I reblogged one of these but this one is even better.
Here’s your reminder that the US doesn’t have an official language.
This is such a fascinating concept that writers can apply to their world-building.
This is also an interesting look at which immigrant groups settled where

i still can’t believe that the incredibles is likely set in the 1960s
the entire film is designed with classic 50s-60s art styles, a lot of the interior design of the parr household is in 60s style, fashion is generally reminiscent of the 60s, in the beginning of the film all the photographs and video are grainy and shot in 60s style, the technology in bob’s office is very dated, when edna is going on her “no capes” rant she cites superheroes who died from cape designs and says their deaths were in the 50s, all the cars in the film have 60s models, any advanced tech we really see is seemingly kept secret from the general public, here’s a newspaper from the film:

Holy fuck
its really funny how like, pikachu has been the obvious moneymaker for pokemon throughout its history, and they’ve tried to replicate this without success ever since. trying each gen to hit on that perfect mascot formula
and finally after a series of unsuccessful and generally unmemorable clumsy pikachu ripoffs, nintendo comes out with a pokemon… whose entire concept is boldfacedly, ‘clumsy pikachu ripoff’
and everyone fucking loves it
back in my day the reblog button was on the top. we had to scroll 15 miles through the snow, uphill both ways.
Don’t trust morning you. Morning you is a dick. Morning you would sell your loved ones if it got them 5 minutes of extra sleep
maybe morning me wouldn’t be such a dick if that flaky bitch evening me had gone to bed instead of tumblring til butts oclock int he morning
Well evening me might have fallen asleep at a reasonable hour if that dumbass afternoon me hadn’t lain down for a “little nap” that lasted four hours.
i really hate the whole “we’re not trying to take YOUR guns away! we just want stricter back ground checks and education!” thing bc like……wrong! i AM trying to take your guns away! me! i want them gone!! take them all!!! bye-bye guns! can’t shoot em if ya don’t have em!!!!!
Logging in to facebook today has been a lesson in finding out which members of your friends and family care more about imagined threats to their personal liberties, than the actual threat of gunmen walking into schools and murdering children.
And before any of y’all attempt to start shit, I’m not in the fucking mood to spoon feed you common sense and decency today, so don’t.
I grew up in a country with gun control. It was a measure put into place a year after a man armed with two pistols and two revolvers walked in to a village primary school much like my own, and murdered 15 children all under the age of ten at point blank range before eventually turning the gun on himself. It was a national tragedy, the likes of which has not been repeated since 1996 in UK because we had immediate and effective gun control. So yes, it works.
You can argue with me all you fucking like about how “criminals will always get their hands on weapons” but here’s the thing I can also tell you from experience, cause yea, I also grew up in an area rife with crime and murder too (Glasgow, the only city to be voted both the friendliest and the murder capitol of Europe, within the same year. Brilliant.) most criminals? Dinnae think about walking into schools and shooting up bairns. They want weapons to use against other criminals and occasionally the law enforcement. And we might still have a lot of problems involving knife crime, but it’s a lot harder to stab 20 people in under 5 minutes than it is so just walk into a room full of unarmed innocents and open fire.
So your argument that there’s no point to trying to limit access to weaponry, doesnae actually mean heehaw. It’s just your way of saying you dinnae give a shit about other people and the death of 17 children is an acceptable outcome for your sense of personal liberty.
If you truly are a responsible gun owner, as so many people claim in their defense of owning one, then you must also acknowledge that there is a much deeper problem in America at the moment that so many people who are not, are able to get their hands on them.
Just because you’re not actively part of the problem, isn’t enough. Not anymore. It never was.
Iconic seafarer beards became a trend to scare away pesky mermaids.
Mermaid, seeing a bald pirate: Zero threat…! Mermaid, seeing a hairy, bearded pirate: If I get too close their face tentacles will eat me…!
Most mermaids only grow short beards as not to scare baby mermaids (longer beards look like the tentacled mouths of hungry squids and octopuses).
Pirates use this innate fear to their advantage to protect themselves from mermaids, hence the iconic beards and hat:
I like how this is presented as factual information
I actually figured that a mermaid’s hair was an extremely specialized first dorsal fin.
If you look at the structure of a fin, it actually separates into sections. In some fish, these sections can get extra long, in the form of stiff spines or soft, flexible rays. You can see this most prominently in species like the lionfish:
It’s entirely possible that these structures could become longer and thinner over time and come to resemble a human hair, at least from a distance.
This opens up interesting possibilities such as:
Poisonous hair
Flaring out the hair-spines to scare off predators
Mating displays involving aggressive hair flipping
A period in mermaid history where mohawks were all the rage
A male colleague was making fun of the #metoo movement a few days ago, and many more (I’m one of 5 women in a department of 200 men) joined in. So I raised my voice and said I was glad women were speaking up about sexual harassment and assault and that I hoped that everyone who perpetuated this toxic behavior got taken down.
“Yeah but it’s a trend now, lots of them are just saying it for their 15 minutes of fame.” He then continued to say that he didn’t know anyone who had been harassed or any man who had done it.
I asked him if he had a daughter. He did. I asked him how old she was. She was was 17. I told him I’d bet my rent money that his daughter had experienced sexual harassment.
“That’s impossible.”
“Did you ask her?”
“No.”
“Well then, do it.”
The next day, he came in the office with five bouquets of flowers for all the women in our department, including me. He publicly apologized for making fun of sexual harassment and for making our lives harder by doing so. He said that he simply hadn’t known how widespread it was. Apparently, his daughter deals with it very regularly. She hadn’t told him because of the way he spoke about assault cases that were on the news. She thought he’d think less of her if she’d mention it. It was her idea that he should make a public announcement. He said he felt like a bad father.
I said: “You were. Same goes for everyone who laughed with you. Be better, now you know better. And educate other men that still think the same way you did yesterday. And next time someone tells you about an experience they have, don’t automatically assume that because you haven’t seen it, it’s not true. That kind of willful ignorance is why we still deal with this shit.”
He also offered to pay my rent as that was part of the bet, but I told him I’d rather have him put effort in being a person his daughter and wife could be proud of.
In conversation the other day my mom stopped and asked my dad about what percentage of women he thought had experienced sexual harassment. He said about 20-30% maybe. My mom told him that both of us had been harassed multiple times at work (same goes for both of her sisters) and that she had actually been assaulted by a groper on a public bus. I have never seen anyone’s face go slack so quickly before as he realized that literally every woman in his family had experienced this. And while I’m glad he believed us and has changed his view on that subject I still can’t shake the frustration, the anger, that it required being sat down and spoonfed these incidents that we didn’t particularly wanted to relive. This is something that women have been saying for years, but men just never listen. Not even when they’re forced to sit in mandatory harassment in the workplace training seminars.
