Basic Knowledges of Northeast China(1)
Northeast China is really large. The area of it is about 800 thousand square kilometers and the total population is about 110 million . There are three provinces in it, Chinese people call them Three Provinces of Northeast . All of them are borders.: Heilongjiang Province is in the north and borders on Far eastern Federal District of Russia; Jilin Province is in the middle of Northeast and borders on two countries-Russia and North Korea; Liaoning Province is located in the south of Northeast and is only one coastal province of Northeast China, and borders on the North Korea. There are 4 boundary rivers in the area. Heilongjiang River, Ussuri River , Tumen River and Yalu River. Heilongjiang River is the longest and largest river in the Northeast , the literal translation of the river is black dragon river .Russian people call it Amur River.It’s the third longest river in China , The length of it is 4440 kilometers.the upstream and the midstream of the river is border between two.the length of the border is 2854 kilometers.the area of the eastern bank of the river belongs to Russia, China owns the western bank of the river. So you know the downstream of the river completely belongs to Russia. Finally ,the river flow into Okhotsk Sea in Russia .Ussuri River ,which is the a tributary of Heilongjiang River,is the border between China and Russia. The length of it is 909 kilometers .Tumen River and Yalu River are the borders between North Korea and China, and the both rise in the Changbai Mountain. The length of Tumen River is 525 kilometers and the length of Yalu River is 795 kilometers . Yalu River is really a special river in Chinese contemporary history. In October 25th 1950, Chinese People’s Volunteer Army crossed the river and went into North Korea . For only one reason:resist the U.S. ,help North Korea . Certainly, you know the result of the war, China and North Korea were the winners. At present, there are 5 international bridges above the river. All of them are the connections between China and North Korea . Showing the kindness and friendship between two . Songhua River is the main tributary of Heilongjiang River .the length of it is 1927 kilometers .Harbin, which is the provincial capital of Heilongjiang Province , is located in the northern bank of the river. Jilin City, which is the second biggest city of Jilin Province, is also near of the river. Nen River is the main tributary of Songhua River, the length of it is 1370 kilometers .Qiqihar,which is the second biggest city of Heilongjiang Province, is near of the Nen River. Liao River is also an important river and located in the south of Northeast. The length of Liao River is 1345 kilometers .Liaoyang City, which is the oldest city of Northeast , is located in the northern bank of the Liao River. There are some lakes in Northeast China. One of them is Khanka Lake , which is located in the southeast of Heilongjiang Province. It’s an international lake between China and Russia,its area is 4380 square kilometers .China owns the northern parts , it accounts for one-third of the lake; Russia owns the southern parts, it accounts for two-thirds of the lake. Another famous lake is Songhua Lake. It’s located in the north central area of Jilin Province and really near of Jilin City. That’s a part of upstream of Songhua River. Its area is 554 square kilometers.Especially, it’s a artificial lake, it was built by Japanese in 1937. Initially, it was the reservoir of a power plant. At present, the power plant is still used and near of the lake. It’s named Fengman Power Plant. There are also some mountains in Northeast China,Greater Khingan Range is the second biggest mountain in Northeast, the northern extremity of it is located in the northeast of Heilongjiang Province and the southern extremity of it is located in the northeast of Inner Mongolia, the length of it is about 1200 kilometers , the highest elevation of it is 2029 meters and the lowest elevation of it is 180 meters. It’s famous as a big forestry industrial base, because it has lots of primary forests. Lesser Khingan Range is located in the north central of Heilongjiang Province,the length of it is about 500 kilometers .the highest elevation of it is 1429 meters. it’s also famous for the primary forests. It has two big national forest parks. Changbai Mountains is the biggest range in the Northeast China, the length of it is about 1300 kilometers . The highest elevation of it is 2750 meters. That’s a volcanic mountain range between Jilin Province and North Korea. And it’s also a sacred mountain of Manchuria mythology. Yiwulv Mountain is also famous. It’s located in the southwest of Liaoning Province, exactly, it’s in the Beizhen City,which is a county level city of Jinzhou City. It’s not big, the highest elevation of it is 866.6 meters. It’s a sacred mountain of Taoism. It’s a place for religious activities of confucianism, buddhism and taoism. There are many temples on the mountain. It’s really cold in Northeast China. The average frost-free period of Northeast is about 150 days,since May to October every year. Mohe County ,which is in the north of Heilongjiang Province, is the coldest place in China. The lowest temperature of it was 52.3 degrees centigrade below zero in 1969. Usually, the temperature of Mohe in winter is under 30 degrees centigrade below zero every year. Although it’s so cold in Northeast, it’s also a really important agricultural region in China. The rice from Northeast is very popular in China. It also produces plenty of soybeans and sorghums . Cause of the rich black earth and many big rivers.
