Lil Rakshasa Transformation Anim 🐯
KUMBAKARNA - The 20ft tall, younger brother of the demon king Ravana
Growing up with the Ramayana, I never really paid much attention to him, a lot of the myths focused on his monstrous nature and being a huge obstacle for Lord Ram's army. Oddly enough, he was a pretty chivalrous dude! Scolding his brother for kidnapping Lady Sita, but still fighting for his brother out of loyalty despite knowing who he was up against, The legendary sleeping giant.
RAVANA - The Demon king of Lanka!
Nothing says final boss monster like 10 heads and 20 arms, the main antagonist of the Ramayana of Hindu mythology
DnD Rakshasa - Despite my mixed feelings on em, Tiger demon is a pretty sick visual 🐅🐯
CLASSIC RAKSHASA - Your garden variety Rakshasa in the written myths were typically described with wild Fiery hair, Blood red eyes, and sharp claws with protruding teeth.
Though there's not a whole lot of visuals these days for Rakshasa outside of the DnD tiger demon, I like to play around with the base description, while also pushing the boundaries of how many chaotic elements I can add to their design.
To relate it to European mythology, I'd argue that Rakshasa are less like demons, but a bit more like powerful shapeshifting Orcs!
This section I mostly had to come up with myself using inspiration from stories in both the epics and borrowing a little worldbuilding from the DnD rakshasa.
While there are stories of rakshasa using their illusions to trick and take the form of others in mythology, I wasn't able to find examples of them trying to integrate into a society and keep up appearances in order to feast which I think was some cool lore on DnDs part!
While DnD has the Rakshasas origins as devils coming from the abyss shrouded in mystery, their mythological origins have multiple interpretations.
I chose to do a mix of them being born of anger and hunger and the story of them being born when Brahma, the creator god took a breath, because the idea of a god literally "breathing" life into his creations and said creations immediately turning to devour him is a really sick visual!
RAKSHASA- You might recognize em as Tiger Demons from DnD, but their mythological origins trace all the way back to the indian subcontinent as strange carnivorous humanoids using illusions and trickery to hunt their prey (so not really all that different!)
I made this lil passion project as a kinda love letter to the folklore & mythology I grew up with when I was hindu, and how I feel a lot of aspects of hinduism (and south asian folklore in general) are really misattributed in media.
If you're tight on money and can't help support, no worries! I'll be posting some of the pages here throughout the week for you guys to see!
