Influenza A
My ICU has been overtaken with patients in their 40s and younger on ventilators because of the flu this year. People with other comorbidities. Has anyone else had this happen? It’s troubling to see how sick these people are getting. It’s much scarier taking care of someone my age or younger than someone in their 70s. I think it’s the thought of young children at home or life that has yet to be lived.
We are a small hospital and small ICU. But pretty much every flu patient we have gotten has ended up vented. There have been more younger ones that usual and then the older ones have all been unable to wean and died.
When I read this I think of all the people who didn’t get flu shots because they “got sick last year” and want to show this to them. You did not get the flu from the flu shot. Your body was building an immunity reaction so shit like this doesn’t happen.
Respiratory therapist, have also seen this over the last couple of weeks, 30-40 year olds flu + about to get trached because we can’t wean them.
We have 2 40 year olds that will be getting a trach this week. It’s awful.
This scares me so much, especially considering how many people I know that wouldn’t listen to me and get their flu shot this year. It’ll be interesting to see how many we have on step down Thursday.
We have quite a few flu patients under 40 too, all vented. Our ICU is being taken over by vented influenza and pneumonia patients.
