“Inside Out” Therapy Ideas: This is a great movie that provides a window into the mind of a preadolescent girl adjusting to a big move across the country from the perspective of her team of emotions.  Its themes could easily be used to address a number of therapeutic issues and promotes emotional intelligence.  Hopefully the links below inspire some ideas for how you could utilize this movie in your own way.

Superhero Kits:  I like taking kid’s favorite superheroes and exploring what it is about their story that they identify with so I can figure out a way to tie it into treatment.  In the examples above, the Hulk uses his box to help manage his anger and regain control, and the Flash uses his to help him slow down and become more mindful.  

These boxes turn out looking really cool and they are inexpensive and simple to make.  Click here for instructions.

I fill them with things like reminders of coping skills learned, sensory items, bubbles with deep breathing instruction, etc. etc.

Here are examples of  Spiderman and Batman Progressive Muscle Relaxation and Mindfulness scripts, and it is easy to write your own for any hero to meet the child’s specific needs.

My Reaction to Mad Max: Fury Road and the Utter Perfection that is Imperator Furiosa

Okay so. Buckle up, kids. It’s time for Furiosa feels.

Here’s the thing.

I am what’s called a fetal amputee. Fancy way for saying I was born with a missing limb. I’ve written about this on here before, but it’s been a long time and I’ve gained a lot of new followers recently (hai guyz) so it might be news to some of you.

I finally wound up going to see this movie Monday night after work, by myself, cause I was too thirsty for it and couldn’t wait for my friends to be available. Everyone was out of town this weekend for various reasons, so I figured I’d just wait for someone to go with, but then Facebook started talking about how amazing it was and I just couldn’t put it off any longer. So that’s how I ended up in a theater last night, completely by myself – not another soul in the room, sobbing my eyes out.

Because you guys. I am turning 30 years old next week. I’ve been a fan of action film my entire life. And I have NEVER seen a physically disabled, kickass, female lead character in a Hollywood movie EVER – not once, until yesterday.

How to help an artist:

Ditch the like button

No, seriously. If you don’t have money to help out an artist financially, the second best thing is to reblog all the things you like. While liking it does tell the artist that “hey I really like this!” It does jack shit because the only ones who will see that are me and you.

Why do you think there are so SO many posts made by people that are literally summed down to “please reblog my artwork I need the notes!”? Because no one reblogs artwork. Unless you’re a ridiculously popular blog with thousands of followers, you’ll only end up getting 1 or no reblogs.

reading stuff

I’ve been reading the new issue of Psychology Today this morning, and first off, the “Stop this Divorce” article very exciting, but not nearly as earth shattering as  the one on Inner Talk on page 53. Holy cow. I knew self talk is super duper important, and negative self talk is harmful for sure, but the power of changing the pronoun and the distance and clarity it gives is huge.
