To Hakyeon, power was something he craved in his long-term future, but ultimately, hated it. The king he worked under was proof in itself. Working so near the evil ruler, Hakyeon had learned much about the true side. Though the king was not scared to show how cruel he could be in the publicâs eye, behind the large, decorated doors, he became something of an even more unexplained specimen.
And that was when Hakyeon had enough.Â
He knew many people hated the king, but he was positive on who he would work with when he saw the woman sobbing at one of the many ceremonies of death. Holding her hand in his, the plan expanded from there.Â
âDo not worry, for the king trusts me. He would not suspect a thing until it was too late,â he explained, following after the female into the dark woods, the plan slowly falling into place.
The counselorâs plan was well thought of and she was more than willing to cooperate. Thinking of her brother, Chanmi remembered the promises and advices he gave and a new thought appeared in her mind. Although the man did have the kingâs trust, how could she know if he was sincere in his speech? After all, someone had told the tyrant about a small group of unhappy peasants that were starting to take action against him. These past weeks executions hadnât been mere coincidences.
Now uncertain, she noticed that her brother had failed to mention him. The courtesan had already taken a risk by agreeing to meet Hakyeon, but was it too late to go back? âIf he mentions this meeting, Iâll be punished... and so will he, for meeting me without the kingâs permissionâ, she quickly thought.
âI do not doubt of the kingâs trust on you. But I must know: Can I deposit my faith on you?â
Not exactly the ego boost Taehwa had hoped for â but close enough, and far better than nothing. With the rules officially announced, there was no longer any reason (aside from the own laziness) to decline it all. Even less as that male pride got its best of him; going back on an already accepted challenge was not his style. âThat was at least half of a confession, how could I possibly just decline it now? Iâm not that heartless.âÂ
"Half of a confession?â She chuckled before slowly shaking her head at his words. âIndeed, itâs good to dream big.â Â Being quite competitive, the thrill of this new bet was already running through her veins. Chanmi licked her lips and gave him a sly smile before proposing an idea. âYouâre really tired from work, right? How about we watch a movie so you can relax?â

âHello! My nameâs Yang Jiwon and I hope youâre having a great day!â
"Well, hello. My name is Kim Chanmi and my day hasnât been that great yet. However, itâs nice to meet you.â
âAh, I do not mind at all. But are you not one of those in line for the succession of the throne?â The young duke was familiar of the king, but not the potential successors except the crowned prince. Whatever political feud within the royal family here was, it wasnât his business to be involved in. After all, he had his own affairs to worry about. âSurely they are not true, these rumors you speak of, are they? I have heard some things, and I am only guessing that this was why Lady Hana was more in the spotlight tonight. Am I correct, milady?â
âI guess some would say I am⌠if more than thirty people receive a death kiss before myself.â She replied, serene. The man was in a much higher social position than her, the youngest of seven sisters, and it would be improper to avoid a question many had been wondering but only one had asked. âI am not certain. None in my family ever treated me differently and this was never a matter of topic in our conversations.â Chanmi looked up at him, curious about his reaction. âIt is said that I am a âshadow ladyâ, my lord; It is no shock to me that she catches eyes. It is surprising, however, that she didnât catch yours.â
prxstne:
âYou got a point.â He laughs, his attention still focus at the pot, scared that he might ruin their hard work once he divert his attention elsewhere but sees to it that heâs listening to her attentively. He was so used in multitasking anyway. âAs much as I wanted for you rest and me taking over, Iâm too scared thinking that one move will ruin our lunchâ
"Itâs just pasta, you shouldnât worry too much. And, if our lunch gets ruined, we can just start over... or order some pizza." The woman moved around the kitchen to grab plates for the two of them, placing then on the counter to make it easier for the serving. Tilting her head to the side, she smiled softly. "Just relax and talk to me.âÂ

âPerhaps we do, milady. But Iâm afraid I have been too preoccupied with familiar associates to notice Lady Hanaâs flirtatious gaze.â He took the ladyâs hand twirling her then pulling her close again. âWin me over? Iâm afraid I do not follow what you mean, milady. And pray tell, what did you mean by a neglected child?â Was she hinting that she might be an illegitimate child? Or was there an underlying motive to why she engaged herself with him? He had to be careful.Â
âI beg your pardon, my lord. As a result of being reserved, most things appear  in my mind in ways I canât properly portray, reason why I made a poor choice of term.â And it was true. In her usual lonesome days, Chanmi often played games mixing her reality and fiction as a quiet form of escape, making a friend of the silence. âAs Iâve told you before, the rumors have generated quite a buzz and the rest of the court has chosen to ignore me.â One, two, three, one two three, she thought. Mind in perfect sync with the rhythm.Â
 AIM anyone?
âShe is the sweetest thing out there.â The young noble couldnât help but brag about his sister, whose beauty was almost dangerously charming. For Mikoto, finding his sister a fiance was more important that him finding his own bride, because at least, seeing his sister secured and happy in life would leave him in peace. Swaying to the waltzâ 1, 2, 3â his brown orbs met with the ladyâs as they engage in a friendly conversation. âYou are curious, milady. I suppose I do keep by my sisterâs side and talk with her animated friends. But after a while, I do keep on the sidelines and observe. It is rather amusing at times, mind you.âÂ
âOh, it seems as if we share a common interest then. Have you noticed the spark in the violinistâs eyes whenever the pale maid appears? Or even the way Lady Hana has been looking at you this whole time?â She questioned, a confident gaze locked onto his as they effortlessly moved across the room. âWith my recent achievements as a neglected child in this power realm, I might just win over you in this matter.â
wiisterxa:
He smiles with his back on her line of view still stirring the ingredients inside the pot. âAt least you can cook and its edible. I only rely on my sisterâs skills and I live with that since we both moved out our main house.â Letting out a soft laugh, the movement of the ladle paused mid-air as he looked over her. âYou think so? Iâm doing my best, master.â
âWell, somebody has to save our skins in a certain point of life.â She added with a small chuckle before nodding at his question, a bright smile on her lips. âI do. Iâm even considering sitting on the couch over there and leaving all the hard work for you~ But... it should be ready in a few minutes, so Iâll just stay here.â She teased.
hantaehwaâ -Â A continuation of this~
â...Iâm in. Please enlighten me on the rules.â The first thought was undeniably to decline the request, but a big ego said otherwise as it made itself known only seconds later. âWhy not admit that you just want my company?â
Unlike the other, Chanmi was used to enjoying the night. Her work didnât demand an early wake up and she spent most nights awake instead of sleeping. Upon hearing his question, she couldnât help snorting before replying with a playful sincerity. âItâs true that your company isnât unpleasant, however, my eyes and mind are focused on the prize-- Not on you. Thereâs only two rules that I can think off at the moment: You canât fall asleep and you are not allowed keep your eyes closed for more than 10 seconds. Does it still sound like a good deed to you? â
