today my friend was talking about her sexuality troubles and how she thinks she may be a lesbian and in the conversation something kinda hit me about the importance of representation that I hadn’t realized before.

when I still labeled myself as bisexual after falling for a girl I knew, I figured out after the fact that my compulsion towards men was based in my want for a family. the boys I “liked” were kind and pretty but that was kinda it, they were just what I saw as a necessary extension of the family I knew I wanted. all that to say, when I was talking with my friend, I told her how I straight up didn’t know that two women could be together with a family independent of a man and vice versa. it was something i didn’t really figure out until I realized I was a lesbian. and on top of that my friend told me she didn’t know being gay was a thing until she was like 11!! it honestly just made me re-realize how late in the game queer representation came and how honestly grateful I am for shows like Steven Universe, The Owl House, and more post-pandemic shows that are loud and proud about their representations so that kids can see themselves in media and have the words to describe their identities.
