Icarus Flew

His Royal Highness Aleksander Magnús Magnusson of Iceland Icarus Fell. With the wind in his hair and wax burning his skin, he cried out with unrestrained joy. He was drunk on freedom and high on the open air. Olympus shivered at the sight: A dying boy with hunger in his eyes and teeth bared to the sky. Icarus fell. He was not sorry. He was not afraid. Even when the unforgiving sea embraced him for the last time. Icarus fell, yes, but it was clear that mattered not to him, because before he fell, Icarus Flew.

Aleksander watched the staff as they flocked towards a new group of royals that had just arrived and couldn’t help but turn his nose up in disgust. He knew he shouldn’t be so harsh. These were his people, but a part of him didn’t want to admit that. “I bet they get tired of doing that every time someone shows up.” He tilts his head to the side and continues watching. “I bet they go home thanking god they don’t have someone new to kiss up to.” @genevievc​

"The problem is,” Aleks began, fingers tapping against the table. “People don’t know what the word ‘no’ means.” He mused, thoughts racing as he thought of his last conversation with his father. “No means no and people need to get it..” He huffed, fingers clasping his glass and swallowing the amber liquid. People certainly needed to learn the word ‘no’, himself included. But, what could be expected of someone who had a silver spoon in his mouth since an infant. His dark gaze shot to his drinking companion before sighing. “I guess thats what I get for getting myself in this mess.” @frvncicc​

"I'm trying to be quiet." He sighed, at the woman who had come out from the sidelines into the main lobby of the resort. He was well aware of what time it was and his drunken haze had disappeared now, and all he knew was that the concierge was giving him dirty looks and the remaining guests in the lobby had looks of disgust as Aleksander tried to quietly get back to his sisters villa. “You’d think after all the drunken stupors that I’ve managed to get myself into, I’d learn the art of being quiet in the wee hours of the morning.” @irenaemilija​

Arabella was standing in the resort lobby, waiting for the concierge to give her a list of good restaurants nearby. Right when she looked up from her phone that she was earlier scrolling through her, she spotted a familiar face. It has been a year since she last saw him but she still was able to match a name with his face. “Aleksander Magnusson.”, she said once he was close enough to hear here. “I had a feeling you were bound up to show up here one day but why?”     ( @gloriaetinferni​ )

For the past year and a half, he'd been used to dive bars and cheap motels he'd used to crash at to sleep off hangovers and whatever high he’d managed to get himself on. So, the jump back into this extravagant world where people bowed to him as he passed and mumbled welcoming words made him uneasy even though this was something he had grown up in. A familiar voice had him turning to look backwards. A slow grin spread across his face. “I tend to be like a bad smell; always coming back. My father sent me. Plus, I’ve heard there’s fairly decent booze around here.”

“Aleksander, I’m glad you’re here. I was hoping to talk to you.” Talk meant so many things when Michael said it. It could be a discussion on politics. A drink at a bar. A session where all he does is listen as someone expresses their feelings. Or something like a dressing down from a commanding officer. He expected it to be something like the latter this time. “How is Iceland? Are you finally getting signs of Spring?” @gloriaetinferni​

He'd hoped the small private bar in the resorts library would remain vacant, but when he heard the familiar voice and the words ‘we need to talk’ his spine instantly stiffened and his movements stilled. “Nice to see you again, Michael.” He called out, crystal glass gripped firmly between his fingers. “Small signs of it. The temperature is rising again and the nights aren’t as long.”

She kept to herself and liked to keep a low profile. The last thing she needed right now was to get into trouble. She had been warned several times by her family that it would only take one more scandal before the Welsh people lost all faith in her as a future ruler. “Right? It’s hard to stop, isn’t it?” And that was exactly how she ran into problems. “That makes two of us, actually. My reputation isn’t the best, but I think they’re too afraid of me to tell me no,” she said, a laugh escaping her lips. “You’re Aleksander, yes?” 

He hummed. It was certainly a vice he hadn’t expected to get into as heavily as he had. Previously, it had been cigarettes, sneaking out and partying and now he drowned in his own self caused misery with alcohol. “Unfortunately I need someone to tell me no, because I haven’t been told it enough.” It was a sad thought to come to, but growing up he hadn’t exactly ever really been told ‘no’  and it was something that he expected now; to go on with no cares in the world. “I am. I have to apologize, though, seeing as I cannot put a name to your face.”

Rhiannon had worked hard to reduce her alcohol consumption, but every once in a while, she gave in and had a drink or two. Hearing someone speak, she looked up from her whiskey sour and quirked a brow. She recognized him as the Prince of Norway. She had always been very good at remembering who was who when it came to other royals. “I don’t think there is…but I’m sure they can cut you off,” she commented before raising her glass to her lips and took a sip. “Although, if you have the money or notoriety they’ll probably look the other way.” 

He didn’t notice that he had a guest with him on the back patio of the, but when he looked up a head of caramel hair, blue eyes and a similar crystal glass to his own. “That’s too bad.” He mused, swirling the amber liquid in his glass. “I haven’t had good liquor like this for a while.” He snorted. “I have the money, but my notoriety isn’t exactly a picture perfect one and is something that many people have yet to forget.”

“Well, honest mistakes can’t be avoided,” Leonor muttered a bit quietly. Her latest appearance had been during the low point of her year. “It takes some practice and a lot of free time. See, I’m one of the vermin who actually buy those tabloids. It’s 20% about research and 80% about keeping up with the juiciest gossip.”

He nodded in agreement. “I suppose so.” He wished it were true with everyone, but Aleks seemed to make as many honest mistakes as he did an un-honest one. He grinned. “I am unfortunately a rather impatient person and can never be bothered to put in the practice. Are you one of those people who enjoy people watching at the beach?” He questioned, chuckling slightly.

she felt like she had seen the scene once or twice before. a lonesome man with too much money and an insatiable thirst. it was a sad look, truly. mirjam arched a brow and hummed softly. “ even if there isn’t, it’s always better to leave by 1 am. you save yourself a lot of trouble that way. ” she offered him a sad smile.

Head lifting and gaze shifting upwards, his dark gaze met another dark gaze and he shrugged. “That’s too bad then, though, you sound as if you’re speaking from experience?” He questioned. “I always seem to be in trouble.” Aleksander mused, words not exactly unintelligible, but still slurred. He knew he wasn’t exactly making a good first impression, but the expectations Aleks had for even himself were low.

He hadn't had good alcohol for a long time. The cheap bars he frequented back home had alcohol that barely gave you a buzz which resulted in you coming back for more and ultimately paying more, so the change in quality was a welcome surprise. Legs propped up on the table, he let his head slump backwards. “I’d like to think that there’s no last call at a place like this.”

maybe it was something strange about phuket, or maybe it was just the distance between her and reykjavik, but natasja had felt a little more settled than she usually did when she was in town. her and vita had just been there weeks ago, and she had finally stopped getting hives every time she thought of facing her father again. and now with aleks there, the thought of going home was front and center and natasja was starting to panic just a little bit. 

“the truth comes out!” natasja exclaims, “i wish the icelandic press was here to see that - maybe they’d stop acting like i’m still a child if they knew that,” nat jokes. the two glasses she’d grabbed clink together as she leads aleks towards the patio. she hears him and she gives him a strange look, “it’s sweet, but it also sounds like you ate a hallmark movie.” she jokes, then she smiles and replies, “love you, too.” she pauses, looking at him, “wait - do you have a place to stay? i have… several rooms here, if you need a place to sleep. plus, it’s probably cheaper on our taxpayers if we share a villa.” 

"They're ruthless dogs and will take whatever is thrown to them and run with it." He sighed, thinking of the press back home. Dogs might be putting it nicely, but they were willing to do anything to get a story. Trash talk his sister, slander his own name (which he had everything to do with and no one to blame but himself), and one of these days it would be taken to a new level, and he wasn’t particularly ready to deal with that new level.

 Following her outside, Aleksander pushed a hand through his dark hair; moving the dark strands away from his face as the wind blew it. “I can bullshit you with anything.” He grinned, hoisting himself on to the patio banister. “It might be the only thing that I’ve retained from my schooling because ‘bullshit baffles brains’” He smiled, tilting his face up towards the setting sun. “No. Father said he’d set me up with an apartment, but if you’re offering to put up with me for my time here, I’m not going to say no.”

Imma head off for a bit to study for my exams, but I should have an open starter for Aleksander posted after. Also, please let me know if you’ve got wanted connections to be taken up.. I’m hardcore thinking of taking up another character even though I’ve just gotten here, but I have no self control, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

“i know,” natasja’s voice drops, almost a whisper. she was needed, to go along with whatever plan the old man had cooked up in his head since she’d left. but she couldn’t do it anymore. she knew what she wanted and what her father wanted were two parallel lines that could never meet. she was exhausted, frankly. she thrived when she was working too hard, and lately work assignments coming from her father had been few and far between.

natasja tries to stare dead at him for more than a few seconds, but she can’t and she breaks into a smile. “ah, so you’re just here to see me, then. i knew you couldn’t get anything done without me around,” she jokes. it’s easy to pick out the glasses from the cabinet and grab whichever bottle of wine barbie had brought around a few weeks ago. “there’s nothing like final a sunset when you know you won’t see the sun for a long time,” her smile turns almost wistful, “at least we had the lights to keep us company in the dark.”

Aleksander listened to her voice drop and for the first time since he’d started slacking off, he really and truly heard what he was putting her through; what their ailing father was putting her through. He should feel bad, and there was that feeling deep inside, but he also know she’d do this so much better than he ever would. He knew that their father was practically working her to the bone most times and then brushing her off the next, and he knew it wasn’t fair and he sincerely hoped that he figured that out.  

His brows rose and a slow smile crept across his face, mimicking hers.”Of course I did. I can only put up with father so long and his demands, and its took you this long to figure that out?” He joked. He knew it was kind of sad; that his younger sister looked after her older more so than the other way around, but that’s how it had been between him and Natasja for as long as Aleks could remember. His dark eyes watched her for a moment before he hopped off the counter. “You’ll always have me to keep you company, Nat... even if the lights aren’t there...”
