Don't worry. I'll protect you.
things in fic I'm used to people kind of faking their way through writing about:
the city of los angeles
the city of new york
sex
how drinking alcohol works
how getting high works
how a child of any age speaks
how nuclear physics work
how [my job] works
how debilitating being shot in the shoulder is
how hypothermia works
things I have never before seen someone fake their way through writing about, until today:
what french toast is
read through the notes on this one trust me
Here's some of the notes, starting with the things multiple people brought up:
SHRIMP COCKTAIL:
banahbanah: #flashback to that one fic where Peter Parker frets about drinking shrimp cocktail because of the alcohol
generaldeliciousness: adding: what a prawn/shrimp cocktail is
#why is your character turning it down because they're under 21 #do you think prawn cocktail is a cocktail #this lives in my brain rent-free constantly #the rest of the fic was so normal #and good enough that i'll still re-read it #but bro
And then many, MANY, people wondering if this was actually authour mistake, since Peter really would do this!
POMEGRANATES:
zhajhassa: #haha where's that post that was like someone describing someone eating a pomegranate but they ate it like an apple
thornhands: #once someone wrote persephone biting into a whole Pomegranate #had to stop and stare at a wall for a minute
sungsingsanguine: I once saw someone very confidently write about a character eating slices of pomegranate.
FRUIT TREES:
zagreuses-toast: #given a very endearing glimpse into a writers blindspots by seeing them describe someone sitting under a ''pineapple tree''
salatrash: I remember something about picking watermelons... OF A FUCKING TREE
baander: #cranberry trees
DOUGH/BATTER:
maycelium: #I'm a chef so I'm really used to people not accurately describing how to cook food #But I was surprisingly flabbergasted when someone was writing making a cake and was kneading it. Which uh #Not necessary for cake. It was interesting for sure but just bizarre
livebloggingmydescentintomadness: #the one that drove me nuts was when a character set aside a batch of PASTA DOUGH 'to rise' #pasta doesn't have yeast!! #it does need to REST but it will never RISE #you do not want an airy crumb on your noodles
lovesodeepandwideandwell: #THE ONE WHERE THEY MADE COOKIES BY LADLING BATTER INTO A TRAY
Some other topics:
Lots of authors in the Miraculous Ladybug fandom are very confidently wrong about French things. This includes but is not limited to:
- cuisine and café culture
- the French school system
- the French language (including some absolutely horrific translations and cringeworthy conversations)
- culture and interpersonal relationships including how bisoux work (air-cheek kisses) and the level of intimacy required to use them when greeting people
- French and Parisian geography
- the Paris metro
- how absolutely disgusting the Seine is for the love of god please do not go swimming in the Seine please please please 🤮
No show did it like Agents of Shield. Episode 1, Coulson does his best to talk down a man having a mental health crisis, proclaiming with every shred of desperation and his own sense of self “It matters who I am!” The show refuses to make Mike another nameless victim, immediately setting it aside from large scale plotlines the avengers deal with. And as Mike screams at Coulson, blaming the agent in front of him for every way the government has hung him out to dry, that it’s not enough to be just him anymore in a word of gods and monsters, Coulson just says softly “I know”
No one did it like agents of shield. No one broke the MCU down into the small stories like it did.
It’s cute and all, till you remember why they’re having to do the shopping alone.
Wow, look I posted something of actual substance! I got a few suggestions for more baby Yang and Ruby drawings, and I’m kind of in love with drawing them right now, so expect more sweet little beans to come! <3
KPDH au where Celine is the demon that Mi-yeong fell in love with.
Not a Celine became a demon au, but a Celine was never a hunter to begin with until her love went and died, alongside her hunter partners, and somehow she's the only one around to train her young half-demon huntress child and wait what what do you mean you found your other two hunters and you want me to train them. I am a Demon Rumi, an Evil Unredeemable Demon.
Meanwhile all three girls absolutely adore her, and she's their only example of a caring mother figure.
Finally finished this idea for the kpdh girls! <3
It's been said before but I'll say it again. Nuts and Dolts are so Romeo and Juliet coded. I am never going to get over the way that Penny committed suicide minutes after thinking that Ruby had died in front of her, and then Ruby committed suicide One Day after learning Penny had died. They were each other's worlds

Keeping the powers safe, and ensuring they be passed to the right person was absolutely the foundation of Penny's decision. However, the thing to keep in mind about Ruby and Penny's canonical relationship is that they are each other's hope.
Penny has already expressed martyr tendencies, this course of action isn't coming from nowhere. But! Every time Penny has started to think in that direction, Ruby has been the person to renew her hope in another path that still saves lives without self-sacrifice. Penny may not have had much opportunity to express it, but the loss of Ruby was Devastating to her. Ruby had been her reason to keep going through all of the trauma of the last days of Atlas.
In the reverse: Ruby wasn't so outward in her suicidal thoughts as Penny, but the return of Penny genuinely changed so much for Ruby. She never shows how depressed she's actually feeling, but being around Penny is the first time since Beacon that Ruby was genuinely giddy and happy. It's visible if you pay attention to her behavior throughout Volume 7.
With each of their sources of hope gone, neither girl lasted long. This was intentional writing, no matter whether you consider them romantic or platonic.

I would actually agree with you about Penny not wanting to pass the burden onto Ruby except Penny directly suggested it the last time the chips were down. I think this might have been because Penny genuinely believes in Ruby in a way she doesn’t anyone else. Penny loves people, don’t get me wrong, but I think if there was anyone in the world that she thought could handle the burden and thrive, it was Ruby. Now we know this isn’t entirely true, but she’s also the person who asked Ruby to kill her as if Ruby wouldn’t rather die first. Obviously Winter wasn’t an option when she said that, but even despite their own wonderful friendship, I think Ruby was always going to be her first instinct to turn to in a time limited decision. All the logic in the world from an outside perspective wouldn’t be as involved as one assumes. She trusts Ruby, to an extent that she also trusts Ruby's ability to handle burdens that would break others.
As for a Possible Penny resurrection?
I think Pietro sacrificing himself is the only real possibility for canon to go that direction and having it not feel shoehorned in. In that case there’s still a genuine loss and in-world logic, so her death doesn’t feel like just a writing trick. I think it’s possible to do in a way that feels good, but I don’t know if I anticipate that actually happening in canon. I personally would actually love it, but that's mostly because I’d take Penny back in any capacity.
I think it would only be possible because of the Maiden powers and how they’ve been set up. If her soul is genuinely with Winter now, resurrecting her might take the Winter Maiden powers with her.
This doesn’t negate Ruby’s arc in Volume 9, because as much as Penny was the catalyst, it wasn’t actually about Penny. Ruby needed to learn not to hold everything in as much and restore some hope for herself, and the others needed to learn how much of a burden Ruby had actually been carrying.
Pietro sacrificing himself feels like an actual possibility (even if only a small one) because Pietro would do that in a single heartbeat if he ever discovered a way to make it work, and despite it all Penny never was technically human even after Ambrosius. I imagine Penny will only be back in noncorporeal ways however, in canon. (Such as in flashbacks, or Winter's thoughts) RWBY is a show about Hope though, so maybe all is not lost.

"the writing makes it look like yang and ruby don't care for each other!" my dude my buddy, my guy have you forgotten the REASON we are on this drug fueled mystery ride of and island is that yang was her usual stupidly heroic self and flung her near aura-less body between her baby sister and a trained assassin only to be yeeted to her (presumed) death leaving behind said sister, her best friend and the woman she loves. (who then also got yeeted and no one is actually dead but that doesn't make it any less of a sacrifice of love).
"Yang and Ruby don't care about each other anymore" can get in the trash along with "they're a sisterhood!" Because they're just excuses to attack the relationship between Blake and Yang.
You love your friends differently than a romantic partner, you love siblings differently too but it doesn't mean you don't love them.
Whether or not Yang throwing herself in harms way was a smart thing to do is debatable but she definitely did it out of love for her little sister. And Ruby acknowledging that Yang raised her and that she would have come looking for her is all I need to know about Ruby's love for her big sis
The difference between siblings and a budding romance should be obvious, but let me explain: Ruby and Yang have known each other forever. Literally neither of them have any memories of a life without the other. When you've had a loving relationship that long and you see each other every day, you don't need the casual displays like hugs and cuddles; you both know, it's okay to leave it implied.
But romance? The growing bond between two girlfriends? They need to reiterate their feelings wherever possible, because they don't want to let the other slip away, forget how much they care. They haven't been together long enough that their love can be implicit, it MUST be explicit.
In conclusion: YANG AND RUBY LOVE EACH OTHER, YOU DINGBATS!!!
This is why I've never understood why people use the "Yeah... Ruby" comment to say Yang does not care about Ruby. It is the complete opposite, Yang is so secure in her relationship with her sister that she knows Ruby will forgive her. This is not the first time they've had a falling out and it may not be the last. But with Blake, it's one of the first times she makes a major decision that lands on the opposite side of of Blake's, and it's clear she's thinking about how hard it was to reconcile after the fall of Beacon. Yang is never worried about her relationship with Ruby. She's only ever deeply worried about Ruby's wellbeing
No but seriously, the fact that Yang thought she was actually in some sort of afterlife after having died protecting her sister and then she sees her team there and is not happy because then that means she didn’t save them and they died anyway. Like, okay, yeah CRWBY just drop that whole load of depression on us.
And the fact that Ruby just walks over and is like “of course we’d come after you, did you forget who raised me?” and it’s totally pointing out that Yang was the parent for a lot of Ruby’s childhood because Summer died in battle (Hound) and Tai shut down and of course if the it had been Ruby who went down first Yang wouldn’t have hesitated to go after her!
Oh my god I was not prepared to have my emotions destroyed this early in the volume!
A small detail that caught my eyes:
It seems Ruby was put into Recovery Position after passing out. Or at least something kinda like that. It’s a minor and incredibly specific pet peeve of mine that no one in fiction ever seems to do that for an unconscious person and just lets them lie there, so it’s nice to see it for once.
In other news, because I can be atrocious at recognizing voices at times, when Ruby woke up I thought the person talking was Cinder for a second.
They definitely moved her because when she fell she hit her head. Here she’s lying on her arm.
I’m not sure the position would get a passing grade in a first aid course, but they definitely did something and didn’t just watch her drop and then sit down without touching her.
I know it sounds romantic if Weiss put Ruby’s head in her lap or something (I love that in fanfics), but that would be risky here. If she was just asleep, sure, go ahead. But she passed out and that’s a medical thing, not romantic.
They moved her into a safer position and sat down to watch over her, it’s all they could do.
But it ain't called love/Without a little tragedy
Been on a Nuts and Dolts kick lately bc I love suffering
