A lot of ya’ll on this website be like:
The fact that 65% of the responses in the notes are ‘Well, you deserve it because you read problematic fanfiction’ is just proving OP’s point…
The worst part is today’s bullies have figured out how to mask their bullying under the guise of being heroes, because the people they bully are “problematic” or part of some group that has unearned privileges and these things in their minds deserve unrelenting scorn.
“No I’m not shoving a nerd into a locker, see, he’s a straight white cis male who is probably a closet misogynist so I am in fact drinking my Respect Women Juice by tormenting him,”
“Oh I’m not picking on her because she’s weird I pulled up some problematic opinions she had 3 years ago and just warning people so they don’t hurt themselves,”
So basically bullies just got Even Worse if that was possible.
I hate it when antis are like “this piece of fiction with [insert adult content here] is not good for children” as if creators of said content don’t know that. Creators who make mature content are actively trying to shoo kids away all the goddamn time, but kids still get through then have the nerve to bitch at adults when there’s something they, children, can’t handle. Adults in 18+ fandom spaces want to interact with other civil adults, not coddle and babysit entitled ass children who shouldn’t even be there in the first place.
What the hell are you talking about OP? This has nothing to do with what an “anti” is.
I've seen actual points from antis where they would bring in "think of the children" rhetoric when trying to dictate what adults should and shouldn't create. Adults create things with mature/problematic subjects with the intention of other adults who enjoy those seeing it. These creators will have things like "minors do not interact" or "🔞" on their profiles. The content would also be thoroughly tagged and they'll still get pushback. It's okay to not like it, but it's deeper than that with antis in fandom. Antis knowingly dive right into shit with subjects they don't like, get uncomfortable, then go on a whole ass moral crusade to try and censor material that wasn't even made for them.

Your stuff on race relations in the JoJo fandom is interesting. What I see quite a lot (I'm younger, 19, so it might not be super prevalent to the older folks of fandom) are people pushing their (usually black) racebends of white or Asian characters as some kind of a statement against racism. As a black woman, this makes me snicker at best, and really uncomfortable and/or frustrated at worst. /1
(Continued) They want race commentary to be taken seriously, but they don’t even acknowledge things that actually look really racist. The main example that sticks out to me is Joseph snapping his fingers to get Avdol’s attention like he’s a servant. As someone who has elders with personal experiences of being treated like that and worse by white people, that action stuck out a lot to me. No one talks about the implicit racism there, but making a white/Asian character black is a statement? /2
Sorry if any of that came off like a disjointed rant. Your commentary just made me excited to speak up to more than just my close friends. Feel free to ask for any clarification. /fin
Thank you for sending this. I really appreciate you reading and engaging with my post on this topic.
Yes, absolutely: Joseph snapping his fingers at Avdol is racist– and Orientalist, as it also participates in tropes of white (especially English) men treating Arab men as servile: Joseph says in the Sun arc that he’s a fan of “Lawrence of Arabia”; Araki was invoking (Western) Orientalist tropes on purpose. Even in the context of Araki as a Japanese author playing with Orientalist tropes, and even in the context of the later nuances given to Avdol’s character and his friendship with Joseph… canon is undeniably problematic here, imo.
When it comes to racebending, I think you’re getting at something important: the larger context of the fandom in which racebending takes place.

"it feels disingenuous when the fandom as a whole uses racebending frequently but infrequently creates content for canonically black characters." THIS. GETS. ME. HEATED. Thank you so much for pointing that out. JoJo already has black characters that deserve to be fleshed out. Smokey and Avdol are favorites of mine because they have so much potential. To see them get ignored for another pointless racebend for the sake of "uwu reblog to make the racists mad" is sickening. It feels like a slap in the face. That conveys to me that the race only matters if the character is popular enough. It's not about "sticking it to the man" with these types of fans. In my eyes, it's about reaching out to more people for the sake of getting pats on the back for being the most "progressive." Not everyone who likes to do racebends is like that, but the stuff that gets circulated the most comes off as shallow to me. Thanks again for the wonderful reply and the articles, Taro. This is a great discussion to have.

i fukcing hate this show
This is the best scene in the entirety of IZ imo it’s literally perfect
according to the staff commentary for this episode, the script actually called for heavy traffic to be rushing past Dib and Zim in this scene, which is why they’re shouting at each other, and you can even still sort of hear the sound effects but then, for whatever reason, in the finished episode they just forgot the cars
