Memory Drabbles

Livestock. The salty scent of the bay air. Running barefoot in an airy dress through a field of sunflowers. The scent of olive oil being processed. Gathering eggs while dew still clung to the blades of grass. These are the brief flashes of memories that zip through Zita's mind as she thinks back on her childhood - idyllic, pastoral, innocent. How had things changed so drastically in the last twenty years? It took her a solid few minutes to wade through the fog before it hit her in short spurts:

A hushed conversation could be overheard if it was quiet enough - if the baby would just stop crying, perhaps she and Emmanuel could really hear it. Times were rough for everyone, volunteers were being called for, mother was restless and needed a purpose outside of being a mother. Laundry and sewing, they were never meant to make ends meet. If she wanted to leave, she should just do it... those were the words she remembered hearing from her father; harsh in hindsight, uncharacteristically so for a man such as Carmine... ---- She hadn't gone, but she'd done everything she could to make her husband regret those words. It bled over onto how she handled her children, but not enough to cause concern outside of the walls of their home. According to everyone else, they were picture perfect and happy. Evrisse intended to keep it that way; she enjoyed being the envy of other farmers' wives, being wanted by their husbands. Her children were doing well, her family floating along in these precarious times... ---- Bandits. The farmhouse smelled of ash and the distinct scent of unwashed, bloodied men. She huddled in a cupboard with Laetitia in her lap, mentally willing there to be an invisible wall blocking them from view through the slats of the doors. The toddler was asleep, thank goodness, but Zita feared her heart's pounding would give them away anyhow. She could see a hand aiming for the cupboard door... ---- The young girl, barely sixteen, spit out red liquid. The wine was too young, too acidic, too... many negatives at once. While the strawberry didn't require much aging, this particular barrel was either not up to snuff, or her palate was too unrefined, or the adults were just out of their minds... Whichever it was, this stuff was gross, and she felt very bad for trying to con Leopold into drinking it with her. But the way he was looking at her made her think the last thing he actually cared about was the wine... ---- Well, that was that. Third letter returned to sender; Leo didn't seem to actually exist, at least not in Applenook. He said he was going home... what had happened between here and there? Or had he just deceived her the entire Phoenix season? The answer mattered not; she was heartbroken... ---- Declan Gerard flicked a glass marble in her direction, causing her to jump to attention. The eighteen-year-old's face looked apologetic, but her looks were quite deceiving. He knew better - he'd taught her that poker face. He also knew that if he wanted the genuine apology, he needed to throw her into the deep end and test her skills - something to keep the blonde on her toes... ---- Her right ear was still tinged with red, though most of the tissue had turned pink, rough, with an oddly squiggly texture to it. The scarring looked terrible, but she'd walked away from the ordeal with luck on her side. Sure, she might be missing half of an eyebrow and a quarter of her hair, but those could be drawn on, hidden behind a wig or illusion; she was alive, and it was all that mattered. She couldn't say the same for the other woman, however, and in the past weeks, that thought alone had made her retch. She'd deserved it... right? ---- It didn't make her sick anymore. They wanted to celebrate that fact, but she grappled with the concept. She was no follower of Grenth, no Judge, but it was her blade, her torch, that had taken those lives. It was for the greater good, she reminded herself, rocking back and forth and hugging her knees to her chest. They deserved it... right? ---- It didn't make her feel as guilty anymore. Man turned on man, dragon turned on man, undead man turned on man, nature turned on man, a God had turned on man. Life had to be protected, and she was convinced she was doing all she could to prevent further destruction. But people kept dying, tensions kept raising, the boiling point just kept being raised. Was she even worthy of being an Initiate if she thought the attempts might be futile? Would Luca allow her to branch out? Perhaps she'd have to consult with the mentor later...
