CH. 1: Fresh Face ٠࣪⭑ wc 3.3k CH. 2
“I’m starving,” you think to yourself.
But what you’re hungry for can’t exactly be described. What you’re hungry for, you’re not even sure is a concrete concept. The insatiable feeling has ached inside of you for as long as you could remember, and for all you know, will continue to linger in your chest forever.
There have only been a couple instances when you thought you had come close to satisfying the strange craving, once being when you received the top mark in your class for the first time, and again when you first swam in the ocean— if you could call it that. The latter had come far closer to fulfilling your void.
It was then that you learned who your first love was— or rather— what your first love was.
It was an accident really, an innocent boat ride gone “wrong.” you were 13 and the ocean’s turquoise glistened up at you as if it was calling out to you. The boat wasn’t moving particularly fast, just as your dad had promised your mother, so a life vest, although recommended, was not exactly necessary, at least by your standards. You had ridden in the boat plenty of times and your swimming skills were admirable, there was no reason for you to wear the big ugly thing. It made you look fat, after all.
The waves shined like fractured glass. you leaned closer and closer, taking in the sight, the smell— and apparently swallowing some water.
Suddenly, you weren’t sure what was up or down, all you knew was that the water had filled your ears and the pressure had surrounded every inch of your body. You choked and flailed your arms and legs, struggling as your eyes adjusted to the sting.
Most would have felt suffocated, scared even.
You exhaled what was left in your lungs as your body finally relaxed, sinking deeper. The ocean seemed to extend endlessly with the sunlight eventually dissolving into darkness. This is what you felt. This is what you wanted. It was the longing to know what that darkness held. Finally, you understood it was curiosity that ached inside of you.
Although you almost died, that deep blue abyss became the closest thing you ever felt to peace.
⋆✴︎˚。⋆
One, two, three… you counted , timing the seconds until you could safely flip and turn around for your second lap.
Ever since that day, you decided you would be a swimmer. You had no competitive urge to join the olympics or anything, You simply wanted to become good enough that you would be trusted to swim in the ocean, which involved you joining your school’s team. It was your way of getting free lessons and giving your parents the satisfaction of having a daughter who was not only busy studying, but was busy with her sport.
Most athletes are driven by passion and love for their sport, often leading them to win gold, silver, or bronze medals, but you found the competition to be what you hated—well loved the least about swimming.
You liked to swim. So what? Medal or no medal. You weren’t fueled with fiery rage to outpace the people in the lanes beside me. you had no desire to be the best, to come out on top, or to beat all others who dared to challenge me. You couldn’t care less whether or not you stood on the podium.
“Focus Y/N, you’re slowing down!” you hear your coach yell.
God forbid you get tired.
Although it was summer and your season won’t start again until spring, Your coach liked to give the newbies a chance to learn the basics during the time that varsity didn’t need her utmost attention.
The whistles blew, signalling to everyone the drill was over.
“You alright Y/N?” The boy next to you asks, his voice sweet and sincere.
Jake has always been kind. He’s softspoken, gentle, and the best friend you could ask for, well the best after Iroha. Never would a man be first.
“Yeah, just got a lot on my mind,” you reply, toweling yourself until you feel a yank from the goggles on your head, releasing with a loud snap.
“What the hell, Nicholas!” you don’t even have to turn around to know it’s the boy who prays on your downfall every practice.
“Why so slow today, shrimpy?”
Considering you two don’t even compete against each other, you know, with you guys being different genders and on the same team, Nicholas spends every practice swimming like he has a personal vendetta against you.
He flashes his smile that could make every girl within a 10 foot radius swoon. “Your eyes can’t even comprehend my speed,” you shoot a glare that quickly dissolves into a smile, because underneath his vendetta, you are friends, and he is third on the pyramid.
You all settle into a small circle around our bags as you slide off your goggles and cap, patting your hair dry. “So, are you guys excited for our senior year?” you ask the boys, but are quickly met with gazes that seem to melt into the floor. “my bad for bringing it up…”
“I’m just not ready to see Principal Wang’s face again,” Jake rolls his eyes.
“You’re not excited for the fresh meat?” Nicholas smirks.
“Ew dude, you’re a super senior in the making,” Jake gives his shoulder a light shove.
“I do miss the excitement of new students, new people, but our class is pretty much set in stone now, huh?” you finish packing your things in your bag and you all start making your way to the locker rooms.
“Who knows, maybe we’ll get some transfers and you’ll finally get a boyfriend. That or you settle for an underclassmen.”
You feel your ears heat up at the mention of your love life, or rather, lack thereof. “Nicholas, genuinely what is it with you and underclassmen, you’re creeping me out,” you say in an attempt to draw the attention away from you.
“Just looking out for you honey,” he winks over his shoulder as you go your separate ways into the boys and girls lockers.
This was your dynamic, your circle, and you were content with the way things were.

“Doesn’t it bother you?”
“Does what bother me?”
Iroha fidgets with the magazine before she finally closes it and sits up in the bed. Furrowing her brows in a way that lets you know she’s about to irritate you one way or another.
“Like, don’t you want to have a high school romance before it’s over?” She looks pitifully at you, pouting her lip.
“Why are you suddenly bringing this up?” you sit up to match her eyeline, that pout can only mean danger.
“I’m just saying… you haven’t had a crush on anyone at our school, like, ever, right?”
“No… I haven’t, why?” Clearly, Iroha has something to tell you.
She bites her lip before she speaks.
“Listen… me and Nicho were talking…”
“No.” You already know where this is going
“But—I just think if you give it a chance then you and Jake could be something!” She wines.
“Dude, no. He’s my friend and that’s all that I see him as,” you feel your cheeks heat up, partly from embarrassment and partly from anger. You and Iroha have had this conversation dozens of times and the outcome is always the same.
“But Nicho agrees with me!”
“No, Iroha. Besides, why would I trust Nicholas’ dating advice?” You stand your ground.
"I just want you to be happy, Y/N. I want our senior year to be perfect,” She looks at you from under her eyelashes, easing her way out from underneath the irritation in your glare.
"I am happy, I’m happy with how things are now, there isn’t a thing I would change, okay? We’re bound to have fun this year, I promise,” The ache stings in your best, as if to call you a liar.
It’s not like being nitpicky about your life will get you anywhere, right? Nobody is perfect after all.
⋆✴︎˚。⋆
It’s the first day of school.
Your hair is freshly washed and styled, your nails are done with a simple french tip, and your uniform is pressed and smooth. They’re unnoticeable and insignificant details really, but when returning to the hell hole called school, one has to find joy in the little things.
Luckily, Iroha, Jake and you find yourselves in the same homeroom. Nicholas, however, did not find himself so lucky. His classroom would be right next to yours. Despite the dramatic show he put on about his separation, you know he’ll be fine, he was a people person after all, with several other social circles he rotated in and out of.
It was why you liked him. He treated everyone with the same respect and wittiness no matter who they were, and it allowed him to skip the wariness you always felt when you had met new people. You had no reason to not trust him or feel self-conscious and it put your mind at ease. It was with that same charm that he got along with anyone he came across and allowed him to naturally fit into any environment. His entire demeanor screamed, “Of course I belong here,” and you envied him for it. Although, you would never admit that.
Linked arm in arm, Iroha is ecstatic, walking on a cloud on the way to your new classroom while you seem to be stuck on the ground.
“Together again! We were destined to be together Y/N,” She gives a cute scrunch of her nose in her smile.
“Not even the greatest of forces could separate us,” you squeeze her hand before letting go. Iroha is the cutest and prettiest girl you know, she is sweet, fun, outgoing, and the total opposite of you. Which is exactly why you love her. Her cup isn’t even half full, it’s full to the brim, overflowing with gratitude for even the dullest of moments.
You had been best friends since before you even understood the concept of best friends. Bonded together since your guys’ days in diapers, you and Iroha were stitched together by the hip.
⟢
You almost don’t notice it. The way the air changes as you step into your classroom. You almost miss it, the fresh pair of eyes, dark black hair, and honey white skin that is sitting in the back of the classroom.
You are pulled towards him almost involuntarily, like a magnet. Your legs are moving but you are not thinking. Right now, you feel a pressure in the air similar to that of the water and your body reacts to it like muscle memory.
His beauty is striking. His features sharp, as if they were molded to perfection by Aphrodite herself. Your gaze is anchored to him as you study his glossy black hair that seems to fall perfectly but effortlessly. Your eyes fall to trace the slight furrow of his brows, down to the slope of his nose, and the small pout of his lips. He is utterly hypnotizing.
And you are definitely staring.
Your thigh hits a desk, making you gasp as if you were holding your breath.
This is not the pool.
You glance at Iroha, who is biting back a smile, unsuccessfully by the way, as she grabs your hand to finish what you started and lead you both to your seats.
No…no, no, nonono no.
Iroha is your best girl friend, who stands tall at the top of your pyramid of friends, but she is also your worst enemy.
He glances up at you as you graze his desk and suddenly, you are very interested in the shoes on your feet that apparently have developed a consciousness of their own.
You are now sitting directly behind the fresh face.
The nape of his neck is unbelievably cute— wait a minute— what are you saying right now?
“Good morning students…” Your homeroom teacher walks in while you pay him no attention.
You think that at any second that Fresh Face will turn around and scold you for burning holes into the back of his gorgeous head. But he doesn’t. Instead, he rubs the adorable nape of his neck, as if to politely tell you to look away.
In the corner of your eye you see the massive grin on Iroha’s face, but you don't dare to meet her eyes. Partially out of fear, partially because you can’t bring yourself to pull away.
God, you are crazy.
You force your eyes to pay attention to the teacher that has already started his speech about how important your senior year is.
The day drags on endlessly, the repetition of introductions, syllabi, and expectations is burned into your mind before you’ve even had lunch. Your eyelids begin to fall heavy with sleep, the hours spent getting ready seems to be catching up to you. This mysterious back was covering you anyways, you might as well take advantage of it, right? You blink yourself away into what you tell yourself will be a quick nap.
⋆✴︎˚。⋆
“y/n…”
“…y/n…”
“…Y/N,”
“Y/N!”
Your head jolts up. Your neck aches as you whip around to face the mosquito in your ear.
“It's lunch, let's go!” Iroha's face finally comes into focus.
“I’m going, I’m going!” Half the classroom is gone and so is Fresh Face.
⋆✴︎˚。⋆
“Where’s Jake?” You’ve finally noticed his absence. You and Iroha were now in the lunch line, trays in hand.
“He said he had something to do but that he’ll meet us at our table, oh also!—” She pulls out a small cartoon of apple juice, “—He got these for us, you were asleep though so I drank mine already,” your eyes light up at the sight of the sugary reward for making it to lunch. “Cheers to our senior year,” Your cartoon and her water tap together as you head to your table.
As expected, Nicholas is there waiting at the table you and Iroha had claimed when you were first years, prior to the addition of the guys in your circle. You see another head approaching the table, Jake you presume—who is accompanied by… a third?
“Hey guys, there's someone I want you to meet,” Jake motions to the third as you all sit down.
Fresh Face meets your eyes.
Oh god.
It seems your reaction is reciprocated as he tries to create as much distance from you as the circular table allows. A grimace flashes over his face that disappears so quickly you wonder if you had imagined it, his dimples revealed by his pearly white teeth and… unusually sharp canines replaces the expression just as fast.
“Hi, I’m Heeseung,”
His posture is rigid but confident, his smile warm yet practiced, everything about his demeanor contradicted itself. His deep brown eyes curve into crescent moons, looking up at you with a sheepish smile. You were star struck enough seeing him from a far, but now, you felt as if you were falling into trance gazing into his adorable bambi brown eyes and—
“Hi,” Iroha beams, bubbly and welcoming as always. “I’m Iroha and this is Y/N,” She gestures towards you. Your train of thought that was floating around in space is brought back down to earth, where people don’t just stare at stranger, but greet them with a friendly smile.
“Nice to meet you,” you finally act like the normal human you are—well, should be.
“His family just moved here, I thought I'd invite him to hang with us,” Jake explains like the considerate soul he is.
“Thats actually perfect, Y/N here wouldn’t shut up about how she wanted to meet new people,” Nicholas smirks.
“Yeah well—this town does get pretty boring,” You give an awkward laugh.
“I guess you’re in luck, my brothers will join me soon, they just… caught a cold, so they couldn’t come to school,” Heeseung shifts in his seat, adjusting a hand for his chin to rest, the other moving his food around but not eating it.
“Brothers?” Iroha perks up with curiosity.
“Two, Sunghoon and Niki, Niki’s in the year below us,” He finally sets his fork down.
Iroha’s eyes widened at the possibility, “SoSunghoonisinouryear? Doesthatmeanhe’syourtwin?” As her brain often moves a million miles a minute, her mouth struggles to keep up.
“No, actually, we’re not blood related, we’re more so a result of foster care,”
“Ohh,” the explanation seems to have buffered her trail of thought. You hum in understanding.
“We’ll look forward to it then,” Nicholas looks at you with a teasing grin and an eyebrow cocked up.
⋆✴︎˚。⋆
That night, sleep didn’t come easy to you. Although exhausted by the boredom of school, you tossed and turned in your bed, the mattress too firm and then too soft, the air too cold but your comforter leaving you drenched in sweat. You felt suffocated in the layers between you and your itchy sheets until you finally sat up in frustration.
You decide to go for a walk as you slip on your hoodie and shoes. It was a bit late for a girl to be out by herself, but then again, nothing ever happened in this town. Especially anything that would give you reason to feel unsafe.
The outside air embraces you with a crisp chill, sending a shiver down your spine.
You make your way down your street, dragging your feet lazily until you end up at the convenience store around the corner. The fluorescents hiss at you as you walk in, making you wince at the sudden brightness.
You wait patiently for your turn to check out, sleepily unaware of your surroundings, only focused on how parched your throat was and how yummy the chocolate milk you were holding would be.
“Hey, are you in line or not?” A hooded man in a black mask grumbles from behind you. Quickly, you blink away the drowsiness to pay for your milk.
As you head back towards your house, you can’t help but feel a new heaviness in the air. What was once crisp now feels muggy. The empty street looked exactly the same, filled only by parked cars, the dim glow of the lamposts lining the sidewalk, and you… just you…right? Were you really alone right now?
A crushing weight of uncertainty washes over you, your pace speeds up, still several houses away from where you wish you never left.
“Hurry,” a voice whispers, so quiet you wonder if it was your head speaking to yourself. Definitely not.
You whip your head around, eyes wide and searching in frantic fear. The sudden movement causes you to stumble around your own feet, you fall to the floor as your eyes finally land on the unease that had been following you. Your stomach twists at the sight.
“Whas a little lady like you doing out s’ late,” his words slur, the smell alcohol practically radiating from his breath. He reaches down to yank you back up by your wrist, but his hands don’t leave. They messily slide up your arm, shoulder and neck, until his cradling—no— gripping both sides of your face.
“What a pretty girl you are,”
Trembling, you grab at him, so crippled by fear that simply trying to squirm out of his grasp takes up all your strength.
A shadow creeps up from behind him. It looks human, but the silhouette is so pitch black it can only be inhuman. All you can make out is the sharp white specks—its eyes you reckon, that slowly turn to face the drunken man.
The silhouette’s head digs violently into the bend of the man’s neck, making him let out an agonizing scream. The terror piercing into your ears until they are ringing in silence, darkness, until you are swallowed whole by nothing.

You rip off the covers of your bed, your sheets dampened with sweat, vague memories began pooling in your mind. A restless night, the convenience store, the liquor stained breath of the man, and the shadow. The unsettling thoughts clouded your head as you tried to make sense of it all.
Did you pass out? Did someone bring you home? Was it only a dream?
You shuffle through possible explanations for how you’ve ended up back in your bed. You could’ve sworn you were just under the crushing grasp of that drunk, so how was it that you were here now? Did you sleepwalk? Did you imagine everything? If you had passed out, who brought you? Did your mother find you?
Your mother was the chief of police in Jeonju, if something had happened to you, she would be the first to know.
Your eyes scan your bedroom, searching the nightstand, the floor, your window, anything that might give you a clue as to what happened. Still, everything looked untouched, as if you had never left.
Maybe your parents knew something you didn’t. You descend down the steps to greet them, at least should be home by now.
More often than not, your house was left empty, making it feel like it was inhabited only by you. Of course, your parents still lived there, but it served more as a place to sleep than anything. With your mother, the chief of police, and your father, a nurse, their long work hours forced them to stay late and leave early in the morning, meaning you could go days at a time without properly seeing them.
You’d learn to take care of yourself, cooking your own meals and attending to chores around the house. Despite people being envious of your freedom, you found yourself envious that they were able to see their family on a daily basis, that they didn't have to come home only to be greeted by silence. As nice as freedom was, it was lonely, which is why you spent most weekends and evenings at Iroha’s, or Jake’s when she was busy.
Going out without permission wasn’t exactly uncommon if there was never anyone around to ask, unfortunately, the fact that you had left at 2 am was enough to earn a scolding. Especially by your mother. That, however, was the least of your worries right now. You couldn’t decide what exactly to hope for, an answer that could leave you traumatized and disturbed, or no answer that would leave you seriously wondering if you’ve gone insane.
“Good morning, honey! How’d you sleep?” Your mom looked over her shoulder from the kitchen, spatula in hand, scrambling eggs on the pan in front of her.
“Sorry I couldn’t take you to your last first day, the station got some weird report of an animal attack early in the morning, kept me busy all day," she said, taking the pan off the heat. "Poor girl was mangled, it's a miracle she survived," she raised her coffee filled mug to her lips, tiredness peeking out from under her eyes.
“I'm glad she's okay then." You replied, absentmindedly.
"If it was you, I'd personally kill that animal," she said, a smile tugging at her lips.
"I…” you paused to study her expression that showed no signs of real concern so far. “I couldn’t really sleep last night.” If your mother had known anything, it would’ve been obvious by now. She would be all over you with worry, eventually shifting into a state of fury once she decided you were okay, yet she acted like she would any other morning.
“Oh, really? You were knocked out cold when I got here, I almost checked your pulse,” your mother leaned back against the kitchen counter, setting her cup down.
A sense of doubt washed over you, you almost felt relieved, perhaps you really were dreaming. That, or some strange anti-hero-kidnapper found you and broke into your house just to place you back in bed. Still, how would it know where you lived? And that didn’t explain the weird silhouette and the sight of it doing… whatever it was that it did. Maybe you hallucinated out of fear? And then passed out? Your memories were hazy at best, you needed more information. “What time did you get home?”
“Around 2 am,” your mother replied, blinking back at you innocently.
Suddenly, the puzzle in which you were desperately trying to jam together broke back into all of its bizarre pieces. Nothing was adding up.
A dream. It was definitely a dream, you finally concluded. A nightmare actually, where you also experienced sleep paralysis. Yeah. That’s what it was, a sleep paralysis demon. People had those, right? Gosh, what were you even thinking? Anti-hero-kidnappers? Hallucinations? You knew better than to make such wild theories.
You didn’t notice that your mouth was slightly agape and a furrow had settled on your brows.
“Aren’t you running a little late for school?” Your mother waved a hand to your face, as if to signal you back to earth.
“Huh—Yeah, right. School,” you said, giving your brows a stretch and quickly padding your way out of the kitchen.
⋆✴︎˚。⋆
You slumped into your seat lazily, gently resting your head so as to not ruin your makeup. Your face was extra done up today in efforts to cover up your eye bags and you didn’t want to risk smearing away your hard work. The extra concealer made the rest of your face look bare, which then made your eyes look plain, and then your lips pale, and one thing led after another until you were bordering on a detention from your teacher for cosmetics. You were too tired to care anyway. Your mother had claimed you slept like a baby, but why didn’t it feel like it?
“You okay?” Iroha lowered her face to yours. “Didn’t sleep?”
You let out a weak groan before finally sitting up to face her. “Worse. I had sleep paralysis. I don’t recommend.”
“Aw,” she pouted her bottom lip. “Your face says otherwise,” she leaned in closer and lowered her voice, “are you trying to impress someone?” She said, giving you a wink and began gesturing to the empty desk in front of you with her eyes, her lips pressed tight to hide her smile.
You stared back at her blankly, unamused by her teasing, though stealing a glance at the still empty desk in front of you. After the night you had, you honestly had forgotten all about Fresh Face, who you now knew as Heeseung.
⋆✴︎˚。⋆
the night before
Heeseung beeped in the door code to his house, cursing the lock for being so damn loud. After the old one had rusted away, a digital lock was the only thing he could find. It contrasted the rest of the archaic Lee residence. He didn’t realize how awfully modern Jeonju had become. As convenient as technology was, it was especially irritating lately. CCTV cameras, in particular, were a pain in the ass, they lined practically every street, making them impossible to avoid. Well, impossible for a normal person.
He slid off his shoes carefully, making sure to tiptoe as he walked across the hardwood floors. Usually, he couldn't care less if he woke up his so-called brother, but tonight was different. The house was filled by only a quiet hum of the new AC and completely dark except for the moonlight that spilled in from the windows. It was a good sign, mostly. Although they didn't exactly need it to see, turning on the light was done more out of habit than necessity.
When he finally reached the door handle, he paused. As stealth as he thought he was, he felt the weight of the footsteps creeping up before he heard it.
“Where the hell were you?” A voice hissed, his thick brows tightly knitted together.
Heeseung let out a deep huff as he hung his head, refusing to turn around and instead walking straight into his room like nothing. Sunghoon followed closely behind, shutting the door with the same care as Heeseung just a second ago.
"Answer me," Sunghoon said, forcing Heeseung to turn around by the shoulder. Now they were face to face. Dried blood coated Heeseung's chin and ran down his neck serving as a dead giveaway to where he was, Sunghoon asked anyway. "Care to explain why you're coming home at three in the morning reeking of human blood?" He said quietly, but with a bite in his words that was impossible to miss.
Heeseung swiped at his chin with his sleeve, as if erasing the evidence would somehow make him feel any better. "Look, I'm tired, let's talk about this tomorrow." Though he knew there was no avoiding Sunghoon when he was angry, he had every right to be furious after what Heeseung had just done.
"Bullshit. I bet you're brimming with energy right now. Tell me, does the high you just got feel even better than you remember?" He said, his nose crinkled.
Heeseung's gaze was glued to the floor, unable to meet Sunghoon's eyes. The guilt consumed him. He had just gone against everything they believed in, indulged in what they have sworn off of for decades now. It wasn't like it was for no reason. He didn't do it for his own gain or pleasure. Of course not, that's not who he was. Tonight, something came over him. Not thirst, but something else just as uncontrollable and totally unreasonable. He didn't understand it, why he needed to protect you, but he couldn't resist it either.
"Was it worth whoever you just killed?"
He felt the overwhelming guilt twist into a hostile defense, a need to justify his actions, not only from Sunghoon, but also from his own thoughts. "Was I just supposed to let her get molested? I— Listen, he was hurting her and I stopped him before it got any worse," he snapped, his voice firm.
"Who? Who is her?" Sunghoon scoffed, his irritation shifting towards disbelief.
Heeseung hesitated, he had basically just outed himself as a stalker, but there was no going back. "This girl that I met at school." His initial resistance faded into a barely audible confession. He wasn't lying, the shame in his voice was apparent enough for Sunghoon to realize that. "When I saw her today I just—I got this feeling that I had to make sure she was safe."
Sunghoon sighed deeply, bringing a hand up to the center of his furrowed brows. "Heeseung, now's not the time to become infatuated with some human." He knew all too well that relationships with humans never ended well.
"I'm not infatuated!" Heeseung yelled, more out of frustration than anger.
"Keep your voice down," he gritted his teeth, "I don't need Ni-ki to wake up and see you like this. He's barely recovered from what happened."
Heeseung swallowed. Sunghoon was right, it wasn't fair for him to come home covered in the exact thing Ni-ki was working so hard to avoid. "I'm sorry. It was a gut feeling, okay?" A thick silence settled between them. "Is he okay to go to school tomorrow?"
Sunghoon's expression softened, the excuse was acceptable for now. "We'll see how he feels when he wakes up. It wasn't easy for him, you know? You forget how hard newborns have it." The once heated tension had dissolved into mutual understanding.
"Now go shower, I could smell you before you even walked in."
Heeseung gave a silent nod. He had told you and your friends that his brothers were sick, which wasn't a total lie. Ni-ki was really sick, in a way.
He had come home completely ruined, just hours before they were supposed to leave for school. He was out on a run when he came across a girl being drained of her blood and her life. Compared to Heeseung and Sunghoon, Ni-ki was barely a rookie to containing his hunger around humans. Let alone a human that was actively bleeding out in front him. The smart option was to run the other way, stay out of it, and avoid the mess of a vampire-surviving human all together. It was an unspoken rule for vampires to stay out of each other's business after all. But it was also the selfish option, and that Ni-ki wasn't.
Eliminating her attacker was difficult, there was no denying that. Once a vampire starts to feed, its his mission to drink every last drop no matter what or who gets in his way. But what had to come after was infinitely harder for Ni-ki. The girl was perfectly vulnerable, still alive and plump, yet weak enough to show little resistance. It was like she was being served to him on a silver platter.
It took an immense amount, if not all, of his energy to resist her. He had forced himself to go against his most basic instincts, something neither Heeseung nor Sunghoon could have done when they were newborns themselves. It was unnatural to say the least. Just as humans can die of dehydration, Ni-ki made it back home just in time before collapsing under the pressure of the hunger. Sunghoon, in all of his years, had never seen anything like it. It was a truly admirable deed, one in which Ni-ki's body and mind would have to pay the consequences of.
⋆✴︎˚。⋆
It was as if he knew you were looking for him, because just then, Heeseung walked in. This time with another unfamiliar face following behind him.
The boy walked and carried himself with a confidence parallel yet entirely different than that of Heeseung. His eyes were black and cold while Heeseung's were brown and inviting. His skin was pale white, marked only by two moles, one on the side of his nose bridge and one under his eye. He had a head full of hair so black it seemed to absorb the light, and was parted so that it only slightly fell over his eyes. However, above all else, his thick, dark brows that rested in a natural furrow were his most notable feature. Beautiful was an understatement.
Sunghoon stood tall, his eyes scanning the room as he walked while Heeseung's stayed close to the ground below him. Until they landed on you, lingering just a beat longer before switching to Iroha next to you. He gave a warm smile, something unreadable flickering on his face as his eyes met yours again, disappearing just as fast as it came
"Hi, uh, this is the brother I mentioned—if you remember, Sunghoon," he said as he took his seat, sitting sideways so that his back didn't face you.
"Nice to meet you guys," Sunghoon's stoic demeanor was broken by a large grin that made the corners of his eyes crinkle, he was charming enough to make any girl's heart flutter. "Is this seat taken?" He gestured to the desk next to Heeseung. You shook your head no.
Iroha was starstruck, you could tell by the way her lips slightly gaped open, it was a rare occurrence for a blabbermouth like her to be left speechless. In fact, you realized she was not the only one, the loud morning chatter that usually filled the classroom had died down to soft murmuring with the occasional giggle. Each clique was stealing not-so-discreet glances at him, even the boys. Sunghoon must be used to turning heads where-ever he went, because he remained nonchalant despite the obnoxious scene.
An awkward silence fell between you four, it was always Iroha's job to lead the conversation, and right now you were feeling about ready to fire her. So, you elbowed her where you were thankfully hidden by the desk, in the ribs.
"Hi!" Her buffer finally loaded, "I'm Iroha and this is Y/N. We're best-friends." She smiled sweetly at him while wrapping her harms around you in a too-tight hug, her head leaning on your shoulder. You raised your hand as high as her embrace allowed you to, greeting the two boys with a small wave.
⋆✴︎˚。⋆
As your math teacher started to bore on about limits and continuities, you saw Sunghoon lean in to whisper something incoherent to Heeseung.
"Yes, now shut up," was all you make out from their hushed conversation. You averted your eyes as fast as humanly possible when he looked over his shoulder.
⋆✴︎˚。⋆
When lunchtime arrived, half of you expected Heeseung and his brothers to join you and your circle, while the other half expected them to congregate on their own. Part of you hoped you would meet the younger one he had mentioned, because even if they weren't related by blood, you were curious to see if he were just as handsome.
"I invited Heeseung again, but he said Ni-ki, the younger one, gets shy," Jake spoke as he worked the food in his mouth.
"Bummer, I was wondering if he was pretty too," Iroha said, looking genuinely disappointed.
"Hey, Jake and I are just as pretty," Nicholas threw his hands up in a joking offense.
"Sure you are," She rolled her eyes at his arrogance.
"Look, there they are," you pointed at the three walking into the lunchroom.
Iroha's eyes immediately zeroed in on the mysterious third brother, "Oh, he has good bone structure."
"I like his hair," Nicholas said, he always appreciated alternative styles, Ni-ki's blonde hair with black roots and tips was right up his alley.
You couldn't help your stare as they sat down. Together, they were so striking they made the rest of the cafeteria look dull and plain. You watched as they exchanged conversation, until Ni-ki's gaze met yours. It sent a shiver down you spine, his glare was captivating and paralyzing, giving you a feeling that you couldn't quite put your finger on. It reminded you of your horrific dream, making your skin crawl.
"I wouldn't go for a younger guy though," Iroha interrupts your train of thought.
"What about you, Y/N?"
Your head snapped back to your table, settling on Jake. "Huh?"
"Would you date one of them?" He said, his tone wasn't teasing or joking, he was asking you a sincere question.
"How can I answer that when I don't even know them?" You shrugged off the flush that was surely rising up your neck and around your ears.
Jake was pleased with your answer, though you didn't notice as your attention returned to the table where the three remained, poking at their trays. There was something odd about them.
⋆✴︎˚。⋆
Iroha's volleyball practice started today, so you decided to spend the afternoon at Jake's. It felt more like home than your own house. To you, his family was perfect, cookie cutter if you will. A mom and dad that valued eating home cooked meals at the dinner table together, and his gorgeous border collie, Layla. It was no secret that you enjoyed seeing her more than hanging out with Jake.
The TV lit up the room, leaving a gentle glow onto your's and Jake's sprawled out bodies on the couch. Your feet rested on his lap as you laid sideways, petting Layla who was just underneath you at the foot of the couch. The aroma of his mom's cooking spread all the way from the kitchen into your noses. It was a totally relaxing environment.
Except, you couldn't bring yourself to relax, you couldn't bring yourself to forget about everything that was still racking your brain and begging to be made sense of. Your mind replayed your dream over and over, even the way Ni-ki had made your blood run cold with just one look. Heeseung, Sunghoon, all of them felt like pieces to your imaginary puzzle. The feeling bubbled in your stomach and refused to leave. You didn't quite understand why, but you wanted to know more, you needed to.
