The pause in lyrics over the song’s bridge saw him draw back from the microphone before holding one hand out, beckoning, to Sai, inviting her to intentionally lace her fingers with his now -- before yanking her sharply towards him, this time actually meaning for her to lose her balance and stumble up against him. For a moment, his grin flashed mischievous.

“Deep in her eyes, I think I see the future.” Okay, he was doing it intentionally now, the way his gaze met hers in perfect time with the words - the way his free hand had lifted to trace her jawline, preventing her from looking away. “I realize this is my last chance --”

“Playin’ the crowd like that.” The ferret rolled his eyes, ducking his head and shuffling some to give himself enough room to turn and head back towards the bar. “Best hope he ain’t leadin’ her on with all that show, or I swear I’ll make him eat my fist.”

Subconsciously, he wet his lips between verses. “This woman is my destiny, she said --” “Loosenin’ up?” That was a guffaw if ever there was one. “Oh, trust me, this ain’t loosenin’ nothin’. You let the unit have a private room ‘stead of this main area and it’s a whole ‘nother ball game. Rookies ain’t go no idea what bossman is off the clock.”

“My discotheque Juliet, teenage dream!” Whoops and cheering, indeed; they sure weren’t staying as quiet as they’d started, that much was for certain. For a brief moment, Rei glanced sidelong at the crowd before his gaze settled on the ferret-bot across the room from him - he saw how Ghost was leaning in like that, and damned if he trusted it. Not much he could do about it now, though. “I felt it in my chest as she looked at me - I knew we were bound to be together, bound to be together!”

His hand was still on her hip. He wasn’t exactly making any move to change that. In fact, his fingers pressed in a bit, as if to keep Sai from being the one to draw back.

“No dice, hot shot.” Rollout snorted, shaking his head. “I ain’t dumb enough to go in on that one. ‘Sides, knowin’ bossman, it wouldn’t be no accident, neither.”

“I said, you’re holding back, she said, shut up and dance with me!” The blonde tugged the microphone closer to him at that, his other arm moving to rest on her hip - and drag her up close to his own body, stomachs pressing together for a brief moment before, grin spreading, he spun her around backwards so that she was at arms’ length from him, the small of her back resting against the palm of his hand. 

Oh, now she’d done it...he’d actually started to get into this. His voice got a bit louder, a bit more passionate, as he went on. “This woman is my destiny, she said --”

Rollout, meanwhile, snorted at the androgynous general’s inquiry. “You kiddin’ me? This ‘ere’s prolly the closest they’ll get to a ‘d’y’wanna get coffee’ in the next...eh, decade r’so.”

“We were victims of the night, the chemical, physical kryptonite,” she sang, swaying to the beat of the song with a grin, “helpless to the bass and faded light~ Oh! We were born to get together, bound to get together~!”

Oh no. She wouldn’t. She was not.

…she was.

Fine. If she was going to play like this then, he like hell she’d get him to back down now. His arm shot forwards and snatched the microphone straight out from between her fingers, meeting her eyes - and her grin - evenly as he kicked his vocal subroutines into a setup he swore he hadn’t used since Rave took herself off the roster so many years past.

“She took my arm - I don’t know how it happened. We took the floor and she said…”

He seemed ridiculously at ease, all things considered, as he leapt into the song right where the oni had left off. The clusters of off-duty Hunters at the tables just south of the stage didn’t seem to matter to him - nor did the smattering of gawking stares, some of the audience seemingly unable to wrap their circuits around the fact that Commander Zero was actually deigning to join in with such a seemingly ‘frivolous’ activity. 

( The large, smug-looking ferret at the bar, however, knew better. Rookies, he chuckled, shaking his head. They’d get over it, in time. He was just waiting his turn. )

"Why do you do this to yourself?"

“Do what to whose self?” Well, he certainly sounded nonchalant enough, his expression misfitly calm and collected despite the dirt and oil and coolant smudging synthskin and armor alike. “I’m sure I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

It wasn’t exactly like this was an unusual line of conversation for the two. Ever the worrywart, Xenon would fret and fuss over every last scratch the blonde ever accrued when he was out on active duty - and, ever levelheaded, Rei would shoot down each and every overworked concern like it was a troublesome insect, even to the point of physically shooing the lieutenant commander away from him when it got to be too much.

Granted…today was a bit different.

After all, it wasn’t every shift that he’d come in clutching his own arm, sheared messily off just below the shoulder in a snarl of sharp-skewed metal and fizzling wires, in the firm grip of the opposite palm. The acrid scents of burnt rubber and seared metal drifting lazily around him, practically visible for how thickly they clung to his frame, were a blatant giveaway that this wasn’t precisely a fresh wound; the commander had, in fact, gone on to definitively settle the altercation he’d been engaged in before making his way back to HQ without so much as a precautionary raze to let Medbay know to expect him.

The latter, at least, the Light-bot really should have grown to anticipate by this point.
