As an American, I'm at the point where I think we need to find a way to resurrect President John Quincy Adams so he can run for that second term he never got to have. Dude was from the 1700s-1800s, but I have more confidence in him to run the US than any president we've had in the 21st century.
The guy just wanted to build some railroads and educational centers, negotiate lasting peace with Latin America and Europe, and make fair and equal treaties with indigenous peoples.
If we somehow find a way to bring him back and put him in charge as well as convince Congress to go along with his policies, here's how I think things will go down.
We are going to get an immediate upgrade to the public transportation system. Major improvements to our foreign relations. Speeches about showing respect for women, black people, and Native Americans, as well as condemnations of slavery and the Indian Removal Act. The removal of Andrew Jackson from the twenty-dollar bill, because violent, egotistical bigots shouldn't be celebrated as heroes. Huge developments in educational reform and the establishment of publicly funded colleges, as well as additional funding for scientific and educational organizations. We'd see an extremely diverse presidential cabinet with people from different parts of the political spectrum that all get to have a voice in helping Adams make decisions. We'd very likely end up finally switching to the metric system. We'd get reforms in bankruptcy and welfare laws. There'd possibly be the repatriation of tribal lands, as Adams, in his time, repeatedly tried to protect the land rights of native peoples. The US would pull back from constantly interfering in other countries' problems. And we'd almost certainly have a big uptick in our economy.
In short, John Quincy Adams is the most underrated US president of all time. He's one of the sanest and most sensible men to ever serve in the office of president. And I say we try to resurrect him, ASAP.
