a weird thing is that we got waves of people going "who cares if its cringe or youre annoying! have fun!" but no one really learned how to accept the fact that some people will find you annoying or think your art or your work or posts or anyrhing sucks and thats ok. rather it just became a weird "if people think youre annoying theyre just morally bad. let people enjoy things!". like no i think this yes man only biome sucks and people are allowed to not like artstyles and shows and media and other things

if youre an artist, a creator, or just someone whos involved in hobbies: learning that no matter what you do, some people will find you annoying is extremely important for your mental health, just as learning that not liking things is normal and youre allowed to do it

as people have mentioned in the tags, i think this yes-man attitude leads more people to make up random moral reasons to dislike things. if disliking something for no reason is bad, then you have to constantly justify yourself as to why this thing sucks, which is also not mature and sucks

i know it doesnt actually apply to me, so im not rbing it. but theres a post on here thats like “If you were ever on 4chan seriously for any reason at all you should go to hell for real”

and i got this stupid pang of shame because i was on there. when i was 10 years old. for the /mlp/ board. i cannot stress enough i was 10. mlp had recently started airing. the board itself was brand new.

1) obviously i was on that board and desensitized to the things on that board bc of childhood trauma before then, but still…

2) i cannot even begin to tell you the kind of extra damage it did to me. in fact i think it heavily contributed to a fucked up domino effect that influenced the rest of my life.

i also want to say reddit was just as bad. i first got on reddit when i was 8 and told nobody my age, but it was obvious from the way i left comments/what posts i interacted with and how (childrens media related) i was an elementary schooler. my pms were filled with people trying to get me to do sexual things so desperately and send pictures by appealing to what i liked as a kid, that it was obvious even to 8 year old me.

if i had to rank how bad each website i was on as an elementary schooler was:

1) 4chan

2) deviantart (because the grooming was a lot more insidious but had a much more profound effect on me: this is where i had an “online gf” “my age” and it being one of the rare times my parents stepped in, it turns out it was actually her fucking MOM talking to me using her DAUGHTER’S pictures)

3) reddit

4) omegle

5) club penguin

anyway i still get this total hit of fear anytime a kid starts talking to me about how they’re on the internet, and then start talking about fandoms they’re in that are mostly populated by adults.

like. webkinz is still running and i never had a single issue there ever. make your kid a webkinz account or something. the internet is so fucking evil.

Very generally speaking, when you see a black man in a piece of media, be it tv show, movie, video game, etc. there’s something you often see a lot of writers do. To go against the stereotype of black men (and black people in general) being dumb and lazy, you’ll see this black male character being smart and an achiever. 

The Black Nerd. A common character type, the nerd will always be very interested in all things nerdy: science, video games, mathematics, etc. In an continued effort to combat stereotypes, the Black Nerd will be lack athleticism, probably being asthmatic (the nerdiest of conditions). The Black Nerd will dress smartly, suspenders and bow ties. They’ll always talk smart too, using proper English with complex words.

Now, I don’t have a problem with a black character being a nerd, indeed black people are a people; we aren’t all the same and we all have varying personalities. The problem I have is that too often we see a distinct disconnect between Blackness and the Black Nerd. The Black Nerd doesn’t listen to hip hop or rap, only classical music. The Black Nerd only has white friends, the only other black characters are into not nerdy stuff. The Black Nerd never ever uses AAVE at any time in any context.

And again I must say that Black people, not being a monolith, there are no hard fast rules to being Black. I’m more than sure there are Black people like what I’ve described above, I’m not saying it’s impossible; what I’m getting at is that the only Black Nerd we see. There are Black Nerds that play basketball, that bump Kendrick Lamar, and use AAVE since it’s an ever changing dialect. I’m just saying there’s no one way of being a nerd and no one way of being Black.
