honestly tenna still being that excited and whimsical and hopeful about things is such an interesting trait of his like. the way he words things sounds like he did them himself (see: that golden tenna statue) but i don't think he's really getting anything in return at that point? no one watches him, he stands out from the other darkners in tv world, and throughout ch3 it's obvious he's worried about not getting things right. yet he still does these things anyway, he still gets excited, yes he's distracting the fun gang but you can tell he's actually having fun putting something on for some semblance of an audience again. the signs of distress show up when he has to do things he knows will bore them (rounds upon rounds with no end in sight) because it goes against what he knows works well. then he gets Cleaved Red By Blade and though in castletown he's more subdued, he's still actively seeing the more positive side of things. whether that's because he's in denial of what his state is or he's trying to move on or is hoping things still change is up for interpretation, but honestly if anyone was in his position i think it would be understandable if they would have given up hope far far earlier. yet he hasn't.

but then again it's like. is he only doing that because he doesn't want to acknowledge the more uncomfortable feelings he has? because a tv shouldn't feel that way right? and susie gave him hope and the kids gave him a home and yes he almost died but he isn't dead so really he should be happy, right? and it's like if you think about it, who does he even have to talk to about these things with anyway if he wanted to? i like thinking a lot about how tenna as a character is also, evidently, a glaring caricature of a celebrity diva. then as that kind of character who does he have to talk to about this? mike, who isn't even really mike, who he feels is playing pretend with him to appease him and might even be upset with him? the kids, who have bigger things to worry about than him and also might not even like him? his employees who he seems to have a strained relationship with? all his family disappeared, his friends vanished or changed as he knew them, and he's still making silly poses and sprinkling his word art into his sentences but i do wonder if it's a desperate attempt to wrap something ugly up into a neat bow.
