They're missing the most important one: "Minutes Slack is green".
Turns out you can roll a 7 on a d6
but only once.
@friendlyneighborhoodmadscientist
Question for the GMs out there: Do you count this roll as:
a) Cocked. Get new die and roll again.
b) 7.
c) A superposition of 6 and 1. You start a new game in parallel to the current one and apply the result of the 6 in one game and the 1 in the other.
Happy Valentines Day!
Here are some programming valentines day cards!
Couldn't find any good ones online, so made my own heh, enjoy and send it to someone who likes corny jokes and/or programming!!
This is what my grumpy ass does when I see these:
"are you a concept? because without you I just <runtime error>"
So I'm just your safety net now?
"are you a meta tag? cause I can't get you out of my head"
Great, so I'm all the bloated, useless, extraneous information?
"are you CSS? cause you got class"
So I'm a nightmare to work with and impossible to center?
"you've stolen the ASCII to my heart" (that's just a pun, not even a real joke)
Oh just grow up and use emojis like everyone else.
"fork my heart because I'm ready to commit"
If you were really ready you would have committed on main.
"you had me at hello world"
Oh really, the most basic bitch, unoriginal line ever?
"let's connect"
So this is a booty call 'cause you suddenly want something at 2am?
"if I were a method you'd be my parameter 'cause I'll always need you"
So if I leave you're going to error out and burn the whole program down?
"we can merge without conflicts"
Our branches diverged too long ago for that to be true.
"it works on my end"
Don't try to excuse your poor performance.
"no matter how I sort things you'll always be first"
That's just a broken sort function.
"you are my 127.0.0.1"
Call me when you're ready to commit to an IP.
The older I get, the more I want to take my computer and:
-Move to a farm and grow produce and raise chickens
-Live by the river and protect the fish from jackasses who don’t treat rivers with respect.
-Build a cabin in the middle of the woods.
I yearn to exist with a sapphic lover, with my code, in the middle of open space where the responsibilities of the mundane to not weigh upon me. I yearn to be my father who truly said fuck it and did this thirty years ago.
Anyways. Stardew Valley is escapism.
Something about the line "I yearn to exist with a sapphic lover, with my code, in the middle of open space" resonated with me like an extended chord with one wrong note, echoing in an empty cathedral.
It made me think about how I exist with my code. Is it the burden that I have to bear until the time when I can put it down to fully focus on my art? Or is the code just another expression of my art, the same impulses in a different medium?
I thought about this a while and came to the conclusion that, for now, my code is a burden. But perhaps sometime in the future, when I am building something that *I* want to build for reasons that *I* choose, all that resentment will slough away and I'll realize that the art was there the whole time.
The aesthetics of capitalism will always be something so cold and inhuman. It’s a type of obvious manifestation of its evil that even most other awful ideologies avoid. It’s an ideology of pure dehumanization more then anything in history, and thus seeks to remove anything that feels human from the world.
Thanks to a lottery-odds big break, a reasonable helping of talent, and more than a little overemployment (I didn't set out to be OE, I was going to quit because of my stupid fucking manager but the new job has shit health benefits and I found I could do them both at the same time) I actually managed to join the elite club of American Homeowner last year.
My new living room has built-in bookshelves. When I put all my books up and added a bunch of LED candles I actually cried. It was the first time I had a space that was unapologetically me. I don't understand people that can live in a space and that space says nothing about them except "I'm rich and I want people to know it".
This is 100% true. I call it my Lesbian Privilege™. I can stare at any woman's chest until the force of my gaze starts burning a hole in her top and she'll remain completely oblivious the entire time.
If I can find the courage, one of these days I'm going to see just how far I can push it. So if you see me out in the wild, motorboating my waitress, just remember that I'm doing it for science.
weird how the vitriol/"stay in your lane"/"puts me off the character entirely" is never aimed at fenris or lucanis (or blackwall, or garrus, etc.) - just isabela/neve/josephine hmmm
could it be. misogyny
Or, and try to follow me here, it could have something to do with the massive, raging entitlement of the same sorts of people who demand that all video game character be "playersexual".
It's pretty blisteringly ironic that people whose personalities revolve entirely around who they want to sleep with demand that the characters in their game not be allowed this crucial part of their identity.
It's worse because the reason they deny them that is so they don't have to fear rejection from whichever character they've decided is going to be their love interest, much like a stalker latching on to a target.
That character MUST be available. That character MUST not have any other attachments. All that matters is the player wants them.
How is this not sexual assault?
Well, maybe if she had LITERALLY ANYTHING AT ALL to add to the conversation, I might have learned something too.
I can't read "literature for women", because that invariably means "books for teen girls". Always the most shallow bullshit with the most nothing of main characters, focusing on some forced love triangle in the name of maintaining sexual tension.
Give me stories, give me characters. Give me power couples! Just give me something to read that makes me root for them rather than eye-roll.
This may come as a shock, but when you hire people for half the price, they make the seniors have to do twice the work and incur three times the tech debt. It's actually a net loss for you.
Cheap is not good. Good is good. Hire better people instead of flushing money down the toilet.
Living that tech lead life.
And don't forget building releases! Building releases is always so much fun!
Singing softly to myself while working...
Noth-ing is so per-ma-nent as temp-o-ra-ry code
And those cries die a slow, silent death in the backlog, amidst echoes of all my other tickets, saying "tech debt... tech debt..."
If you can't capture the logic within one switch statement, consider whether it needs to be divided up into different files instead.
The number of times I've had to pour through if-else hell trying to follow a logic path through the code only to realize it's three different, entirely separate cases...
I would like to address something that has come up several times since I relaunched my computer recommendation blog two weeks ago. Part of the reason that I started @okay-computer and that I continue to host my computer-buying-guide is that it is part of my job to buy computers every day.
I am extremely conversant with pricing trends and specification norms for computers, because literally I quoted seven different laptops with different specs at different price-points *today* and I will do more of the same on Monday.
Now, I am holding your face in my hands. I am breathing in sync with you. We are communicating. We are on the same page. Listen.
Computer manufacturers don't expect users to store things locally so it is no longer standard to get a terabyte of storage in a regular desktop or laptop. You're lucky if you can find one with a 512gb ssd that doesn't have an obnoxious markup because of it.
If you think that the norm is for computers to come with 1tb of storage as a matter of course, you are seeing things from a narrow perspective that is out of step with most of the hardware out there.
I went from a standard expectation of a 1tb hdd five years ago to expecting to get a computer with a 1tb hdd that we would pull and replace with a 1tb ssd to expecting to get a computer that came with a 256gb ssd that we would pull and replace with a 1tb ssd, to just having the 256gb ssd come standard and and only seeking out more storage if the customer specifically requested it because otherwise they don't want to pay for more storage.
Computer manufacturers consider any storage above 256gb to be a premium feature these days.
Look, here's a search for Lenovo Laptops with 16GB RAM (what I would consider the minimum in today's market) and a Win11 home license (not because I prefer that, but to exclude chromebooks and business machines). Here are the storage options that come up for those specs:
You will see that the majority of the options come with less than a terabyte of storage. You CAN get plenty of options with 1tb, but the point of Okay-Computer is to get computers with reasonable specs in an affordable price range. These days, that mostly means half a terabyte of storage (because I can't bring myself to *recommend* less than that but since most people carry stuff in their personal cloud these days, it's overkill for a lot of people)
All things being equal, 500gb more increases the price of this laptop by $150:
It brings this one up by $130:
This one costs $80 more to go from 256 to 512 and there isn't an option for 1TB.
For the last three decades storage has been getting cheaper and cheaper and cheaper, to the point that storage was basically a negligible cost when HDDs were still the standard. With the change to SSDs that cost increased significantly and, while it has come down, we have not reached the cheap, large storage as-a-standard on laptops stage; this is partially because storage is now SO cheap that people want to entice you into paying a few dollars a month to use huge amounts of THEIR storage instead of carrying everything you own in your laptop.
You will note that 1tb ssds cost you a lot less than the markup to pay for a 1tb ssd instead of a 500gb ssd
In fact it can be LESS EXPENSIVE to get a 1tb ssd than a 500gb ssd.
This is because computer manufacturers are, generally speaking, kind of shitty and do not care about you.
I stridently recommend getting as much storage as you can on your computer. If you can't get the storage you want up front, I recommend upgrading your storage.
But also: in the current market (December 2024), you should not expect to find desktops or laptops in the low-mid range pricing tier with more than 512gb of storage. Sometimes you'll get lucky, but you shouldn't be expecting it - if you need more storage and you need an inexpensive computer, you need to expect to upgrade that component yourself.
So, if you're looking at a computer I linked and saying "32GB of RAM and an i7 processor but only 500GB of storage? What kind of nonsense is that?" Then I would like to present you with one of the computers I had to quote today:
A three thousand dollar macbook with the most recent apple silicon (the m4 released like three weeks ago) and 48 FUCKING GIGABYTES OF RAM with a 512gb ssd.
You can't even upgrade that SSD! That's an apple that drive isn't going fucking anywhere! (don't buy apple, apple is shit)
The norms have shifted! It sucks, but you have to be aware of these kinds of things if you want to pay a decent price for a computer and know what you're getting into.
I think this is a prime example of how manufacturers are pushing, rather than responding to, the market.
There is no consumer who regularly wants to store their information on the cloud. As a backup, yes, but not for daily use. There are consumers who don't care (and don't know the difference), and consumers who do not want it. But there is no one who actually desires it as a normal thing for regular use.
But, since you can charge a regular fee for cloud storage, and you can mark up computer prices for more storage, they are not providing consumers with the storage they WANT, and making software progressively *less* usable to push us to the option they want us to take.
10-key is still a thing but it is a thing almost exclusively on laptops that are larger than 14".
This is just a physical size of the device thing; I always end up asking clients if they prioritize portability or a number pad because a lot of people want the number pad more than they want a small laptop, but they don't know that until you ask them because they think a small laptop will come with a number pad. In almost all circumstances, it will not and you need to get a bigger computer to get the numbers.
But also a TON of people just do basic word processing and internet surfing without a bunch of data entry or calculations or phone dialing; i would go nuts without a numeric keypad and I know many people with jobs who would ALSO go nuts, but for a lot of people the size tradeoff is worth it.
As someone who's built every computer she's owned since like 2008, this blows my mind, because I had no idea.
What about artists? What about video editors? You need a drive larger than that just for your Adobe scratch disk.
I always assume that the work computers I got sent were just particularly shitty. I had no idea this was standard.
