“ chai ! ” she offered him a moderate smile as she waved at him from her table. “ you wouldn’t mind having lunch with me, would you ? i would love to hear recommendations from a local. if you only don’t mind, i don’t want to bother you. ” [ @prxncechai ]
“ i don’t want to encourage reckless behaviour but i have to say when i heard you were around, i expected to find the romanovs’ houses ruined or something of the same caliber. ” her hug is brief and one armed --- she has a glass in her hand. “ you’ve matured, haven’t you ? ” [ @aarnc ]
“ what do you think of a celebratory girls’ night out now that you’re back with us ? if my memory is not lying to me, you have told me that i need to get out more. this is the perfect reason. ” [ @nylvne ]
“We should talk—” She didn’t mean to sound vague, knowing those words held nerve-wracking connotation. Juliana didn’t want the conversation to be serious either — her friendship with Mirjam came before any arranged marriage. “—about Reggie. Honestly, I don’t want to marry him, and I’m certain he feels the same toward me. The parliament must’ve picked a Zulu bachelor due to the size of their family; other than that, I don’t see us having a profitable nor enjoyable marriage. Thoughts? Your opinion is important to me.”
mirjam tensed. it had been easy to avoid juliana the past month. her complex feelings for reggie made her feel like a terrible friend. it didn’t matter what juliana said, it just didn’t feel like acceptable behaviour on her part. “ i uh--- ” she cleared her throat and fixed her posture. “ i don’t think i can give you a really unbiased opinion. ” whatever she’d say, it’d be affected by her history with the fiance. she was quiet for a beat before letting out a sigh and massaging her face. “ arranged marriages are bad. even if it weren’t reggie, i don’t think you should go through with it. if you can get out, i would. ”
He hadn’t had good alcohol for a long time. The cheap bars he frequented back home had alcohol that barely gave you a buzz which resulted in you coming back for more and ultimately paying more, so the change in quality was a welcome surprise. Legs propped up on the table, he let his head slump backwards. “I’d like to think that there’s no last call at a place like this.”
she felt like she had seen the scene once or twice before. a lonesome man with too much money and an insatiable thirst. it was a sad look, truly. mirjam arched a brow and hummed softly. “ even if there isn’t, it’s always better to leave by 1 am. you save yourself a lot of trouble that way. ” she offered him a sad smile.
a special shoutout to julie for fact checking and in general getting me through this thing

Estonia becomes part of the Russian empire when Sweden loses The Great Northern War. Estonian civil rights improve with time, enlightenment swept through Estonia, estophilia dwelt in the hearts of the people. When Estonian nationalism became too big of a movement, the russification period began in the late 1800s. Newspapers were censored, art was controlled, university of Tartu began teaching in Russian.
early 20th century
occupation & the treaty of tartu
Estonia declares independence at the end of the First World War. The hold the Russian empire had on Estonia has weakened. The Red army however tries to occupy Estonia and the Estonian War of Independence is fought. USSR recognizes the independence in 1920 and the Treaty of Tartu was signed.
era of independence

The first decade of independence is spent on improving the Estonian society. Education is made more accessible, Estonian language flourishes, and the economy grows. The political situation changes and slowly Estonia transforms into an authoritarian state.
second world war
how the soviet state of estonia came to be
Despite signing a non-aggression pact with both Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union, Estonia gets occupied. The reason for this is the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact. Estonia fell under the rule of USSR in 1940 but was occupied by the Nazis from 1941 to 1944.
post war era
what life was like in the soviet estonia
A big considerable amount of ethnic Estonians are deported to Siberia. It’s a good demonstration of the way Estonians are scared into compliance. While culture begins to thrive in Estonia after the war, carefree life is rather unattainable. Not even money kept you safe, if anything it put a target on your back. Espionage was a common thing, you had to watch what you said.

the fall of the soviet union brought changes
Estonia regains its de facto independence after the fall of the Soviet Union. Laws are edited to fit the current state. Russian immigrants are forced to choose a nationality.

fun facts !
Most people can speak Estonian and Russian, and majority of the younger generation Estonian, Russian and English. Important: Estonian is not a Slavic language. Don’t get it mixed, people will get offended. Skype was developed by Estonians. Estonia is the least religious country, only 20% of the population practice a religion. Has a sport called ‘kiiking’ where people do a 360o on a swing:
the door opened to reveal a- to say the least- disheveled reggie. he’d now have to catch up on the work nylane left behind for him, and to add on to it, he’d managed to leave a mess to deal with at new years. he inhaled a sharp breath, nodded, and opened the door for her to walk in. after a few moments of silence, enough to gather something to say, he spoke, “ i’m SORRY- for intruding on your life like that. it’s not my place. “
“ that’s--- you don’t have to apologize. ” it was a good thing he did though otherwise mirjam wouldn’t have walked into the apartment. she kept her hands tightly clasped together as she leaned against the wall of his front hall. “ i don’t even know vitor, ” she admitted, too embarrassed to look at reggie. “ i just--- yeah, you pissed me off with your questions. ”
“No, the King felt it was important to continue this tradition at a time like this. Lithuania needs stability and strong leadership.” He sounded like he was reciting a line which he sort of one. It was a quote from the King had given over the summer when the adoption at been announced. Domas was surprised a little offended by her question. “Of course, I’m taking it seriously. I take everything I do seriously. This is the best thing for the country and I am doing my duty just as my siblings are.”
“ and that’s achieved by giving the power to someone who wasn’t voted into the office ? ” she should’ve toned it down. she was well aware of it. but everything had an expiration date and lithuatian monarchy’s future sure had one in mirjam’s opinion. “ of course. sorry. my bad. ” he definitely wasn’t lying: he seemed touchy about the subject. it meant that he cared. “ so you’re saying you are the best thing for the country ? ”
“Well, I thought it was about time I made an appearance. It seems that people have gotten used to the idea of us in Lithuania, so now the rest of the world can.” He hummed and offered a small, crooked smile to Mirjam. “I’ll be staying, yes. This seems like a much more useful place to be. And it takes time to get used to this sort of thing, I gather.”
“ i have to say... i was expecting lithuania to just give up on monarchy. it would have seemed like a pretty natural transition. ” she shrugged. it was hard to say if the new heir were just nationalistic or just opportunists. “ i wouldn’t know. ” her situation could not be compared to the prince’s. “ are you going to take your new job seriously ? it seems like a bit of a joke. the whole situation. ”
“my stylist wanted something extravagant, but i didn’t want to deal with all the bells and whistles,” she smiles, “i didn’t want to draw attention away from the bride, either. i always try to dress down at these kinds of events, if i can.”
“ that’s only smart. i think some of these outfits border on unacceptable. too much fabric... too little fabric. i could never pull off these outfits. even yours, i think i’d be scared of a wardrobe malfunction. ”
“ so it took a wedding to get the crown prince of lithuania to join us, ” mirjam noted with mild curiosity. “ are you going to stick around or trust your sister ? ” ( @dcmvs )
“ that dress is really chic. ” and the princess wore it well. “ most people here decided to wear something extravagant. you stick out in a good way. ” ( @alinasoletskaya )
