The first time Harry hears this ridiculous rumour, he finds it amusing. 

“Me and Malfoy?” He asks.

The intern nods. “Everyone thinks you’re together.”

“That’s ridiculous. People will just make up anything nowadays.”

“Y-yeah, totally.”

The second time, it's less funny because it’s from Dean, a fully trained adult Auror, not some naive teenage intern. 

“Potter, could you ask your healer boyfriend if he could send over the reports today?” 

“...my what.”

“Your boyfriend?” Dean replies, looking up from his work.

“Malfoy isn’t my boyfriend.” He replies quickly, defensively. 

Dean gives him a look. “Right. Just ask him for those reports.”

After the third, fourth, fifth, and even sixth time, Harry stops finding it funny.

"Why does everyone think I’m dating Malfoy? I mean, that’s insane. Right, guys?"

Ron and Hermione exchange the ‘are you seeing what I’m seeing?’ look that Harry has been a victim of since they were fourteen.

"What?" He asks.

“Well, Harry-” Hermione starts, clearly ready to gentle parent him into whatever realization he was missing, until Ron interrupts.

“Maybe you should ask Malfoy, mate.”

Harry is not asking Malfoy. He’ll just ask everyone else. He’s an Auror, after all; investigations like this are his thing. Obviously, this rumour is coming from somewhere. He’ll just ask around until he finds out where. 

He goes up to the Mungos’ receptionist, bracing himself. He inhales, then asks, “Could you tell me where my boyfriend is?”

She doesn’t even look up. “He’s on spell damage today, fourth floor.”

“Malfoy’s not my boyfriend.”

She looks up. “Alright.” She looks extremely unconvinced. 

“I’m being serious. We’re not dating.”

“Really?” 

“Yes.”

"Oh." 

Harry does not like how shocked she looks. He shakes his head. She probably sees lots of people and gets confused; he doubts it means anything.

That is, until everybody’s answer is like that. 

“Isn’t he your partner for every gala?”

“He leaves any case he’s on if you’re injured.”

“You literally threatened the Minister because he accidentally insulted Malfoy.”

“You bring him coffee every morning?”

“You guys go to the same place for lunch every day. Even the Prophet’s bored of it.”

Harry is beginning to suspect he may not survive this investigation with the insane things people are saying. I mean, it’s all true, but clearly taken out of context.

"Malfoy."

Draco doesn’t look up from his paperwork. "Potter."

"Everyone thinks we're dating." 

“I’m afraid they do.” He replies dryly.

“Uh, do you not care?” Harry asks.

Draco looks up at him, raising an eyebrow. “Do you?”

Harry pauses, realizing he actually doesn’t mind the idea. He was just worried Draco would take offense to such an egregious misunderstanding.

“No.”

“Then there isn’t really an issue, is there?”

“Suppose not.”

“Well, I have work to do. I’ll talk to you later tonight.”

“Er- alright then.” As Harry reaches for the door, Draco speaks again.

"Harry."

Harry turns. "Yeah?"

“Has it ever occurred to you that perhaps everyone else might be right?” Draco asks, suddenly looking at him expectantly.

 “I, er, guess so,” Harry replies, faltering under his sharp stare. Draco looks satisfied with this answer, even though Harry has never felt more confused in his life.

Malfoy acts like everything is normal later that day, but Harry can't stop thinking about it.

‘Has it ever occurred to you that perhaps everyone else isn't misunderstanding the situation?’ What bloody situation? He tries to pay more attention to things.

The next morning, when Harry drops off Draco's coffee, nobody looks surprised, as per usual. One Healer actually says, "Morning, you two."

Draco replies, "Morning." Like, this is normal. Like that is a normal thing to say. Harry doesn't even work here!

During a meeting, Draco throws a hissy fit because Harry’s robes aren’t on right, and he adjusts his collar. Nobody reacts. Draco falls asleep on his shoulder during one of their breaks. Nobody reacts.

Later that day, he gets an invite to a Gala addressed to the both of them. Like they’re a unit. 

“This is insane! To Mr Potter and Mr Malfoy. What the hell are they thinking?”

Ron doesn’t even look up from his paper. “Yeah, Mate, that’s so crazy.” He says, half listening. 

He looks around to see if anyone else saw this insanity, but no one has reacted. Wait. Harry thinks about the stupid coffee. The lunches. The galas. The fact that they almost live together with how often Malfoy’s at Grimmauld.

Oh.

the marauders as descendants characters actually makes me INSANE because sirius as mal and regulus as uma is so painfully perfect it hurts.

like sirius being mal, son of maleficent and hades, golden chosen villain kid, messy and dramatic and so convinced he’s the one who deserves out first. except in this au, walburga is maleficent, orion is hades, and sirius and regulus are half brothers because orion cheated on walburga with ursula. regulus is ursula’s son. walburga wants absolutely nothing to do with him because he is not hers and he is living proof of orion humiliating her, so regulus grows up as this unwanted little sea witch brat on the Isle, shoved to the side and mocked and treated like something inconvenient.

and sirius is awful to him.

like properly awful.

he bullies regulus when they’re kids. calls him shrimpy. laughs at him. makes him feel small every chance he gets because sirius has walburga’s favour and maleficent’s legacy and all that sharp, ugly pride drilled into him. regulus is just the half-brother from the docks. the kid with sea magic, too much anger, and nowhere to put it.

then sirius gets chosen.

sirius gets picked to go to Auradon with james as ben, mary as evie, remus as carlos, and evan as jay, and regulus begs to come too. not even in a dramatic way at first. just desperate. because sirius is his brother. because as much as sirius has been cruel to him, he is still the only family regulus has that is close enough to hurt.

and sirius laughs in his face.

he leaves him behind.

so by the second movie, regulus as uma is not just some random villain trying to steal a wand or make a point. he is furious. he is humiliated. he is hurt in that specific way that comes from being abandoned by the one person who should have understood what it meant to be trapped there. he doesn’t just want revenge on Auradon. he wants revenge on sirius. he wants sirius to look at him and realise that the little “shrimpy” kid he left on the docks became the captain of the whole damn place.

and then barty as harry hook? obsessed. feral, loyal, dramatic, knife-smile, absolutely ready to follow regulus into war because regulus said so. peter as gil is also so funny because he would be standing there saying the most accidentally devastating thing while everyone else is having a breakdown. regulus has this whole pirate crew of freaks and weirdos who love him because he actually stayed. sirius got out and became polished and heroic. regulus stayed and became a legend.

james as ben is also so good because of course he is the golden boy king trying to fix everything with smiles and big speeches and reckless optimism. mary as evie is perfect too, clever and stylish and underestimated. remus as carlos makes me want to chew glass in the best way because he has that nervous, clever, soft-but-surviving energy. evan as jay is hilarious because he would absolutely pretend he doesn’t care while stealing everything not nailed down.

marlene as loni? yes. lily as jane with petunia as fairy godmother? evil. petunia being the fairy godmother and still constantly putting lily down is so nasty and so perfect because lily would be trying so hard to be good enough while petunia keeps acting like she’s embarrassing just for existing. frank as doug is adorable. fabian as chad is insane in the funniest possible way. emma vanity as audrey is perfect mean-girl princess energy.

but the core of it is sirius and regulus.

mal and uma, but make it brothers. make it betrayal. make it half-family drama with sea witch rage and dragon-fire pride. make sirius the one who escaped and regulus the one who was left behind. make regulus build himself into someone untouchable because nobody ever came back for him.

because the second regulus says, “what’s my name?” it is not just a pirate anthem.

it is a warning.

it is him making sure sirius never forgets it again.

and regulus’ pirate crew in this au is EVERYTHING to me because it is not just “the villains who got left behind.” it is the kids who got abandoned and then chose each other anyway.

barty as harry hook being regulus’ right hand is actually sickeningly perfect. like that is his ride or die, his guard dog, his feral little shadow with eyeliner and a blade and absolutely zero survival instinct if regulus tells him to jump. barty is not just loyal to regulus. he is obsessed with him. devoted to him. fully ready to bite someone’s throat out in the middle of the docks because they looked at regulus wrong.

and regulus trusts him in a way he does not trust anyone else.

because barty stayed.

barty saw regulus as this furious little sea witch prince with too much pride and too much hurt and instead of laughing at him, instead of leaving him behind, he went, yeah, alright, that one. that’s my captain. that’s my boy. that’s the person i’m following into every bad idea for the rest of my life.

and they are absolutely lovers too. not softly, not neatly, not in an auradon-approved little fairytale way. they are dock fights and stolen kisses and barty grinning with blood on his teeth because regulus said his name. they are barty draped all over regulus’ throne like a threat. they are regulus pretending not to notice while keeping one hand in barty’s hair. they are barty calling him captain in that voice that makes everyone else immediately feel like they should leave the room.

barty is regulus’ guard dog and everyone knows it.

someone insults regulus? barty is already moving.

someone threatens regulus? barty is already laughing.

someone says sirius’ name too casually around him? barty is standing behind regulus with that horrible little grin like please, please give me a reason.

and then peter as gil makes me insane in a completely different way because peter was probably friends with sirius and remus before auradon. not best friends, not really. more like the background friend. the one who was always there, always useful, always trailing after them, always trying to keep up. sirius and remus probably joked with him, but also over him. laughed at him a little too often. made him feel like he was part of the group right up until the moment it mattered.

then they get chosen.

sirius, remus, mary, evan. they get out.

and peter gets left behind.

but they tell him they’ll come back.

of course they do. they say it like it’s obvious. like it is easy. like peter is stupid for looking scared. they’ll come back for him. they’ll talk to ben/james. they’ll fix it. they’ll get him out next.

and then they don’t.

days turn into weeks. weeks turn into months. peter waits. peter keeps making excuses for them. they are busy. auradon is complicated. they would not forget him. sirius would not forget him. remus would not forget him.

except they do.

or maybe they do not forget, which is worse. maybe they remember and still do nothing.

so peter is still on the isle, still hungry, still being shoved around, still trying to survive off promises that have started to rot in his hands.

and that is where regulus finds him.

because regulus knows that look. regulus knows what it is to stand on the docks and watch someone leave after they promised, in one way or another, that they would not. regulus knows what it feels like to have sirius black look back at you and still keep walking.

so regulus takes peter in.

not dramatically. not sweetly. probably with some sharp little comment like, “stop sulking in my territory unless you plan on being useful.” but he takes him in. gives him a place on the crew. gives him food. gives him a role. gives him something sirius and remus never really gave him.

importance.

and peter becomes loyal to regulus so fast it probably scares him.

because regulus does not treat him like a joke. regulus snaps at him, sure. regulus is not exactly gentle. but he listens when peter speaks. he notices what peter is good at. he lets peter be funny without making him the punchline. he lets him stand close. he lets him belong.

so now peter is not sirius’ forgotten background friend anymore.

he is regulus’ crew.

and that means something.

barty is regulus’ blade. peter is regulus’ witness. barty is the one who would burn auradon down for him, and peter is the one who remembers every single person who left them behind and every single promise they broke.

so when regulus comes back in the second movie with his crew behind him, it hits harder.

because it is not just regulus getting revenge.

it is regulus, barty, and peter standing together as the leftovers. the abandoned kids. the ones sirius thought would stay small forever.

sirius left regulus behind.

sirius and remus left peter behind.

and regulus looked at peter and said, fine. if they do not want you, i do.

that is why peter is loyal to him now. not because regulus is nicer. not because the pirate crew is safer. but because regulus stayed on the isle and still chose him.

and honestly? that makes regulus’ crew so much more dangerous.

because auradon has princes and crowns and pretty speeches.

but regulus has the kids who were promised rescue and never got it.

and they are done waiting.
