Choices
Atlanta comes to a crossroads when she is forced to confront her feelings, and this is a look inside her mind. She chooses to ignore and compartmentalize.
Disclaimer: I am still working my way through DS9
Compartmentalization and secrets are no stranger to Lieutenant Commander Atlanta Kingsley, but part of being a successful individual is being honest with yourself — Atlanta hates that deeply: especially today.
Quark's is busy. It usually is, but Atlanta prefers it busy because that means people don't pay so much attention to her. The civilian clothes help with blending in, too.
"My dear Counselor!" Garak calls as he takes a seat beside her.
"Garak," Atlanta smiles, turning to him.
How strange, she muses, to be on friendly terms with a Cardassian — an ex Obsidian Order member at that. She has been anywhere from civil to hostile with Cradassians before, but friendly is new.
"You're all alone, I thought perhaps you might like some company?"
"Hard to be all alone here on days a ship is freshly docked, but I won't say no to company," she shrugs
"Kind as ever."
"Another one for the lady," Quark says as he sets down a slushie with real rum in it.
"Another?" Garak asks, and she neatly ignores the question.
"Thank you, Quark."
"Anything for an esteemed customer!"
"That smells like true alcohol, Counselor. Isn't this the third week in a row?" Garak asks, watching her.
It should bother her to be watched closely. It usually does — Cardassians have never watched her closely for reasons she likes... and yet... she doesn't mind.
Why doesn't she mind?
Atlanta fixes another smile in place, "Call it having fun."
"You don't say. Oh! You have an eye for movies. Have you seen the latest documentary on your Federation's beloved Kirk?"
Atlanta snorts loudly at that, "That was closer to someone's personal fantasy than a documentary."
"I thought it was very informative!"
"It was, now I know the writer has a fascination with Kirk and his choice to make the golden dress shirt slutty."
"The disrespect you lay on a federation hero! The shame!"
Atlanta laughs, unable to say why it's real. She shouldn't be amused when disagreeing with a Cardassian. Even those she was civil with have never been truly safe to disagree with.
Garak isn't safe. He's incredibly dangerous... and yet she is amused.
"I'd be more ashamed to have enjoyed that film."
"Was that a barb?"
"It was a fact, but I do have to wonder about your taste if you actually enjoyed that piece."
Garak shakes his head, "I should know a Bajoran would question me."
"I should know a Cardassian has poor taste."
"What a low, blow, my dear counselor."
"And?" Atlanta challenges.
"And?"
"What do you care? Are you going to do something about it?"
"Perhaps I should."
"Mh, of course, can't let me have all the fun can you?"
Garak smiles, setting a hand on her arm and causing her heart to speed up. "We will just have to see about retribution later."
"I doubt that."
"You do?"
"I'm not scared of your so-called retribution," Atlanta informs as she fights the way her lips want to tug upwards.
The speeding up of her heart is expected, the novelty of a Cardassian touching her without foul intent evident is still fresh and she is... well what she used to be has her wired for fight or fight at any moment.
But...
The way she wants to smile? The honest laughter?
Atlanta doesn't like that.
"Garak! Kingsley!" Doctor Bashir calls as he comes over next.
"My dear doctor! How fortunate to see you."
"Hello, Bashir," Atlanta says warmly.
"You look lovely, perhaps you'll allow me to buy you a dfink?" Bashir suggests.
"Maybe next time," she smiles like she always does.
"Oh come now, Counselor how much longer will you make him wait before you stop making our dear doctor chase you?" Garak goads like the nosey man he is.
"I've never done anything to try to make anyone chase me, my dear tailor."
"Then you'll let him but your next drink," Garka says.
Julian smiles. "I promise I'll be a gentleman."
Atlanta feels something in her flutter and shift — for a moment she feels like the girl she had to burry to become herself.
Oh.
Oh no.
No.
The way Garak smiles at her makes her stomach flutter like it does when she's close to home and anticipating.
Bashir's eyes are so pretty as he waits for her answer and she can't tell him no again.
"One drink, and we can see about me buying you one next time," Atlanta says with a smile that's too genuine for her own good.
She is so incredibly screwed.
Julian Bashir is one thing, foolish to get attached to because of who she is but there's no personal wrong — no moral implications. He's sweet, vibrant, and optimistic.
But Garak? Elim Garak? Ex member of the Obsidian Order who has committed crimes even Atlant can't name? The cardassian? Unacceptable.
She — needs to leave. She needs to get her head on straight.
She feels sick.
"Actually... Can I ask for that drink tomorrow? I — think I need to go check on my brother." Atlanta says, standing.
"Wha— yes. Of course," Bashir smiles.
"Brother?" Garak asks.
"Brother," Atlanta agrees, already walking away.
She needs — she actually does need her brother. Reuniting has been strange — but she needs him anyway. His presence brings about a sort of serenity that she has a hard time capturing otherwise.
What is wrong with her?
Even if she wasn't Atlanta Kingsley, pride of Federation black ops... She is half Bajoran. She grew up having to fear Cardassia and its people — she only escaped as a child because her human mother fought tooth and nail.
Getting attached to anyone is foolish, she never knows when she'll be forced back to the life she pretends doesn't exists — Julian Bashir is bad for her because he makes her want to tell Section thirty one to take a long walk of a short pier.
Bashir is the sun and stars, warm and vivid and beautiful and a guiding light... getting close will only see her burned because people like him aren't meant for people like her. If he ever learns what she is, he'll be repulsed — she won't even blame him.
Garak, though? That is the most insane thing she has ever had to face. A fondness for the Cardassian — Cardassian! Of all things! — is absurd and dangerous because Garak is a manipulator, a liar, a man who has hands as dirty as Atlanta's own, if not worse. Feelings for Garak, though?
Oh, her father is rolling in his grave, and the prophets will never forgive her — she will never forgive herself.
The little girl she once was screams — as innocent as Atlanta was in a different lifetime, she knew never to get close to a Cardassian even then.
Fine. Feelings are awful, illogical, and untrustworthy. She can survive this. She will simply lock them away. She's done it before. She'll do it again.
Atlanta needs to get it together and remember exactly why she can never, ever have anything further with Bashir and especially not with Garak.
Maybe she can go back through old files on the horrors of the Cardassian occupation to remind herself exactly who she is and exactly who Garak is.
The feelings around Bashir are easier. A few drinks, maybe a date or two and he'll realize she isn't who he wants and they can seperate as colleagues if not friends.
Her feet continue moving until she is outside the door of her brother's quarters.
She knocks, already slipping on the mask she uses for Miles. He deserves a better woman for a sister than Atlanta has ever been, but this is perhaps her favorite version of herself to pretend is real.
The door opens to Miles, also in civilian clothes. He looks her over, giving a wry smile. "Red?"
Something in Atlanta loosens, the nickname from childhood is a piece of the life from before she keeps.
"Goldilocks."
"What are you doing here?"
"I just... could use a break from my own mind. You know how it is."
Miles nods, stepping back. "You're telling me."
"Thank you," Atlanta says as she steps inside.
"Want to talk about it?"
"What do we know about Garak?"
"That... is a strange questions Red. But... not much. He's just a tailor. Why?"
"Nothing important."
"Okay? Well do you want some coffee?"
"Sure, thank you."
"Did I tell you Molly wants to learn as many songs as she can from you? Says you have the best songs, you know," Miles says as he sets the replicator to make coffee.
Atlanta just smiles, "Oh really? I'll teach her as many as I can."
Well... all the ones appropriate for a child to sing at least.
This helps. This is better for Atlanta's health. Her brother is safe, one of the only people she lets close.
"She'll love that."
"I hope so. Oh I was wonder if you could maybe watch Molly for a few days sometime so I can take Molly to see the new arboretum at the next station," he says, bringing over coffee.
Atlanta takes the cup with a smile, "Thanks for the coffee. I can watch Molly, she's a sweetheart. Let me know when, I can track down some things to do."
"I will. Thanks, Red."
"No one else knows why you call me that."
"You dye your hair these days."
"Brown blends in better than red."
"So you say."

Born in Gotham to police officer Jean-Luc Lavigne and his wife Bonnie Lavigne (Neè Lance) who is a nurse, Vivienne stayed with her parents until they died in an unplanned car pile-up with three of four other cars and a truck full of acid driven by a ridler goon. Viv survived, but she had some scars on her back from the acid.
After her parents died when she was about five, she ended up going to live with her aunt Dinah, primarily in Star City. From there, she started therapy and learning how to control her powers.
She went through school fairly normal, she had friends and started cheer. She got into MMA and started getting into music. She grew up happy, stable, and loved. Even if Finah and Oli have a strange family, it's her family.
Vivienne starts being a vigilante at fourteen, taking on the name Nightingale. She uses a combination of archery, hand to hand, acrobatics, knuckles, and her powers to fight.
At sixteen, she transfers to Gotham Academy for their pre-med program and ends up staying with Bruce Wayne for the school year while she finishes her high-school career. She still goes home on breaks and long weekends to see Oli and Dinah.
Cigarettes and chocolate on a late night
After a poorly thought out hookup with more feelings than anyone is admitting to John asks Ivy to stay the night, for safety.
------
Ivy pulls on her oversized band shirt while trying not to let her feelings run wild. She has other things to do, like leaving.
"'S bloody late, love," John sighs, "and it'd pouring buckets outside."
John... still strange to call him that ... but after what they've just done — well John works just fine.
Ivy snorts, "I can tell."
"You oughta stay, for safety, driving in that shite ain't safe," John says before he takes a long drag of his cigarette
"And since when have you cared about safety?" She scoffs, dragging her jeans and underwear on.
"Look, love, I like you alive, you're the most bareable of your kind and side's you still owe me," John shrugs.
Ivy laughs, soft and warm as she shoves her heart back down. That's such a John way to say he cares. Asshole.
"Fine, fine, I'll stay if it means that much to you."
John scoffs at that, "Don't get sappy on me."
"Can I use your shower?"
"Yeah towels are on the shelf. Grab something from the dresser to borrow."
"Thanks."
"Least I can do after you sucked my bloody soul out earlier."
Ivy laughs, moving to the dresser.
She pulls out a sleep shirt to borrow before she goes to shower.

Great divide chapter one
Ivy hasn't spoken to her family more than a few holidays worth of small talk each year since she moved away but with her son missing things will change.
Ivy let's out a string of curses in a mix if languages when her call goes to voice mail for the twentieth time in two days. The curses are creative and she is not nearly satisfied enough with them.
She sets her phone down and takes a slow, steady breath.
"Still no answer?" James asks.
"Why would Bruce ever answer his phone? It's only about his missing grandson," Ivy gives a mean laugh.
James just sighs. "We'll figure it out."
"Oh, I know. I'm going to handle it myself."
He goes still, gaze searching her for any clue. "You don't mean... Cardinal, do you?"
"I can't think of any other sure fire option."
James let's a slow, resigning sigh out. "Me neither."
"How do you feel about getting Alex and helping me out a bit?"
"I - anyone to get our kids back. I just didn't expect it to be this."
Ivy laughs, "Who did?"
-------
Damian isn't sure what to expect, but he is positive something big is about to happen. He sits in the watch tower meeting room in his rarely used Corvid costume.
He watches as Batman lectures again about dedication.
There's a sense of calm, everyone is quiet.
The door to the meeting room slides open and a familiar figure stalks into the room with immaculate posture and silent steps.
A woman with her hair in two French braids and a costume long retired.
Cardinal.
Ivy.
"What are you doing here?" Batman asks sharply.
Ivy Wayne who drifts from her family after she retires her cape and moves to California. She loves them but they're so busy being heroes they forget to reach out.
The bat family loves eachother, deeply. With every complicated relationship the love is there!
Her family is so so proud of her for quitting and staying out. They're proud of her for becoming a therapist. They're proud if her. They live her.
The only family members that remember to reach out without a Holliday are Damian, Jason, and Cass and even they don't reach out iften. It's usually just a picture or a 'hope you're alive' text. It gets to the point where she only goes to family gatherings so her kids can see her family.
Honestly? By the two year mark of her retirement her family's coworkers and friends know more about her life. She was the baby sibling that the titans and outlaws loved or the baby girl the justice league loved.
Roy talks to her every few months, and he sometimes leaves Lian with her if no one else can take her. He visits when he's in town.
Starfire has an active social media friendship with her and sends thoughtful cards for birthdays.
Green Arrow is in Star city, he probably has the most contact with her. He's her Uncle Ollie anyway! He goes to as many events and parties as he can. He invites her over for visits.
Black Canary is also pretty in touch with Ivy, she sees her a lot and lives in Star Cuty with Oliver. She's a psychology mentor to ivy.
Hal Jordan is in Coast city, and he is close with Oliver so he sees Ivy at gatherings and probably has a social media friendship
Superman knows more about her life because even if he dosen’t visit often he does pay attention to the sound she and her family makes.
Wonder woman dosen’t live in California anymore but she visits sometimes so she swings by to see Ivy every so often when she's there. She exchanges emails sometimes.
One day someone asks Bruce about Ivy in front of the justice league and he just... dosen’t know? But Green Arrow does.
Someone asks Dick about his sister and he... has no idea what her plans are for her vacation? He didn't know she was planning one? But Starfire knows!
Jason dosen’t know that Ivy broke her femur last week but Roy does.
Tim isn't sure what she's doing with her tach skills but Cassie does because Diana was talking about it.
Ivy Wayne is NOT a daddy's girl. Oh sure, she loves him dearly, she trusts him, but she ISN'T a Daddy's girl.
She's a Big Brother's girl. She will ALWAYS run to Dick and Jason for help or advice first. She will Always seek their approval First.
After she comes back... she suppress it but it's there.
But more than just a Big brother's girl, she's Jason's girl.
She adores Dick, she thinks he's awesome but when she was going through her own rebellion Dick was something else and Jason wasn't.
Jason was right there, teaching her life skills and PROMISING to help her run away if it gets bad.
Jason is who she Most imitates as an older sibling. You see plenty of Dick in there too sure, but Jason is louder.
When she gets married (and forgets to tell her family) she has Jason as a witness.
When Ivy Wayne leaves behind the vigilante life she leaves behind all of it. Unfortunately that means she drifts away from her family until all she has is stilted birthday calls and strained Thanksgiving and Christmas.
When she loses her wife and a close friend to a hero mission she drifts even further. She won't even touch case files to help anymore. She's done
When Ivy has a platonic marriage to her best friend/ platonic soulmate she drifts even further because she's grieving and it's her three best friends and retired teammates that help her. Not her family, not really.
Ivy would have stopped calling the way that her family but her kids deserve to know their family too. So she keeps trying.
She's a suburban mom on the pta now, she's a youth therapist with a specialty in foster kids. She stays fit and she still could fight most people but she Dosen’t anymore. She'll clock a mugger but she's not chasing robbers.
Any you know what her family thinks? They are all SO PROUD of her. She's the first of them to actually Leave and Stay out of the cape life. She's the only ome to leave and not get pulled back in.
Bruce NEVER wanted his kids to make their life mission justice the way he has. Unfortunately through trauma and his own mistakes many of them have (because they think THAT'S what Bruce wants and it Isn't.) He's so proud of her. She has a good life and a good support system. She finished school and contributes to her community. She has firm boundaries and she dosen’t take shit. His baby girl is exactly what she WANTS to be.
Dick is grateful. He always wanted her to be safer than he was. He lost her once he couldn't do it again. He's so proud of her for following her heart and not getting stuck like he has. Dick is the first child hero, but she was the first to leave volluentarily and stay gone. He misses her but he would never try to trap her again.
Jason is so proud he screams it from the rooftops. If anyone asks where Cardinal went he just says she retired like she deserves. Jason is HAPPY his sister is both out of the cape AND out of Gotham. He's jealous that he couldn't find the security of self to separate from the mask but he doesn't hold it against her. That's HIS Baby Sister and she took her life by the balls and made it what she wanted!
Tim is jealous, sure because anytime he gets out he gets dragged back, but he's proud of her. He's never seen anyone retire with an injury and stay that way but here she is doing it. He's so proud that she Beat The Odds. She's part of why he hopes he can get out for good before it kills him.
Damian is SO PROUD of Ivy. That's his big sister and she made something of herself the hard way. She didn't follow the easy path that either family legacy gave her, instead she worked really hard to forge her own path. She is Damian's role model and his hope to be able to become the doctor he wants to be. He's proud of her choosing herself. He's proud of her getting her degree. He probably talks to her the most, even if it's strained. He goes to every major event for her and her kids and he visits them once a year but it's still a stilted relationship. He still dosen’t call often.
Cass is proud too, she understands Ivy on a deep level and can SEE how much better this new life is for her sister. She's glad her sister chose herself and she always sends cards with long messages because even if they don't talk much they're family. She's so incredibly pleased that her sister was able to choose her own path even if it lead away.
Duke is happy for her! He is, he just is always so busy he can't really stay in touch. He's glad she's raising her kids somewhere safer and he's got her psych school graduation picture framed. He looks up to her, as an example of choosing your own path, even if his path IS vigilantism. He dosen’t understand her life anymore but he's glad she's happy.
Steph probably understands the choice to leave the best. She jealous and a little resentful because Steph had to Fight to be accepted as a hero and Ivy didn't so why woukd Ivy just leave? But Steph sees the appeal. She is glad the kids are out of Gotham, it's just a lot of inner issues at play... but she isn't mad, she doesn't hold it against Ivy.
Babs is with Jason. She is SO PROUD of Ivy for getting out and making a life for herself. She understands the cost and strain of her life. She knows what it's like to lose it all. She's so incredibly grateful one of her girls left before it killed them.

Cardinal/ Ivy Wayne retires fully at 21 and moves to Cali with her wife and son
Her wife retires a year later
Within two years the other four of their Teammates retire and move out to California and keep their found family/ community
A year after the last of them retires there's a world ending emergency and everyone but Ivy takes their cape up again (Ivy can't go she says someone has to be around for their kids)
Two if then die (Pandora / Aurelia amd Gold/ David)
This leaves Ivy and her best friend James with dead spouses and children to raise.
A year after that Ivy and James marry eachother PLATONICALLY. There's a whole list of reasons, mostly about guardians of their children and spouse rights
So now it's four retired heroes
Ivy and James raise their kids together, both parents to all kids. (The kids are 6-2 at this point when they marry)
Bella and Alex are married too but no kids
