I work retail, so I won’t be replying immediately all of the time. I usually try to do them as I see them, but sometimes I am busy. If I’ve liked it, that means I’ve seen it, at the very least. :>

Length does not mean anything to me. I can go on a while sometimes, and I don’t mind if you do or don’t, either.

I do horror, gore, dark themes, sexual themes, etc. Not Safe For Work, in other words. It’ll all be tagged.

Ryou Bakura is in possession of the Millennium Ring. Unfortunately, the same is true in reverse - he is facing his own possession. The spirit of the ring has taken his body as a vessel and inhabits his consciousness on and off, whenever it feels like.

He is doing his best to live the average life of a student - university is hard enough as it is. Harder still when you miss half your classes because you weren’t in control of your body. Still, his outlook is generally positive.

He has an interest in the occult and dark things, and enjoys gaming in multiple forms. His current favorite is Dungeons & Dragons. He’s doesn’t do a lot of dueling these days, but can still hold his own.

This muse is both Ryou and Dark Bakura. You may experience either at any time.

The other guy didn’t even budge at his approach. Maybe it should have been a concern, but Keith had to give internal props for that. More importantly, it seemed to work in his favour anyway… well, sort of. At least they were getting somewhere now.

Keith waved off the idea of a game. “No, forget that. You said an ally?”

It wasn’t anything less suspicious, in fact it was even more so, but at least it was something. He mulled over possibilities in his head- the request was too vague to be legal, but a friend of Jounouchi’s was definitely too lame to be in a gang or something like that. So, what… shoplifting? A fucking nerd way of asking for weed?

“I’m not gonna agree if you don’t tell me what you actually want,” he finally said after a moment. Not that he actually intended to agree anyways, too many red flags for his taste, but he still wanted to hear it for himself. It was the least this fucking guy could do after holding him up like this.

He’s not surprised when Keith says that he’s not interested in a game. Very few people are, these days. It’s a bit of a shame, really. But it definitely speeds up this next part of the process.

He gives a nod.

“Nothing particularly tricky. Just some artifacts that have managed to escape their confines.”

Things would’ve been a hell of a lot easier if the other Millennium Items had just remained in that hole in Egypt. He could’ve gotten a plane ticket through his host and flown over to go collect them. Instead, several have escaped back into the world. Lucky for him, they ended up in the same country he did.

“I know where two of them are. And to be honest, they aren’t particularly hard to get. The people that have them are just... familiar with my work... Which is why I need someone they won’t see coming.”

He sighs, setting the dice down on the shelf next to him with a hard thunk. He supposes he could ask any crusty-looking stranger on the street and they might do it if he offered enough money. But it is far, far, more fun to use a familiar yet unexpected face.

“A gold rod and a pendant, both in the possession of civilians.”

When he wakes, he is in pain.

His eye hurts. It feels as if he's just taken a train straight to the face, like a vegetable peeler has been run over his skin. Like he's been stabbed.

He keeps his eyes closed for a moment, trying to push past what appears to be his worst headache in a long while.

When he opens them, though, he finds that he can only see out of one. The right half of his field of vision remains black. For a second, he panics. He presses a hand to his face and instead of skin, his fingertips find gauze.

Oh, right.

With some effort, he manages to sit up. It's now that he realizes there is a weight on his legs, and that this weight comes from a blanket and... his former host.

He's been laid out on their couch to recouperate. Ryou, currently asleep, is draped half over him - having sat himself on the floor to keep an eye on the former spirit, it seems.

Bakura feels something in his chest twist, and he sighs heavily.

He takes a second to rearrange the boy - he's a man now, though, isn't he - so as to make this next part a little easier. The former spirit slips himself out from under Ryou's limbs and shakily gets to his feet. When the floor begins to feel solid under him again, he picks up the other as gently as he can manage and places him on the cushions.

Then he heads for the bathroom.

When he opens the door, he's greeted by a large, now-dried puddle of red. The smeared mirror shows him that it's about time to change his dressings. He must've been out for a while.

His reflection looks... tired. A little more than he feels. He'll have to get some sort of sustenance soon. Still getting used to that.

For now, he steps forward to start digging through the cabinet. They don't have much in the way of cleaning supplies, but he'll make do.

With a general disregard for the recommended protective equipment and a bottle of bleach, he gets to work.

Marik pulled his hands away from the other feeling a large amount of victory.

Marik nodded. “Let’s pick out your books then, I would not mind giving the information a read myself. Then we can continue the hunt for knowledge.”

He sighed feeling rather content. His eyes shut for only a moment. “Its really nice to have a friend again.”

He opened his eyes back up. “Alright.” He picked up his book. “Where is the magic ritual section~? I am unfamiliar.” He said in a teasing tone.

It’s really nice to have a friend again.

Ryou feels the sentiment profoundly as they begin to wander through the library. He shows Marik where his favorite section on the occult is - where he finds most of the books that he checks out, save for the occasional cookbook or light novel. He’s gone through most of the shelves here, and has even special ordered some from other branches on occasion. The employees behind the counter are always a little uncomfortable when he asks, but he’s so polite that they manage to muddle through it anyway.

When he finishes picking up what they need, they saunter out of the building with a little more literature than he entered with. If they can’t get any answers out of Yugi, these should at least be a little helpful in the interim until they can figure out what’s going on.

It’s Ryou that suggests they should hit up a cafe before going home. He craves something sweet, something that allows him to physically feel the elation that he currently feels at the situation. For the first time in a while, he feels hope. He has one of his closest friends back in his life, he has a loose plan for what he’s going to do next. He could, possibly, be free of the entity that has haunted him for years. At least... in body.

So they roll up to the place near his house with the nice cream puffs, and he orders two - both for him, though he really shouldn’t - and a nice rooibos tea, since he hasn’t tried it yet.

When they sit down at a corner table, he pulls out his cellphone. As he looks at the contact that he’s pulled up, he feels a pang of anxiety. He hasn’t actually called this number in a while, though he has sent a few texts. He knows that it’s still good, but he feels like a bit of an ass for not being more... proactive in his friendship with the man on the other side.

Still, this is as good a reason as any to get back in touch. He hits the call button. When he hears the line click, he sucks in a breath.

“Hello, Yugi! It’s Ryou... do you have a moment to chat? I’m here with - um, Marik, actually, believe it or not - and we need your help with something.”

There was a very clear spark to Marik’s eyes. There was clear cunning intelligence there. He did seem to come to his senses, grabbing Ryou’s shoulders and speaking more hushed.

“Not hoping to get, getting hope. Hope that we all end up in our own vessels.”

It might be moments like this where some of Marik’s intelligence, and clear apt for schemes shines through as he starts connecting dots.

“The other night Seto mentioned to me that the Pharoah had been making fun of him, recently. He never elaborated but if we could talk to anyone Yugi is the only other helpful person I can think of.”

He tilts his head, smiling just so. “This has to be a topic that interests you, atleast a little, right?”

The very first thing that comes out of the blond’s mouth is confusing, but he manages to catch up after a moment. Oh.

He’s been looking for ways to separate the spirit from him physically without outright destroying the ring, and he’d not once thought of asking Yugi about it. To be fair, that had been before the knowledge bomb that Atem might actually be back.

“Of course! Some of the books I’m looking for are actually about that exact subject.”

Now he’s the one that needs to lower the volume. He covers his mouth instinctively, but leaves enough room to be heard.

“That’s a fantastic idea, actually. Even if he doesn’t have any insight himself, Atem might. “ He grins behind his hands. “We should at least give him a call.”

The other’s face reflects heat so easily. He gave a bit of a wry smile

“Sorry, that wasn’t intended to make you uncomfortable, just. Whatever the connection is… it just felt important to make sure you know it’s ok.”

His expression became silly. “Maybe if it was someone else, I would be upset if someone named my alter and started hanging out with him. But honestly there is very little you could do to upset me. You and Yugi could commit murder and I would just hide the body.”

He closed his eyes but after a second they popped open. There it was. A spark had lit the blaze on fire. He stood.

“Yugi, he might have an answer. I’m doing it, I’m thinking!”

He’s not exactly uncomfortable - he was just a bit unprepared for having to think about... that. He’s going to have to do some reflecting later. Right now, he tries to shove the train of thought out of his head. He nods to signal that he understands.

The mention of Yugi sparks a little surprise. They haven’t talked about him in quite some time. The sentiment is nice, though. He’s pretty sure he’d do the same for either of the other men, too. 

He takes a quick step back as Marik stands, trying to get out of the way.

“Hey, watch out!”

He’s quiet, but the blond isn’t. The outburst draws the attention of several nearby patrons, a couple of which give a loud hush sound. The others just look on disdainfully.

“Do you not think all the time?” Ryou asks, blinking a couple of times in confusion. “But - wait, what kind of answer are you hoping to get from Yugi?”

His eyes widened a moment. These were the kind of moments he was missing, something soft warm and genuine. His thief had done a good job the night before, but overall it was something Marik wanted to experience more of from friends.

He rested his forhead against the other man’s chest. He sighed, speaking softly. “You really are something else, you know that? How you put up with any of the three of us is a wonder to me…”

Some gears were trying to turn in his head. Ryou had named it, they had spent time together and both had been hiding it to some degree.

He moved one of his hands up to grab Ryou’s bicep, the other arm moving around the brit to return the hug.

“It was always genuine, you know? Wanting to be your friend. We share a lot in common, and your incredibly kind… I admire that about you. But… as you are unfortunately… incredibly aware of. I am stupid and also unfortunately fond of that aweful ugly little troll that lives inside the ring… I don’t understand why but he’s not always the same with me as he is with the others… my experience is not the same as everyone he’s tried to kill…”

He looked up at Ryou. “Do you understand what I am trying to tell you? You were not at battle city in the same way we were… and you’re not me… so… if your experience is different… and you find yourself fond of the other half of me… I want you to know that… it’s ok.”

The three of them. He’s never really thought about it, but he supposes that Marik, Karim, and Bakura are perhaps the people he might be closest to, despite the varying degrees of torment within those relationships. Two of them are his favorite people. The third... Well, he’s essentially all that Ryou had known for a long, long time.

He gives the other man a little, reassuring squeeze.

“I’m glad to be your friend, Marik.”

Of course he is aware that Marik’s experience with the spirit is different than any other. He doesn’t know what specifically about the man has drawn the entity to him. There are plenty of things to like, but... That’s a question for another day.

“You’re not stupid. That much is evidenced by the fact that you are aware of the situation.”

He can’t even blame the tomb keeper. The Millennium Ring’s ghost has done a million things to ruin his life and Ryou still has a hard time hating him.

At the next question, he has to stop and process. Is... he being given permission to continue his strange friendship with Karim? That’s got to be it, right?

Fond... the way Marik’s said it... Is he?

Ryou finds himself feeling a little flushed.

“I-” Oh, boy. “Uh, thank you?”

Any expression fell from the Egyptian’s face. Perhaps a hint of fear would slip through.

“You have a lot of faith thinking I have a plan.”

He rubbed the back of his head, a bitter huffed of a laugh escaping.

“It seems a bit hopeless doesn’t it? For the Pharoah to banish that part of myself, and yet my soul to still be so toxic it manifested it again? I just… want to get better. Maybe its time I actually look into therapy, I don’t know…”

He quickly scanned through everything he did know, and yet nothing quite fit what was right. “I don’t know… its hard to make a choice for something… that might be just as much Marik Ishtar as I am? And we haven’t talked… So I only know the moments, Karim has tried to erase me completely…”

This is about as much of a game plan as Ryou had expected, to be honest. If Marik has been ignoring the issue, it’d be safe to say he hadn’t been actively working on a solution for it.

He rises from his chair a little tentatively, and steps around the table to approach the blond. And he wraps his arms around the man’s shoulders.

“I don’t think that your soul is toxic. Everyone is capable of darkness and light. Some people go through things that make one a little more prevalent than the other, sure, but that doesn’t define them as a person.”

He gently lays his chin on the top of Marik’s head. He knows what it’s like to be on the receiving end of an evil double trying to destroy him.

“I don’t mind... being a go-between, if you need. It’s kind of hard to talk with someone when you can’t be awake at the same time.” He speaks softly. “And I can help you find someone if you want to try seeing a professional.”

Will that... get rid of Karim, actually? Ryou feels a spike of anxiety at the idea. But he can’t say anything. Technically, it would be a good thing... right?

It felt kind of… justified.

Oddly that was nice to hear for Marik. A soft smile formed on his face as he continued to drum his fingers.

“Well the spirit didn’t tell me, and… Karim?” He grimaced. “It didn’t get sloppy hiding it from me.”

He glanced up. “An unrelated party confronted me about my phones GPS and his satellite Surveillance system not having the same location for me. Kaiba keeps a pretty close watch on me since discovering I have the rod. And it was because of his stuff I knew we had been going to your home… I was… scared… for you at first… but…”

He pulled his arms back folding them over his chest. “Nothing bad had happened to you. And there had been a lot of care in me not knowing… I knew you still wanted space… weather you were hiding it for revenge, or you felt justified, or you just didn’t want to talk yet… didn’t and doesn’t matter. It felt easier to pretend nothing was happening at all. So I did.”

It.

He’s not sure why, but Marik calling Karim an it rubs Ryou the wrong way. He used to do the same for the spirit of the ring, sure, but he eventually fell out of the habit. He’s acknowledged that both beings have their own personalities and desires and goals... Though not in the most traditional sense, they are people.

He frowns, but doesn’t look up.

“Kaiba?”

Hm. That’s a little surprising. He supposes that it does make sense - the CEO has a tendency to overreach, and he’s a pretty adamant control freak. It’s been years since Ryou has seen him, though. He’s apparently been something of a recluse. At least he’s talking to someone.

“You know that ignoring problems isn’t the way to solve them.” Gray eyes finally turn up to view the blond. He quietly hopes that the man’s posture doesn’t indicate that he’s angry. “I appreciate your concern, though. Again, the worst he’s done is follow me around.”

A pause.

“What do you... plan to do?”

Ew, Ryou was thanking him for being honest. Marik didn’t deserve that level of understanding. It was a complete violation of Ryou’s body and right.

It would be so much easier if Ryou could just be mad, maybe even yell at him, then Marik would know exactly how to respond in kind. Like the sun scorching anything in it’s path, instead of like a fire having to sit in water.

Marik sat a bit dumb founded as Ryou admitted to his rendezvous.

He knew the base, but not all the details. He didn’t know it had a name now. He did not know how to feel about that at all.

“Oh…” He was silent for a long moment after he begun, drumming his fingers on the table. How to respond.

He sighed. “I already knew part of that.”

Wait, what?

“You knew-” Ryou flounders, pressing a palm to his forehead. “Which part!?”

He clears his throat, trying to bring his voice down a couple of octaves. Someone on the other side of the room glances up at him briefly with an annoyed expression before turning back to their novel.

“He’s, um. I know he was pretty terrible during the tournament, though I don’t remember much of it. Just little bits and pieces of it. But people say he was awful, so... But he’s... been fairly nice to me, actually.”

Oh, he shouldn’t be defending a fragmented part of someone’s personality - especially one that has a murderous streak. He returns to playing idly with the ring.

“I’m sorry for not telling you sooner, but we weren’t really speaking and I’m not going to lie, it felt kind of... justified?” He pauses, looking at the floor. “How did you find out?”

He was wondering if Ryou was also going to be honest about that has been happening. If so he should also respond… completely honestly.

Yes he would be honest and fess up to Ryou what has been happening in a completely genuine way.

When he looked up at the other tho, all he felt was the embarrassment crawl up his face. He covered his face with his hands swaying in his seat a second.

He recomposed himself, gently placing both hands on the table taking a deep breath.

“Yes. That would have been me.”

Marik’s response is enough of an answer on its own, really. Ryou feels his own face begin to flush, but he tries not to let the mortification get to him.

Nobody... has seen him like that. Nobody has seen his body like that. But now this man has... Even if he wasn’t the one piloting, it was his body. That’s so...  Oh, he’ll have to process that later. He can’t do it right now.

He sucks in a breath of his own and powers through.

“Okay. Thank you for being honest.”

He’s not sure what else to say about it. Hope you had a good time? Ew. He’s honestly just glad it was with someone he actually knows and not a complete stranger.

“Now that this mystery has been solved - the thing that I have to tell you...” He pauses, gripping the gold artifact a little harder. He’s really going to do this, as daunting a task as it is. Words begin to spew out of his mouth before he can stop them. “Okay, um. Your dark half that had participated in Battle City is back and he was stalking me for a little bit. And then we, um... He started talking to me and I gave him a name - his name is Karim, by the way... And I think we’re... friends?”

He takes a brief breather.

“We’ve only met up a few times, and he’s been pretty adamant about not letting you know he’s here, but I figured since it was your body that you might want to know.”

He perks up when he hears the soft voice. It feels like forever since he’s heard Ryou’s voice. For a moment he feels an incredible and genuine calm seeing the other. It reflects on his expression tho he is not aware of it, it is gone rather quickly.

“I…” The expression slipped a little, a hint of frustration and guilt slipping through the cracks, and yet despite the expression a huff of a laugh escapes him. “I’m embarrassed? I feel like an idiot. I’m confused because you should, by all accounts be furious with me, and justifiably so… and yet you still have the courtesy to ask how I’m doing?”

He sighed softly, glancing down at his page number before closing his book, gently.

“I think, how your doing… is a much more important and interesting question.”

The answer has Ryou relaxing a little. He’d been worried that the other would be upset at the sudden request to meet up. He’s still worried that Marik will be upset at what he’ll have to say next. But they have to talk about it, no matter what the result will be.

“You’re still my friend, and I still care about you.” He sighs, pulling out a chair opposite the tomb keeper. “... And you’re not an idiot. Far from it, actually.”

He sits, setting his books down on the table in front of him. He’s got to pick up a couple more before they leave, but that’s perhaps the least important thing going on in his life right now.

“I am... Well, a little frustrated and in a little pain, but otherwise... also a little guilty.” He shrinks into himself a little unknowingly, fingers coming to the ring around his neck. “To get to the point, I have a question, and something to tell you that might be a little... Oh, it might not be something you want to hear.”

He closes his eyes for a moment, steeling himself, before reopening them to look at Marik.

“Were you... with the spirit last night? He won’t give me an answer.”

My dearest host has been looking into several rituals to separate us.

Marik had though that the night was going to take a less serious tone when Bakura got ontop of him. But then he was hit with that bomb shell of knowledge.

Good Ryou deserves his life, and especially if the sweet one decided Marik was too untrust worthy to remain friends especially after the previous night, Bakura was going to continue to make that hard.

Not that Ryou spending time with his dark half wouldn’t keep that awkward regardless. Marik hasn’t really confronted anyone about the knowledge since Seto Kaiba informed him. It was being sneaky, making sure to switch back in the same places Marik had been when he gained control. It was easy to keep ignoring it was happening.

These thoughts consumed him until the following morning when he received a text from… shit.

Oppsies.

Marik arrived at the library a little earlier than Ryou had requested. He was sure he had an idea what this rendezvous was about. He wished he knew how to even begin to apologize. He picked out a book and a rather comfortable table in the corner, trying to ignore every part of him that wanted to check out of reality. He wished he had the calm from the night before back. All that was left now was guilt.

The double doors the local library have always been so inviting, so welcoming to him in the past. He’s spent hours upon hours here reading, working on homework, or just passing the time. He’s on a first name basis with most of the staff - including the housekeepers. The only person he’s never really met is the branch manager, and he’s thankful for that; everyone says that she’s hard to get along with.

Today, those same doors are daunting. They are the last line of defense between him and the confrontation he knows is about to happen. He’s about to have to have a very difficult conversation with someone he cares about, and that he’s been... hiding from, for the last few weeks. Rather unsuccessfully, due to the fact that his body has apparently been going on outings with the man while he hasn’t been conscious.

Ryou sighs before pushing past the glass.

His muscles are already sore, and when he lifts his stack of books to the counter to return them, they feel like they’re on fire. He’s lucky he’s not doing anything athletic.

After a quick surface-level interaction with the woman behind the counter, he takes his remaining literature and begins to head further into the building. He passes from one section to the next, eyeing some of the spines upon the shelves, before he lands in Reference.

There, he finds a blond sitting at a corner table, engrossed in a history book.

“Hello, Marik.” He’s a little unsure as he approaches, and fairly quiet. There aren’t many people around, but he doesn’t want to bother anyone. “Thank you for coming. How are you?”

He feels the other hold him tighter and he knows. As if he can feel the intention through the other man’s skin.

He can’t help a soft laugh when Bakura says they are a terrible pair. It was true. He hung on every word as the other man spoke. Marik knew these kind of moments did not come naturally to the other. And that Bakura was trying to communicate like this at all… meaningful didn’t seem like enough of an acknowledgement.

He couldn’t help another, rather genuine laugh when the other suggested him hang on for a thousand years or so. The tombkeeper moved to return the tight embrace. He pressed a soft kiss against the thief’s lips again.

And it was in that moment something in his head clicked. “This is how it will be forever…isn’t it? I am the Sun, trying to be warm, kind, and helpful, good, but at the end of the day I am a self obsessed ball of fire likely to burn the people I care about.”

He looped his fingers through a few strands of white hair. “You are the Moon, something that is most beautiful in the darkness. Illuminating it, disappearing into it, controlling the shadows to swallow up whatever you seek to take or destroy.”

These words were easy for him, they didn’t feel like a sentiment, not like admitting he didn’t want to kill the other. “Were stuck rotating around each other in the sky. I agree that we are an aweful pair.”

He leaned back a little to look down at the other man. “You literally feel like a punishment at times, and I know you do it on purpose. And yet, we will still come together as an eclipse again, The king of thieves and the tomb keeping brat.”

He laughed a little, a soft genuine expression on his face. “Ok, let go, you’re sticky and I want to shower.”

That’s a pretty good way to put it, actually. The sun and the moon, eternally dancing around one another. How apt.

“The irony is almost palpable.”

Instead of letting go, he loosens his grip so that he’s able to put one hand on either side of Marik. He pulls on the left and pushes on the right until the blond hits the bed, and he scrambles up to sit upon the man’s waist.

“You did that to yourself.”

His expression is at first fairly smug, a little teasing, but shifts to something a little more somber. This is likely - hopefully - going to be the last serious thing that he says.

“I...” He doesn’t know how to broach this, and he doesn’t want to keep talking about it after he says it. He’s just gonna have to go for it. “My dearest host has been looking into several rituals to... separate us.”

He pauses, scrubbing a hand down his torso to try and get some of the semi-dried fluid off.

“I don’t know what will happen, but one of them... involves releasing me into a new body. I thought you should be aware, on the extreme off chance that it actually works. It should not actually change much.”

Without waiting for a response, removes himself from the tomb keeper, and then - a little more tentatively - the bed. Standing is... precarious, but still doable.

“Hm... Next time, put your back into it.”
