An important attribute of a successful Internet meme includes its susceptibility, or timing, specifically the extent to which it is relevant to the interests or values of an audience (Knobel and Lankshear 202). Due to the fact that the majority of those who consume Internet memes are of a similar...

Happened to stumble across this video and it made me think about what we were talking about in class. Â About how much the KJB has influenced the English language.

Anxiety Cat is one of my favourite memes on the Internet. Anxiety Cat is part of the Advice Animals series, and it features a scared looking black cat accompanied by captions that relate to social agony and anxiety (Know Your Meme). Popular examples on Know Your Meme include the captions that...
Popularized in 2012, “The Successful Black Man” meme (more shockingly referred to as “The Successful Negro”) is notable due to its offensive irony, racism, and the fact that it is a prime example of Western world hegemonic ideologies. The meme depicts a “handsome African American business man...

Weekly MIT3652 Email
G'day, g'day,
Hope everyone survived the Super Bowel festivities and the Amurican spectacle that was on display this weekend. Am I the only one that finds it kinda weird that Americans always need to have fighter jets or attack helicopters fly over head after the singing of the anthem? Shouldn't we be terrified by the sight of death machines hovering overhead? What a strange display of power that is interpreted as a moment of patriotic pride...
This Week in 3652, whut it do...
For this week we are going to have a short lecture talking about communicative styles and rhetoric as per the assigned Peters reading followed by an attempt to answer the question "Are Internet Memes new?" There seems to be a popular instinct to talk about memes as though they are this brand new phenomenon, never before seen because "the Internet" is what makes them possible. Tomorrow I will argue that this is not the case, but rather, we have been seeing memetic texts for as long as humans have been communicating, a process that has just been amplified by mechanical reproduction.
Assignment Corner
I haven't had a chance to mark your 2nd round of blogs yet, had some other urgent deadlines to meet last weekend, but intend on getting to on that this coming weekend. Hopefully marks will be released by Sunday night (fingers and toes crossed)
More importantly, though, the second half of lecture tomorrow will be focused on the most pressing assignment, the upcoming midterm. Normally I like to run a study session before the midterm but because scheduling is so tough I have decided to just dedicate an hour to doing a study session in class. What this means, though, is you will be responsible for bringing questions/content to discuss for the remainder of class. I will be supplying some sample questions for us to work through, but really this is an opportunity for you to get answers on any of the course content that you are struggling with leading up to the midterm, so please take a second or two tonight to think about what stuff you are having trouble with so we can discuss in class. Also it's probably a good idea if you bring the course text books/course pack/notes along with you tomorrow to better assist you in answering questions as they come up.
Lastly, if you have not submitted your group names and the movie you'd like to swede, note that this is due at the end of the week so SUBMIT ASAP! Are you not in a group right now? Let me know ASAP and I will assign you to a group. Are you already a group and I assign someone to you? Please include this new group member as best you can. Thanks!
Office Hours
As per usual, I'll be in NCB441 from 1 to 2pm this week. Come by for a hello, a chat, or to get insight on the course. Don't be shy!
See ya'll tomorrow

It’s Over 9000!

Weekly Email
Buenas noches! Hope everyone had a dandy weekend. Tonight's email is going to be brief because screw it and also because I don't have much to say!

This Week in 3652, whut it do?
We're going to begin our descent down the theoretical rabbit hole this week by working through some theories that will be very important for our business of exploring meme culture. For this class, we will be taking an ethnographic approach to the study of memes, meaning it is important for us to live amongst the digital folks, observe their behaviours and interpret what these things may or may not mean.
For those of you who were in my class last term, MIT3435F: Disability in Pop Culture, parts of this lecture will feel a bit repetitive and for that I apologize. At the same time, there will be some new stuff so it's not all bad news.
One of those new things is going to be a discussion on Be Kind, Rewind followed by an explanation of the group project/final essay. How jacked are you for that?
Assignment Corner
As you may or may not have noticed, all 5 blog posts are now open for submission on OWL. I decided to open all of them at once in case there were any eager beavers out there but I would STRONGLY recommend you don't get too far ahead of yourself (ie: don't just write up 5 analysis tonight and submit). I would suggest it might be best to stick to the due days and, at the very least, wait to see my comments on your work before moving on to the next piece. As I mentioned in class, this assignment is accumulative so you will want your work to evolve with you and your growing knowledge on the subject. Groovy?
Office Hours, fo rizzo
I'll be kickin' it in NCB441 again this week, Wednesday from 1 to 2pm. Come visit.
Please. I get so lonely...
