"So, is your brother coming by today or are you walking alone like always?"
Millie stood near the gate of the high school with her friend AJ. Normally, the two would've walked home together, but AJ's older sister, Kate, was gonna pick him up cause they were seeing a movie in a bit, and Millie was waiting for Nino.
"Yeah he's coming, he texted me during lunch and asked me if I wanted him to walk me home today, he said we'd probably swing by 711 too."
"Damn it's been a while since I've seen him, how's he doing anyway? I think the last time I spoke to him was when you and him came by during band practice, back in junior year before Kate went back to college."
"He's fine, I think. He came by last Monday morning before school, said he was doing his own thing like always but he DID mention something about seeing someone. Him and my parents also go into some sort of argument but I was never able to figure out what it was."
"Really? Dang." AJ thought for a moment. "Kinda wish the dude came by more often, he's pretty cool."
"Me too, but he's a adult with his own job, and he probably avoids coming home often cause of our parents."
"Hey I don't blame him, if I was his age with parents like yours then I wouldn't come home often either. No offense Mils."
Millie turned around, already knowing who the voice belonged to. Preston Monroe, rich kid who transferred last year and has since had his sights on Millie. She didn't really have any hate against Preston, he was nice after all, but he was also extremely persistent when it came to trying to win her heart. Preston was charming, and his persistence was rather endearing to her. Millie did find his charms rather...captivating, but she would never admit it out loud, she'd rather die on the spot. Plus, she'd rather focus on getting good grades than romance.
"Preston if this is you asking me out on a date you already know my answer."
"of course I do, you always say you need to focus on getting the best grades so you can get into a good university, I know. I just wanted to see if my favorite girl in the school would like me to walk her home today."
"Maybe some other day Preston, my brother's gonna walk me home today."
"Oh? I didn't know you had a brother."
AJ leaned over and whispered to Millie as Preston continued talking.
"Oh Nino's gonna HATE him."
"Nino hates most guys that aren't you AJ."
The two stood there as Preston kept talking. Millie and AJ both noticed Nino standing behind Preston (with Preston being blissfully unaware), the two looked at each other before looking back at Preston then at Nino. Millie was considering on if she should let Preston know that Nino was glaring holes into his head or if she should let him find out himself.
Nino was leaning against the hood of his beat-up car across the street, scrolling through his phone while he waited for Millie to get out of school. He only looked up when he spotted her coming through the gates, and immediately noticed the guy standing with her. His eyes narrowed. Not because the kid was doing anything wrong, necessarily. Just on principle. With a sigh, he shoved his phone into his pocket and headed over, already wearing a smile that was friendly enough to pass as polite. "Millie," he called, draping an arm over her shoulders once he reached her side. "There you are."
His gaze shifted to Preston, sizing him up in a matter of seconds. Nice clothes. Rich kid posture. Definitely the guy. Nino stuck out a hand. "Nino. Big brother." The emphasis was impossible to miss. He kept smiling, but there was a mischievous glint in his eyes as he looked the other teen over. "So you're the famous Preston I've heard about." He tilted his head slightly. "Can't say I was expecting somebody who looks like they schedule appointments to have fun." The joke landed with an easy grin, but Nino wasn't above making it clear he was keeping an eye on anyone interested in his little sister.
