MISFITS #30 - Are You Loud Enough?
written by @grilledgleesus and @alexhedgefox extra supervision by @moonbear-from-space
30 whole comics! I really wasn't sure if I'd get this far, but here we are. I have another 10-ish in the works at different stages, so I don't see myself stopping anytime soon. I know this is only the second appearance of Ash in 30 comics, that's my bad. Both her and Jesse have gone underutilized until lately. Also, yes, I know the seating location for Andrea abruptly changes between panels a few times, but that didn't really occur to me until I was in lineart. At that point, I was either leaving it alone or abandoning the whole thing, which I felt was overkill for something so menial. Not everything has to always line up perfectly, it's a cartoon. also drawing auditorium seating is a bitch. not much changed from these second pass sketches, but I'm including them anyway, because I keep forgetting to
MISFITS #29 - Saturday Night Five
did you know that today is a saturday night? did you ALSO know that it's the fifth month of the year?? did you know we came up with the title first, and that's just an absolutely insane coincidence???
it may seem like comics have slowed down, but I've genuinely never been more active on making things. I'm working on a handful of more ambitious comics right now, so it's taking a bit longer to get them out. right now, I've got about 10 potential comics in various stages, which makes me so happy to be able to do
MISFITS #28 - Driven Miss Bail-y
fun fact! this was originally just panels 1 - 3, and I had the idea for panel 4 maybe a few hours before posting
MISFITS #27 - Aw, Rats!
MISFITS #26 - Pixel Brain
Fun fact! I finished this one way back in February, and then put it off for a bunch of very random reasons. It's also the last one I did prior to making model sheets
Also, the sketches! I usually don't stray far from my sketches now because I tend to do a lot of cleanup on them (unless I'm doing some radical new pose, then I try to keep the sketch loose)
MISFITS #25 - Foolish In April
Misfits, now with 50% more voices! also, this is the first time I've had to do a proper drawing of myself in a good long while. The goal is to get all these comics dubbed with a full cast, and the gears are turning on that! but in the meantime, here's one that was easy to record, considering it was just myself and my fellow co-creator as fictionalized versions of ourselves in a sorta fictionalized look behind the curtain. gee I sure do love the word fictionalized also, for those who would rather just read the darn thing:
OC sketches from february I forgot to post. oops
MISFITS #24 - The Doctor Is In
The last few comics, I've been trying harder to make things a little more consistent visually. Not that the older strips looked bad, but I think you can usually tell when I put more time into being more "on-model"; trying to level that out at a constant level.
This is the first strip I've done since making model sheets/turnarounds, and I genuinely do think it's helped to keep things consistent. No more "wait, did I give Terra a button on her jeans in the last comic?" situations anymore!
The sketches have stayed pretty close lately, and that's largely me being really comfortable in my art program and my style by this point. Also, putting a lot more time and effort into making and cleaning up the sketches means less guesswork at the line art stage, which I like.
new header! felt like it was time for an update that included the full cast (Alex and I had discussed a different, simpler update, but I kept forgetting to add it and then eventually just made this one anyway)
MISFITS #23 - Ménage à Quoi?
and because I've been forgetting to post them recently, the sketches! didn't stray too far from them, but still offering anyway. I'm also including a full version of the picture in Alex's hands, because I did fully draw that.
MISFITS #22 - Rental Ruckus
plus, a rough version of the final panel! the other panels changed very little
Happy Holidays! Terra, Cole, and Alex are doing a little last minute Christmas shopping, don't mind them..
MISFITS #21 - Strife With A Knife
It's funny to think that Maddie used to be the most adjusted, level-headed character - but I'll be honest, I just wasn't having fun with that creatively. This "quick on her feet conwoman with an angle" change surely seems strange to anyone who's been around long enough to remember the original Maddie - but considering how rarely I used her, that number isn't higher than five.
It is also worth noting that what you're seeing in these comics isn't the full depth of these characters; you just can't get that much into less than 10 panels. I've been scripting proper cartoons for what feels like forever, but what the comics do get is the core comedic aspect of their personalities.
Here's Misfits comic #20; all that's left to say is Happy Thanksgiving!
Here's Misfits comic #19!
New characters keep popping up in these, and I'll take accountability for not doing proper introductions in some form. But I've been working on a simple way to do that for it's own post, hoping I'll work that out sooner than later. Anyway, this is Ash; she's from the UK. Obviously she has more going on than that, but putting it here is kinda silly when, again, I'm planning that character post for relatively soon.
No panel for panel sketches for this one (they're remarkably similar to the final product), but I'm including a few alternate takes we did both Alex and I thought were trying too hard to be overly wacky. Which I know sounds silly for a comic, but I dunno, neither of us were really feeling it.
Here's Misfits comic #18, the last of a connected series of three!
I really enjoyed the creative process that came with having a theme to tie a few together. It makes the world feel a little bigger, and gives me (and my creative partner, not active on Tumblr) the freedom to write a loose "story", a thing. Don't be surprised if it happens again at some point!
I'm also including two different versions of the sketches. The first is a very rough version, just to get the idea down. The second is a more fleshed out version, much closer to the final; although there were still dialogue changes down the line.
