Minecraft accepts formatting codes in text. These can’t be typed manually in chat or text boxes, but can be pasted into books or entered with a mod or editor.

The formatting codes are:

§0 — Black.

§1 — Dark blue.

§2 — Dark green.

§3 — Teal.

§4 — Maroon.

§5 — Purple.

§6 — Brown.

§7 — Light grey.

§8 — Dark grey.

§9 — Light blue.

§a — Lime green.

§b — Aqua.

§c — Light red.

§d — Pink.

§e — Yellow.

§f — White.

§k — Obfuscated.

§l — Bold.

§m — Strikethrough.

§n — Underlined.

§o — Italic.

§r — Reset.

These codes are case-sensitive (§a is different from §A), and codes §0 to §f are the same as the colours used by MS-DOS.

what is the best mod been made.

I can’t answer this objectively, but I’ll give you my opinions.

My favourite vanilla-compatible mod: Rei’s Minimap. It’s very useful, and works on single-player and multi-player.

My favourite vanilla-incompatible mods: IndustrialCraft, though I quite like BuildCraft and RedPower.

My favourite Bukkit plugins: Essentials, WorldEdit, and PowerNBT. They make custom world creation and server administration a lot easier.
