have you read about James B. McPherson yet? he was killed during the Battle of Atlanta in 1864 & both Grant and Sherman wanted him to command the entire army if something happens to both of them. i could be remembering wrong, but I believe Grant had said that McPherson could’ve been president in his memoirs.

Yes, I've read a little about him. By narrative causality, he was of course doomed from the moment he was refused leave to go home and marry his sweetheart.

Sherman's memoir is interestingly revealing about McPherson's death. Sherman at no point indicates that this death was a particularly personal blow for him - but he describes everything about that day and the circumstances with well-remembered detail for several pages, where others just kind of die in passing. It's not hard to read between the lines.

i remember reading somewhere that Sherman reportedly wept when given news of McPherson’s death, so he was most likely hit hard by it. i don’t remember Grant’s reaction to it, though he did talk about it in his memoirs.

i haven’t read Sherman’s memoirs.. i did read Grant’s, and i recommend it if you’re interested. grant doesn’t talk like at all about his presidency, so keep that in mind

i don’t think grant wanted to be remembered as president, but for his military career instead, because why else would he leave such a big part of his life out?

grant also talks about his opinions on the war itself & concludes it was indeed about slavery. (interestingly he says that only the original 13 states have the right to secede because they were the ones that ratified the constitution…)

i’ve had people say to me that there’s no way some people in history were gay or they were queer, that there’s “no evidence to support it”, and that by even suggesting an alternative to their view it’s quickly dismissed as wrong, offensive or implausible. as if people like me are putting dirt on a person’s legacy and tainting it with “a woke ideology”. it’s heartbreaking to see that, after all this time, society still believes that homosexuality and queerness is a new concept, or that it’s something to be ashamed of. people say that we’ve come so far, but have we really?

like, no shit sherlock, ofc sometimes there’ll be no obvious evidence that they were gay. they didn’t owe you any. let’s just ignore the fact that if you were considered or suspected of being openly homosexual back then you could’ve been killed, abused or publicly humiliated, your good deeds and accomplishments erased from history and your family discriminated against for years. strange how all it took to determine how society treated you was by who you fucked. and unfortunately it still continues today.

stop thinking that just because it hasn’t been recorded or confirmed it means that they weren’t queer. stop pushing the heterosexual narrative on us and suppressing marginalised communities and voices even more. since when has being narrow minded and bigoted served us well?

and anyways, why are we so certain that they were straight huh? because they were married to women? to men? you’ll probably need me to hold your hand while i say this, but marrying a woman or man doesn’t make someone inherently straight or makes them any less queer. why are we so insistent on centring heterosexuality on historical figures and always immediately concluding that they were straight? you scared they were gay or something? that lgbtqia+ people have always existed, whether they publicly identified themselves as such or not?

i’m sick and tired of people telling us that we’re wrong or crazy to even consider or think of people being outside the realm of heterosexuality, like in some cases, it actually makes more sense for a historical figure to be perceived as gay then straight!

What would each 1776 character be like on a road trip:

John Adams: obnoxious as always. He’d want to stop at every sight seeing opportunity and gives speeches to the Congress on where they are and why it’s important.

Ben Franklin: is asleep the entire trip.

Thomas Jefferson: Is originally on aux but gets kicked off for playing too many mushy love songs.

John Dickinson: complains every second about something, especially about Franklin’s gout foot.

Edward Rutledge: Hates every second of this road trip and requests to be dropped off at a gas station and he finds his way back home somehow.

John Hancock: is the driver and he’s scolding everyone left and right. The windows are also all the way down.

Charles Thomson: Is in the passenger seat and is constantly wiping sweat off of Hancock and also taking notes about the trip.

Stephen Hopkins: drunk as a skunk on rum. Nothing he says makes sense but he gets everyone laughing.

Richard Henry Lee: is now on aux and his songs are actually good and at one point he gets everyone to sing Sweet Caroline.

James Wilson: is miserable and has bad anxiety the whole time, but it’s worth it because Dickinson lets him snuggle into him.

Lyman Hall: Is also asleep but he’s holding hands with Rutledge while Rutledge is still there.

Thomas McKean: Clings to his musket just incase some rude driver cuts them off.

Caesar Rodney: unfortunately he’s unable to go due to poor health. But they all send him a postcard.

George Read: His allergies act up and he is sneezing every 5 seconds which drives everyone insane, and he’s kicked out.

Samuel Chase: is the keeper of the snacks, but he eats them all not even halfway through, so Hancock yells at him and has to go to the grocery store and now Hancock keeps the snacks by him.

Roger Sherman: makes everyone coffee but he spills it on McKean, causing McKean to lose his shit and threaten him with his musket.

Lewis Morris: abstains courteously from attending.

Joseph Hewes: Is squished in the back with Chase and they somehow end up making out???

Josiah Bartlett: Has a giant medical kit with him because he’s paranoid as fuck, and the only person who needs anything is Thomson after he gets a hickey from Hancock and the bruising needs to be covered up.

Robert Livingston: Tries to bring all his kids but Hancock immediately turns them away.

John Witherspoon: Prays every hour on the hour and this gets annoying real quick, so he’s dropped off at a church.

Andrew McNair: Is there mostly to clean up any accidents, and Chase certainly has one.

Courier: He somehow snuck into the van, and they all let him stay.

Abigail Adams: Has to constantly tell John Adams to calm down, and she’s the only one who can get him back to Earth.

Martha Jefferson: She cannot stop making out with Jefferson and it upsets everyone, especially Adams but for a different reason…
