad does cleans the dishes, you were in deep thought.
If Jake was going to come over more, you wanted privacy; not just both of you in the living room. The only problem was your bedroom was upstairs, and there was no way to allow Jake to get up the stairs.
You frowned frustrated at the thought. You really wanted to spend private time in your room. Your face lights up with an idea. You turn to your parents, âDad, Mom can I move my room to the guest room downstairs?â
Your Dad was the first to answer you. âWhy do you want to change your room honey?â He asked a little surprised, you have never shown interest in changing rooms before.
You shrugged, âI just wanted toâŠand if Jake comes over moreâŠI want him to be able to go to my room.â
Your mother smiles proudly, she raised you and your brother to always consider others. âThat sounds like a great idea, ofc you can move your room. Do you need help getting your furniture down?â
Your eyes light up in relief, a big smile painting your face. âReally? Yes I would love your help!â
Your father chuckles from the sink at your obvious excitement. âWe can all help you tomorrow, redecorate your room. Maybe go buy you some new furniture.â
You were beyond elated. You couldnât wait to show Jake your new room. All the new moments you will have together. You were excited for the future and what it holds.
Pairing: human/avatar Jake Sully x fem human reader
Summary: (of entire series) Being high school sweethearts with Jake was wonderful. Your relationship was everything you could dream of; soft, romantic, playful..You two were soulmates and everyone knew it. You already planned your future together, and everything was going perfectly until Jake died. Years passed and you never moved on. One day you were in a car accident that woke you up in a strange world. You found Jake once more..except he didnât remember you, and you did not know who he was.
Authors Note: This may be terrible but at least I didnât use AI. So I realized that this will move a little slow in the beginning. The first couple of parts will focus on the reader and Jakeâs life on earth. From how they met, to dating and finally Jakeâs death. It will focus on their dynamic and development. I will try to make it just two parts on earth, and the rest will be on Pandora. Also this is my first ever fanfic so please be kind!
Warnings: fluff, flirting, pinning, soft Jake, fem human reader, slight sexual harassment (not from Jake), little bit of angst? brief mention of death.

Hii everyone welcome!! I have been reading a bunch of Avatar fics and man is everyone so talented! đ« I want to write some as wellâŠI have actually never written a fanfic before but I have such a great series ideaâŠI got inspired by @junebugonjupiter and many other fantastic authors on here!
It will be a Jake Sully x female human reader. Itâs a love in every timeline/universe type of trope. The reader and Jake will be in high school together in the modern age (2025) in the US and then Jake dies and the reader never gets over him. Fast forward the reader gets hit with a car and thrown into the ocean and wakes on Pandora. The setting will be avatar way of the water with some things changed. Like they just moved and Neytiri and Jake had that argument they had in Fire and Ash. They got divorced (idk if thatâs possible but thatâs what happened). Neteyam will be alive. They find the reader when they were swimming. Jake wonât remember her, and she doesnât know thatâs it her Jake. The story will be them falling in love againâŠlet me know what you guys think! I could also do requests!
