songs about Falin Touden
fun fact: the Orcs of Dungeon Meshi aren't actually very tall. Zon is unusually tall by Orc standards and he's still shorter than Laios. Leed is less than five feet tall
once again, almost the exact opposite of Falin's actual main character flaw
what was with this fight and ironic deaths for the female members of Kabru’s party?
there's this one thing i keep encountering where i'm always like "no c'mon, i can't get bothered by this, it's literally the stupidest thing ever," but the more i think about it the more i think it's geninuely a good example of how fandom overwrites actual characterization for the sake of popular fanon or a dumb joke or a dumb popular fanon joke
so fine, here it is: why do some people seem to be afraid of the idea of Falin showing the bare mimimum of politeness to Shuro lmao. every time i see a shitpost where Falin ignores Shuro in some over-the-top way, or is even outright callous to him, it feels so weird. what character is this. that's not how Falin acts at all. that's pretty much the exact opposite of how Falin acts!! it's arguably what her entire character arc is about, the fact that she's nice to Shuro (and everyone else), so nice to Shuro (and everyone else) that she'll ignore her own needs and desires for the sake of other people- the inciting incident of the entire story hinges on her being self-sacrificing to a fault!!! the conclusion of her character arc is gently rejecting Shuro's proposal in order for her to live the life she wants to live, because that's a huge deal for her! i should be fine accepting it as the whole normal exaggeration of traits for a joke, but this is literally Falin's big Thing!!!
putting aside my thoughts on the continued loserfication of Shuro, i think the explanation is non-malicious if really dumb- people want to make memes lmao. not just the "slapping the name of characters on the same text post you've seen on every other incorrect-iwtv-blog" variety of memes (there's a lot of those though), but people just want to make funnies in general, and "Falin is polite towards Shuro, though she also displays the same faint distant, melancholy air she displays with everyone else" probably seems harder to squeeze into the same jokes that go big than "Falin dunks on Shuro because she's in love with Marcille". and i truly don't want to police people's jokey-jokes- but again i have to stress, this is arguably the crux of Falin's character. what's the point of trying to do these jokes with Falin when they're so unfitting? if you have to make Falin so different, is it really a joke with Falin? anyways, if you want to make jokes about Shuro getting dunked on by a girl, Marcille is literally right there lol
at first glance i would say Hien and Benichidori both fulfill that common character thing of “they come off as X, but are secretly actually Y” with Hien being “she comes off a serious and all business, but is actually cool and kind of overly proud” and Benichidori as “she seems collected and quiet but is actually deeply anxious and neurotic”
buuuuut also i wouldn’t say Hien is necessarily hiding that part of herself. there isn’t canon confirmation, no (these two get so few scenes in canon lol) but the impression i get from Hien is that she isn’t trying to conceal that part of her personality, she’s just keeping it separate from her work. she’s cool but when she’s on the clock she’ll be serious. we know she’s pretty loyal to the Nakamotos so it makes sense that she would want to give her best for them. and Benichidori… well, we know what she’s like from her character comic. she’s constantly wearing a mask, emotionally and physically (if we consider makeup a mask), because she’s horrified about the idea of people around her judging her. she’s definitely hiding that part of herself
Benichidori clearly appreciates her relationship with Hien deeply, but i do wonder if she has noticed that difference between their “masks,” and if she can’t help but resent it a little
Hien’s main characterization in the comic proper is basically “yeah she’s Maizuru’s 2nd in command and she’s basically exactly what you expect from that combination of words,” very no-nonsense, all about the job, which in my opinion serves to makes her “yeah i know i’m hot what more is there to say” attitude even better

something i've noted about Daya which is essentially impossible to notice without looking at Ryoko Kui's side art- when she's not dungeon-ing, she shows a preference for dresses and, dare i say, has "girly" tastes. it's more apparent in the "modern" drawings and special illustrations but even in the side art taking place "in canon" (ex: the green dress with a belt) that seems to be so. even in the themed special illustrations she'll typically have some extra details in her outfit- for the Santa illustration, she gets those pom-poms on her shoes and those lacy gloves, for the Daydream Hour cover, she gets those ruffled long bloomers (not sure if this is the right phrase for that lol)
this one might be stretching it but even here you can see her outfit has details Namari's doesn't (the little bows, the ruffled hem and sleeves)
as i said, from the main series alone you probably wouldn't be able to pick up on this... with one exception. during the Treasure Bugs segment, Kabru's party is excited to find the box of "treasure," but specifically for its monetary value
(even Rin's rare show of excitement is later clarified as a desire for cash lol)
but poor Daya really did just want the necklace
Daya and Kabru's dynamic is interesting especially when you remember Rin's scornful "what, are you going after dwarves now" comment
he's apparently chivalrous with her and the idea of them developing romantic feelings for each other is so off-the-table it's laughable for the others. but is it only they're a dwarven woman and tall-man man? that's a bit sad to think about... though if we remember the "tall-men tend to look feminine to dwarves" tidbit from the shapeshifter chapter, it might not actually be "Kabru wouldn't want a woman like Daya" so much as it is "Daya wouldn't want a man like Kabru"
it's so funny how i could instantly tell which of these were ai before even looking at the source. She Would Not Make That Fucking Face
tabbing through Maizuru's Death By Faligon frame-by-frame while keeping this little tidbit of trivia in mind
do you think that, as Daya experienced the feeling of her windpipe being crushed by Faligon- the laughable helplessness, the sensation of her lungs burning for air that would not and could not come- she had a thought along the lines of "god fucking dammit, not again"
do you ever think about how Izutsumi’s subconscious image of “mother” had moles
