Three years ago on this date, I stepped foot at the South Pole (in brand new all-white Fila F-13s).
On 5/23/14 I met Werner Herzog in the lobby of The Silent Movie Theater in Los Angeles. He was in attendance for a Cinefamily screening of his 1971 film Fata Morgana. The story begins like this. I met my friend Tom outside the theater. In the five seconds I had my back turned to Tom while entering the lobby, he magically turned into Werner Herzog. I spun around and my conversation with Herzog had started before I knew what had happened. After shaking his hand, I told him that I had been to the South Pole. He asked me what I did there. I told him I had been the breakfast cook. I mentioned the Ice tunnels and his face lit up with a smile. He was fully present, filled with curiosity. He was soon whisked away to do the intro. My heart was beating fast. During his intro he spoke on the making of Fata Morgana, his childhood, and of cannibalism. And then he mentioned having just met me in the lobby. I melted in my seat. Now, in this moment, I knew that I existed in my great hero's mind as a memory.
Thankfully, my friend Melina, who volunteers at Cinefamily, taped the intro and captured this extraordinary moment in my life.
PS He had forgotten about the Ice tunnels! To think that in a life as extraordinary as his has been, a place as surreal as the tunnels is just another passing memory.
South America, mark your calendars! DJ Douggpound, Andre Hyland and I are coming to you on tour!!! 💧🇺🇸💧🇺🇸💧🇺🇸

Progress ain't just a river in Egypt. Very excited to be playing these shows in NYC next week.
Did 2 things today for the first time in my life: rode a horse bareback And met Werner Herzog. We talked about the Ice tunnels beneath the South Pole.
