Mikko Hirvonen Answers Fans’ Questions About Dakar 2017
You asked, we listened. After wrapping up the 2017 Dakar Rally, Mikko Hirvonen joined us to answer questions via WhatsApp from international MINI motorsport fans.Â
How do you get ready for Dakar?
By training. For example, I put my exercise bike in the sauna at home and I train in there to get used to the effort in the heat. I also do different kinds of sports, because the physical condition is very important to compete in that kind of long race.
What was the most unprecedented challenge you faced in this Dakar compared to others, or other races?
The very high dunes in Bolivia! It's was really challenging but this is precisely what I like in the rally raid.
When something is going wrong, how do you think quickly and clearly at the same time?
When something is going wrong, we need to keep calm and find a solution. The most important thing is not to panic and try to manage the problem.
How is the challenge of Dakar different from WRC in terms of the driver's technical ability?
It's totally different. In WRC, the stages are lot shorter and the cars are completely different, too. In Dakar, the drivers have to manage the long stages, the heat, the landscape and the difficulties on the way. WRC is more a sprint. It's not easier, but it's a more concentrated effort.
What is the highest speed you've reached in the 2017 Dakar race?
182 km/h (113 mph) was the maximum speed we have reached in Dakar.
How much time does it take you to replace a tyre in the case of a puncture?
It takes in general less than two minutes.
What did you like and dislike most during the Dakar? By the way, how I wish I could see you drive more often, missing your shiny smile and talent!
Thank you very much! I like the adventure, the dunes, and the difficulties. This is what I was looking for when I started to compete in rally raid. What I dislike the most is the strong heat. I know that it's a part of the thing, but I'm struggling a bit with that.
What was it what you liked most about Paraguay?
The kindness of the people, and the atmosphere. We had a very warm welcome there and it felt really good.
What's your opinion about the stage in Paraguay? Would you like to come back next year?
It was a short stage so it's difficult to say, but we liked the atmosphere a lot, and the welcome in Paraguay was really amazing. Big thanks to all the Paraguayan fans for that!
Would you run the Trans-Chaco rally of Paraguay?
Why not! If I have the opportunity and the time to do it, it would be with pleasure.
What car do you drive in your personal life?
We have a big family car. It’s necessary when you have two boys playing ice hockey!
How can I become a rally driver?
It's a long process. The most important is to believe in yourself and not ignore steps. It's important take the time to learn and start with R3 rally cars or smaller at the beginning. It's the only way to see if you are made for this or not.
