She feels different when she shows up at his door a week after they’d last spoken, her face more gaunt, eyes more hollow.
But she’s done it.
The baby, it’s gone.
They stand facing each other for a bit, Max looking at Charles, Charles looking at the floor, a suitcase clutched at her side.
He breaks the silence, “Hi.”
