The Lime Kilns were a nice place to stop and rest after we climbed Black Mountain last Saturday. Hike number two today, a couple of miles away from Clapp’s Pond, to Race Point in the Cape Cod National Seashore, 3.4 miles. Sexton Garbage Receiver. I haven’t seen one of these. Until the 70s or 80s, many towns in the Greater Boston area (and I assume beyond) had separate garbage and trash collections (collectively referred to as rubbish by DPWs and on many town meeting warrants, etc). Trash went to the end of the driveway, garbage (food scraps) went *into* the driveway, if you had one of these doohickeys installed, to be taken away by the Town-contracted garbage collector. These were a good idea, because who wants to store garbage in their house until rubbish day? The iron cover was heavy enough to thwart raccoons, skunks, and opossums, etc. Garbage that was collected was then composted or turned into slop for local pig farmers. For the record, the Gaffey Compound didn’t have one of these (we had a gravel driveway, making installation unlikely), but we had a large metal drum half buried behind the barn with a metal cover that slid on top. The MV Ever Given has been freed from the Suez Canal and is now free to roam the world, including these four bodies of water known well to me: 1. The Charles River Basin in Boston. 2. The Mill Pond Reservoir in Burlington, MA. 3. Walden Pond, Concord, MA. 4. Lower (north) Mountain Lake, Mountain Lakes, Haverhill, NH. 5. Upper (south) Mountain Lake, Mountain Lakes, Haverhill, NH. The ship is to scale in all pics. From: evergiven-everywhere.glitch.me Of these bodies of water, Walden, at about 100 feet (~30m) deep and Mill Pond at about 60 feet (18m) deep are probably the only ones that it could fit in without hitting the bottom. The Charles only averages about 15 feet (4.5m) deep, both Mountain Lakes are about 20 feet (6.1 m) at their deepest points.
