Hi! A little bit of info about me:

My pronouns are she/they. You don’t need to know exactly how old I am but rest assured, I was born before Y2K.

My main blog is @mariedemedicis and that’s where I follow from.

My first doll was Kirsten for Christmas when I was, I wanna say, eight or nine? My most recent doll is Marisol, who I have low key wanted since my cousin had her when we were younger but I was always a historical hoe and aside from my parents not being made of money, I think they were really into the educational aspect of the historical girls, which was a plus because they’re not doll people, and I was able to get her for myself recently in 2019, I believe it was.

This blog currently is and likely will continue to be very American Girl doll heavy, hence the name! Other things I am interested include calico critters/sylvanian families, miniatures, crafts, Magic Attic dolls, beanie babies, Kelly dolls, Maplelea, funko pops, and historical costuming, so may also feature here.

Why Missy Ling? Honestly I just wanted a ‘canon’ AG character url lol (and I do love Ivy. Underrated queen <3)

Idgaf maybe this is a hot take, but the doll influencers that are partners with Mattel are apart of the problem. If you keep gassing up this billion dollar company they're gonna keep putting out shitty low quality products (Not that they care or anything I mean they're receiving the products for free). You need to know when to take a step back. Not every doll line account post needs a comment saying "Oh waow I love these 😍" especially when the majority of the comment section is ppl criticizing the dolls for being poor quality. Read the room.

Valentine's Day in Caroline's home was a bit lonely. She was missing her father fiercely. But her heart was eased when she went into the parlor and looked at the sailor's valentine, a special gift from Papa.

Sailor's valentines were souvenirs made from arranged seashells that sailors in the 19th century bought in Barbados and brought home to their families. Caroline's collection included this valentine as part of her parlor set. I made my own parlor, so without the actual items I had to get creative to reproduce this particular piece. It's just a printed image of the one from Caroline's collection, which is itself a printed image in a wooden frame. I glued each panel to foam board to give it stability, then cut triangles and glued them onto the back as a stand.

Modern American Girl seems to fundamentally not understand that parents want their children to have educational toys, and that little kids think historical clothes are fun and fancy, and that these two things in combination are what allowed Pleasent Company to charge upwards of $100 for a single doll at a time when most dolls were still in the $10-$15 range

You're absolutely right. AG tries to tell us that "kids don't like to read anymore, they just want trendy toys and electronics" forgetting that this is also what people believed in 1986. AG is forgetting that not every kid in the world hates reading. Plenty of kids out there love to read and love to learn about history through books and toys. Those kids deserve to have something geared towards them. And maybe if AG would offer more historical toys to choose from, parents who stopped buying into the "kids hate books" propaganda will have a reason to steer their children's playtime towards educational toys and associated books. They'll be able to do that because those options exist!!!

Corinne, Gwynn, Flurry, and I watched the Olympic Figure Skating Exhibition Gala tonight! ⛸️ We finished JUST in time... it expired from Peacock only 16 minutes later!! 😮‍💨

Everyone's favorite parts:

Mine was Ilia Malinin's performance, I had NO idea figure skating could be so anxiety-inducing, holy frick. I caught my breath so many times, and I had literal tears in my eyes by the end. Also I'd never heard the song before but I really like it.

Gwynn liked Kaori Sakamoto best, but also really liked Lee Hae-in because (like about every 7-year-old girl right now) she's obsessed with KPop Demon Hunters

Corinne couldn't decide on a single favorite, but really liked Ami Nakai, Alysa Liu (obviously), and the finale

Flurry liked the popcorn 🍿

Obviously we need to catch up on the snowboarding and skiing events too, but that'll have to wait till tomorrow.

Do you know if any of the American Girls would have been able to go to major sporting events like the Olympics?

The 1904 Olympic Games took place in St. Louis, Missouri. Since Samantha didn’t attend the St. Louis World’s Fair, we know she probably didn’t attend the Olympic Games either. But she absolutely could have.

Fun fact! There’s a book called Samantha at the St. Louis Exposition on archive.org about a woman named Samantha who attends the St. Louis World’s Fair. I haven’t read it, but it was written in 1904 and it’s a cool coincidence.

I imagine older Samantha as a bit of a traveller so I can see her going to other Olympic Games as she grew older.

Depending on Rebecca’s economic status, she might have attended the Paris Olympics in 1924. I can see Rebecca going to Paris purely for the aesthetic.

If Emily returned to London she would have seen the London Olympics in 1948.

Julie might have gone to the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984.

Lea was in Brazil during the Rio Olympics in 2016 and I don’t see why she wouldn’t have gone. (Maybe she was scared of getting Zika?)

There were several Olympic Games that occurred during the girls’ lifetimes but the distance to travel to the city was not possible due to economic reasons.

As for other sports, most of the girls are very active. Kaya runs races, races horses and plays shinny (a game like field hockey). Felicity enters Penny in a horse race in Lady Margaret’s Ghost but doesn’t ride her herself because that’s improper. Caroline loves sailing. We know Kit loves baseball and Mia loves hockey. Ivy and McKenna are gymnasts.
