Omgggg yāall,,,, I finished this damn book. And I am SO disappointed!!! Here is my ranting review, there will be spoilers bc people need to know what the fuck kind of message this author is sending with his shitty book. Here we go:
So, this book started out so intriguing. Two women bonded by trauma decide to murder each others āvillainā. I like revenge, I like women doing wrong things, I was all here for it!! I was having fun with all the plot twists and turns, thinking all the time wow! 𤯠and then we hit the 70% mark,,,,,
Enter my most hated plot device: one of the āevilā characters is??? You guessed it!!! MENTALLY ILL!! There is a poor woman who is villainized for the rest of the story for being traumatized from an attempted murder, having a psychotic break from the trauma, and setting out to kill her attempted killer so she can feel safe. Reading about her trauma and psychosis was so sad, disturbing and triggering for me, I felt awful for her.
But SHE is the villain of this stupid story!!! The author even attempts to have a brain and use a snippet from the DSM 5 to justify having a mentally ill, psychosis having, traumatized, survivor of a woman be the evil killer. Meanwhile we have an actual evil killer running around called Mr. Blue Eyes (heās the one who attempted to kill the previously mentioned woman). He is LITERALLY so evil and apathetic, he even (in a very stupid and heavy handed way) gets his surviving victim (the poor woman with psychosis) institutionalized and VISITS HER AND MENTALLY TORTURES HER!!!! What the fuck?
BUT, this dingbat of an author makes him the hero because he kills a pedophile for the main character. Wow okay ONE āļø right does not negate all of his evil wrongdoings!!
Why have I not mentioned the main character til now?? Well because the author (a man) wrote this woman so blandly, so inept, boring, and just made her a pawn and tool for the other characters, not giving her any agency of her own. Typical and what I would expect for someone who wrote this garbage.
This book was so messily and offensively written and people are just eating it up and applauding this moron like heās the next great Author of Our Illustrious Era.
When are thriller authors going to stop using psychosis to make their characters evil??? Just STOP š itās so stigmatizing, hurtful, false, and just inhumane to paint an already downtrodden and vulnerable population with that label. People with psychosis are more likely to BE harmed rather than TO harm.
I could rant more but gahhh I HATE this book, I HATE the praise itās getting, I HATE the misogynistic undertones of it and I DESPISE the setback in progress itās causing in mental illness stigma. š
Another library book haul, all literary fiction!! Weāve got Second Place by Rachel Cusk (described as āa haunting fable of art, family and fateā), Peach Pit (a short story anthology of 16 different tales of unsavory women, canāt wait to read this!!!)
Follow Me to the Ground by Sue Rainsford (described as a ādream between a fairytale and nightmare, desire and delusion, folktale and warningā)
Sea Change by Gina Chung (a woman coming to terms with trauma in her past and current state of her life while being friends with a mall aqauarium octopus š) this sounds SO good!!
Camp Zero by Michelle Min Sterling (something about a woman trying to secure safety in the midst of our climate ravaged world, Iām not too sure)
Thatās my book haul from the library!!! Up next later today is a ranting review lol!! š so keep an eye out for that! Bookstagram at bookishmunchkin
Hereās my latest library book haul!! Mostly new releases! Got some weird lit fic, some speculative fiction, a short story collection and a sapphic romance! I did a cutesy kawaii theme today for this photo, hope yāall enjoy āŗļø bookstagram at bookishmunchkin
Iām currently reading Annihilation by Jeff Vandermeer! I checked it out at the library and was surprised to see it was a really beat up copy lol, BUT turns out itās the first edition, so I see why the library has kept it. Iām only a bit into the story but I love the writing and atmosphere so far!! Lots of mystery about this strange environment!
Iām reading Kill For Me, Kill For You (took forever to get it at the library), and omg itās sooo good. Iām 64% of the way through and have no idea whoās really done what and WHY! Lol š very good so far!
ā¬ļø hopefully Patrick will be me before I finish the book! I Live for guessing the ending correctly!!!
Iāve wanted to expand my reading variety so I bought these two books of essays. Bluets is a lyrical almost poetic essay book about the color blue! And The Book of Delights is a diary about daily delightful and joyful things. Iāve heard really good things about both of these books so very excited to read them š„³ bookstagram at bookishmunchkin
