The North and South Korean Winter Olympic Teams marched together under the Korean Unification flag at the opening ceremony of the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. The athletes were greeted by a thunderous applause when they joined hands and entered the stadium.

Are you still looking forward to Olympics next month? Or has the whole event sort of been well...spoiled for you seeing as you have to be so closely affiliated with him during the games? Or, does that not really bother you?

You see, neither of us is actually too excited about it, but we agreed to do it because it makes both of us look better.

As the host nation, it shows South is mature enough to look past political differences in order to foster a spirit of cooperation and sportsmanship. On my end, it shows I am not the belligerent lunatic everyone says I am, and that I’m not going to fling a missile into the games or something ridiculous like that.

However, many people in the South don’t think a joint team should be formed. His athletes also don’t want to have joint teams because they don’t want to play with strangers (fair enough). And–South is unhappy because he thinks I’m casting a “shadow” on his happy day as host.

Frankly, I think it’s the other way around. I’m the one who is going to be in his shadow the whole time. Because I’m not the “real” Korea, I’m just a freeloader who jumped on in the last minute. In an ideal world, we would have hosted the games together from the start, and there wouldn’t be people telling me I shouldn’t be allowed to be there.

The only other positive is that America is mad that South and I are “getting along” and didn’t invite him to any of our negotiations. If he had his way, I’d be participating separately or not at all, because it plays into the “evil rogue nation” rhetoric he loves so much better than South and I having a joint team.

How does your country ring in the New Year? Happy 2018, by the way!

Like most other countries, I have a big celebration in my capital. 

Most people start by paying respects to my past leaders by laying flowers at the foot of their statues. People also pay respects to their parents, elders, and teachers. Many go home to spend time with their families. Songpyeon, the traditional rice cake that is also made for Chuseok, is often prepared.

In the afternoon, people flock to the squares of Pyongyang to take part in singing and dancing. Those who don’t go to the squares spend time on the banks of the Taedong River, having picnics and barbecues and playing games.

In the evening, everyone gathers in Kim Il Sung square for the big countdown. This year there was an ice sculpture festival going on to keep people entertained while they wait for the new year. At the stroke of midnight, the Taedong Bell rings and fireworks are shot off behind Juche Tower to welcome the Gregorian New Year. We will also celebrate Lunar New Year on February 16, and Juche New Year on April 15.
