unit 9 evaluation

To start unit 9 as a group we looked at potential routes to go down when we finish our pre-degree at pca. Some of these paths were university which is not something I myself am particularly interested in, we were also told that with many of the careers that I would want to pursue do not need a degree but just a strong portfolio. For this reason i have been thinking about going into do an apprenticeship, mainly for the experience with industry including marketing and socializing with potential customers and just getting a grip with real life. To prepare for this I should try to produce as much work as possible so I have as much choice as possible when it comes to building my portfolio for interviews.

In the communication of unit 9 we have done some group critique, i personally find really helpful. However, one thing that was not too great was that no one said anything negative. I feel it would be more beneficial to be given constructive criticism to help you move forward within your work.

I am really looking forward to becoming more advanced in my skill set learning old and new techniques from professionals and peer, and even at this point I am still very unclear about what I actually want after these 2 years which I do find scary, yet so exciting.I think I need to start looking into different career paths and what choices I have just so I can get a clearer idea of what I could want to do.

When it comes to a professional portfolio I have learnt it must be interesting, there are going to so many different people applying for the same thing that i am doing so it needs to stand out. Another thing to remember is order, it needs to have almost a basic story line to it. And finally base it on work that you can talk about the things you are most proud of, if you choose piece of work that you just didn't care about or just threw in to the mix there wont be any passion behind what your talking about.

In all the previous projects throughout the year i have lacked in my time management and become very stressed in trying to bring myself up to speed. But with project I have set my self a strict and realistic time plan which I have stuck to very well in my opinion.

UNIT 9 progression workshop

From this particular workshop I did not learn a great deal, it was more about messing around and plying with the bits we had. however, we were told how to mold our own masks using acrylic bases and a heat gun which is basically a more powerful hair dryer. It was really interesting for me because I have been thinking about pursuing costume however, i do think that going into fashion is more of my calling. The workshop hasn't really changed my view of higher education because the workshop didn’t really excite me.

12/5/17 Fashion illustration From my workshop I learnt a lot, not much in technique or ability but they were telling us just to go wild with our work. Using shortcut methods rather than doing a full sketch of a human body or face and focus ink on detail we stole images from magazines using only heads and building up collages and layers using as many different materials as possible to capture movement and volume in the designs. I found this way of working so helpful because I am one to focus on small details where as this encouraged me to create as much as possible and I was really happy with all the out comes and I am going to try and continue using this technique.overall the workshop has had a positive effect on my judgement of Tavistock place higher education and I would really enjoy studying up there if I were to follow on to do a degree.

The advertisement on the website drapers jobs caught my eye and I immediately wanted to apply, for your role as design and production manager for pistol panties. I have worked with swimwear fabrics before as well as lace and have really enjoyed working with it.

I have relevant skills within pattern cutting, carrying out multiple projects of my own design and other peoples. I studied for 2 years at plymouth college of art specialising in pattern cutting. I feel as though i could contribute to your company in many aspects. I feel that i have strong leadership skills and can provide a high work ethic and moral to your company.

Creative and formal cv’s

Having a strong CV is a vital part of employment, it is you initial introduction to a potential employer.

Formal CV’s are good for getting average jobs and need to include all your vital contact details, any references your relevant talents and your employment.

In the CV’s above they both have some really strong points but also have plenty of room for improvement, on the right is a formal CV the content is really good and contains all the important parts of what should be included. However the font is a major problem it is difficult to read and very unprofessional. another point is there is no way of contacting the person who has written the CV or any references to pervious employment which would leave you unsure.

On the left is a creative CV for a graphic designer I personally feel that it isn’t very strong in its communication. It lacks any imagination in the graphical edited images and is quite difficult to understand the bottom part is very good and clear but the explanation of skills set doesn't give enough information in my opinion.

Looking at the old portfolios the formal element visually are so important, they can really expand the look of your work over all. Use of white space has show a key part of the impact of your work as well as the layout. ensuring that all your work interlinks together and shows a process that makes sense.

I feel after looking at these portfolios I need to work my use of different medias and the showing of my concepts. the main things I have learnt are to include some creative writing roughly 3 ages per project and layout are key to the success.

Many universities will ask for a digital portfolio and creative cv before the interview process as well as looking at the portfolio before you go and then talk about it with you after looking at it.

what is a professional portfolio?

having an opportunities to show you best work, give an impression to employers and universities. it isn't all the work you have ever done just your best pieces' to example.

written pieces, mood boards, illustrations, 3d pieces, print making examples, film or video, colour pallets sketchbook and research.

top tips....

-research progression routes - application and due dates- ensure your name is on everything - show your skills - keep everything safe and flat - invest in a high quality portfolio case - do everything to your best ability - vary wha you choose to put in - budget for whats inside portfolio - keep work safe -

UNIT 9: For me receiving positive feed back is a really good way of progressing on from your work, however I think it should have been in the whole sketch book and people select their own favourite piece of work. I found it fairly difficult to choose my own skill sets because you are your own worse critic, I don’t really think my skill set is to a high enough standard I just enjoy doing those things a learning more on how to improve. One thing that I need to get better at is my time management and the amount of varied work I produce using different ways of recording with different materials.

1. one thing I really enjoy at college and at home is to sew, unfortunately I no longer have as much personal to do my own projects.

2. there are a few careers I want to follow, I would either go into lingerie designs or into couture design and product would be my ideal job.

3. i want to go into design and pattern cutting keeping involved with all aspects

4. in short term i dont wan to go to uni because i want to travel and gain industry knowledge

5. do a 3rd year at college and go from there

6.i dont want to stay in plymouth, i want to either go to bath or bristol if i were to do a further study

Time lapse and light

Plant shadow, this time lapse is fairly slow and doesn't really capture your attention however I do really like how the shadow almost spins and as the ends the shadow of the building engulfs the plants shadow. This second video I feel is better, it feels more enticing it draws you in showing many concepts of time and how shadows change due to time. The clock, I actually really enjoyed this video it shows a clocks hands spinning and the shadows travelling around it. I think this creates a faster look on time. The last video I find is one of the most power, this is because it shows the shadows of people going about their lives without judgement you can't see what the look like or hear what they are saying but just see their fundamental movements .

For today in order to fill all the units of this project my targets are to develop my designs and produce more of them, I also want to Write about a lot of my work explaining where my inspiration is from and why I have chosen to pursue those ideas in my sketch book.

With the new brief we are working towards a live brief which includes a company called Powered Textiles Limited (PTL), a company which develops soar technology in fashion. We will be focusing on the power of solar energy as a start point then developing that in fashion design.

Advantage of primary source.

I feel tat primary source create a very visual and more involved feel to looking into certain subjects, i feel my opinion wouldn't have been so strong if we didn't have real and fake fur in front of us rather than using images.
