American Short Fiction rejected my submission after an eight month wait for news! But I’m not all that upset about it? They sent me a higher-tier rejection letter that was actually nice to read, so I think that has an effect. It’s promising. It’s on to the next journal!
There is always a “black hole of misery” in a Julian Fellowes drama. Someone who just cannot get any luck, who seems to suck in all fortune, good and bad. Nothing bad escapes them. But they get theirs in the end. In Downton Abbey it was Anna and Edith. Last season of The Gilded Age is was Oscar, seems this season it’s Gladys.
I’ve had this Humans of New York post saved to my phone for years, I’ve even printed it out, put it in a frame, and hung it on the wall in my office at work. Because it’s so true and reminds me that although I’m nearly 40 myself I can still do the work. I can still get published.
I booked a hair cut and color appointment for when I'm visiting home (at the only salon that ever gets it right) and the stylist I used to go to has since advanced his career and now charges major $$$ for his cuts, which, good for him, and I'm wanting to get some balyage color done, which is also $$$ and they may not be able to do the color I want (strawberry blonde) because that requires bleaching. He does my hair so well but I'm also looking at my pocketbook and crying...
We'll see how it goes...

Only because I've been reading the Emily WIlde series and been looking for everything and anything related online, including fan works, am I riled up about this. I see so much fan art of Emily and Wendell in Victorian attire--full skirts and long jackets. I see so many fan posts about Emily and Wendell doing Victorian things and being Victorian besties.
The first book is set in 1909, the second in 1910. They're not doing Victorian things, people. They're doing late-EDWARDIAN things. They should be wearing late-Edwardian styles in your fanart! Raise her waistlines, slim her skirts! Shorten his jackets! Think: Paul Poiret, Downton Abbey. When Emily talks about putting her hair in a bun, think Gibson Girl. If not anything else, in a couple years (storyverse), the Titanic will sail. In a few more years, World War One will start. Put them in clothes of that era.
Although I think the character Emily Wilde doesn't give a crap about fashion, she would still be in era-correct silhouettes. I could actually see her donning pants and boots on some research expeditions. Stop putting her in a big bustle and tiny hat combination!

By the way, since you seem so well-versed in clothes of that period, I have a question: when Emily is talking about her dowdy style, she often says she's wearing a "brown woolen shift". I was under the impression that a shift was an undergarment, so how does that affect her outward appearance? Or is there an actual proper dress called a shift that I'm unaware of?
Yeah, this really confuses me because “shift” is another word for chemise and no way would a chemise be made of wool (my god, imagine the itching). Either the author made a mistake or she’s referring to a “sheath gown” which is a type of dress that became popular in 1910. It moved away from the idealized “S” shape common to Edwardian styles and ushered in the empire/column dress styles to come (that we see in movies/shows like Titanic and Downton Abbey). We get this type of dress:

Now, Emily describes her clothing as something more utilitarian and Wendell describes it as something like “dowdy” (lol), so I don’t think she’s dressed in such elegant dresses, but the shape is something like this:

But Emily describes her field-wear as boots and trousers, so I’d bet she’s in something like men’s sporting-wear when doing research out in the field.
Ohh, yeah I got the feeling the word "shift" was meant to refer to her wearing clothes that don't have a very defined shape, and while the dresses above are lovely, they're also kinda straight and dont have very exaggerated shapes, which could be what the author was going for. But yes, you're probably right about her wearing men's clothes while hiking anyways, sounds more practical.
It's also notable to me that Emily probably does disregard certain important standards of the era. Compendium basically confirms she doesn't wear corsets when she rejects a royal gown that she'd have to lace up in the front. So, some of these odd descriptions of her clothes could just be her bucking the trend c:
Yes, and I’d think that she wears more sensible versions of the pictures I showed (admittedly, they’re pretty fancy). These pictures below from the first season of Downton abbey are more everyday wear of both the upper class and the working class, and I can see the character of Emily in some of these. She could probably get away with not wearing a corset in some of them (even working class women worse corsets. Some of the styles require it to look "right").
Also, notice the upper class men’s clothing. I thought it was odd that the author made a point to mention Wendell is dressed in all black, when, other than grey or muted tans and greens, black was the most common color for men to wear! The black overcoat was almost ubiquitous. I think he’d be dressed like this as a Cambridge professor. Working class men and boys, or men in sporting wear would often wear the flat cap hat (seen on the men in the last photo). This is a great era for Wendell, since men’s clothing (as stil is now) is all about very well tailored everything. He probs looks very well dressed, even casually, and is always on-trend.
Honestly? Watching the first season of Downton Abbey will give you all the style notes of this era. The show is pretty close in the clothing accuracy. This is one of my favorite historical eras for fashion.

I love this actually it really brings you into the scene. It denies you the psychological position of outside observer and makes you feel as if you were almost there.
The fairie world seems like such an unserious serious place. I’d like to visit.
I've already said that my number one piece of writing advice is to read.
But my number two piece of advice is this: be deliberate.
Honestly this would fix so many pieces of bad writing advice. Don't forbid people from doing something, tell them to be conscious and deliberate about it. This could help stop people from falling into common mistakes without limiting their creativity. Black and white imperatives may stop a few annoying beginner habits, but ultimately they will restrict artistic expression.
Instead of "don't use epithets": "Know the effect epithets have and be deliberate about using them." Because yes, beginners often misuse them, but they can be useful when a character's name isn't known or when you want to reduce them to a particular trait they have.
Instead of "don't use 'said'" or "just use 'said'": "Be deliberate about your use of dialogue tags." Because sometimes you'll want "said" which fades into the background nicely, but sometimes you will need a more descriptive alternative to convey what a character is doing.
Instead of "don't use passive voice": "Be deliberate about when you use passive voice." Because using it when it's not needed can detract from your writing, but sometimes it can be useful to change the emphasis of a sentence or to portray a particular state of mind.
Instead of blindly following or ignorantly neglecting the rules of writing, familiarize yourself with them and their consequences so you can choose when and if breaking them would serve what you're trying to get across.
Your writing is yours. Take control of it.
It probably sounds like I'm preaching to the choir here because most of my mutuals are already great writers. But I'm hoping this will make it to the right people.

Whyyy is this so funny to me. I literally lol-ed.
I just learned from a colleague that they don’t picture anything in their mind when they read. Nothing. The story doesn’t run like a movie in their head, they just absorb the words and take it as is. They still enjoy reading, both fiction and non fiction, but it’s not for them what is it for me. This surprised and baffled me because I can’t read a story and not have a vivid movie running in my mind. But of course, everyone is not me, so of course there are other ways to process reading a story. No? This was a wild thing to learn!
