This was a collab doujin between me and YY Studio where we both wrote and drew a story for Ryoma and Xander respectively before fCorrin had to choose which family she would join (Conquest or Birthright).

I drew Ryoma’s side and I will update it irregularly for people to read until preorders end by this month. Xander’s story is exclusive to the printed book only.

#vulnerableanimalsweek2021 Day 6 - South America/Camouflage So many animals to choose from but I picked the giant river otter. I have always struggled at drawing otters so I really gave this one all I got. Otters are such fun creatures and giant river otters are just really neat.

Giant otters live in South America, throughout the Orinoco, Amazon and La Plata River systems. They are typically 1,5-1,8 metres long and weigh around 22-32kg. Their fur is a dark brown with a white/beige patch that extends from its jaw line to its chest. This patch is unique on each animal and serves as a digital mark to identify individuals between them. It doesn’t have natural predators but does compete with other species over prey.

The giant otter faces the same threats as many other South American species, mostly deforestation. Fur trade, gold mining using mercury and conflicts with fishermen are also threatening this critically endangered species. Though most remaining subpopulations are fragmented and disconnected, there are important subpopulations still thriving in the Amazon, which should be prioritized for conservation. Given bleak outlook, captive breeding programs will be important to long-term survival of the species.
