It was an absolutely wonderful celebration of two superb folks and such a privilege to be there.
And getting to hear the Final version of the 6-Months-in-a-State-of- Perpetual-Redraft Speech of course.
And the band played some absolute bangers. Glad I brought my proper shoes so we could do them justice 😁

Freddie’s weekend was awesome.
I am still suffering.

on a scale of 1-10, how scary are babies?
So many variables to this question. So many.
Whose baby is it? Am I responsible for the baby? How responsible am I for the baby? Are the parents nearby? Do I know the parents?
For example, making silly faces at a random baby on public transport to get the satisfaction of watching them laugh? 0/10 scary, 10/10 excellent.
Being entirely responsible for a ridiculously helpless human potato? Climbing up the scale rapidly there. If they can move? Yikes.
Even more, I hate babies being involved in rescues, because it ups the stakes considerably y’know? Not their fault in the slightest, but it does raise the blood pressure.
But on the whole? 2/10. Babies are very sweet, and you get extra smug points if you can get them to snooze.
Shout out to @mitchmatchessocks’s little girl who earned me many smug points. But who also was still fairly potato sized, took her bottle from me entirely without issue… and then promptly spewed all over my head, down the back of my shirt and in the pocket of my jeans. The very last time Uncle Gordo tried that technique for a burp.
Toddlers and lil’ kids are excellent though, especially when they’re talking and asking questions. They’ve got actual magic. You speak to them and suddenly you’ve gone from a bystander in boring old adult world to fully involved in a three part soap opera involving a dinosaur with a hat and a stick off the ground who’s now a lawyer with a chip on his shoulder. 🙂↔️

When did you find out about Gordon's accident? What was your reaction?
Which one? 😛 I think he just replaced his commitment to swimming with a commitment to getting himself into as much trouble as possible. That or he just really enjoys hospital food.

Fairly quickly, actually, once they allowed the word out. We were at training, all three of us, and someone from Camp Tracy must’ve phoned Coach and he… yeah. Knew it was bad by the look on his face. He told us Gordo was outta surgery and it wasn’t looking good, and they couldn’t tell us any more.
I remember driving home on a call to Freddie and both of us just sitting in absolute silence. I got home and my ex-wife had the holo on with news playing, and they’d got drone footage of the navy recovering the wreck… think we were all convinced he was dead at that point.
But, as it turned out, he remains the most stubborn sonofabitch to walk the planet and refused to die, and there we have it.
Got to see him just after he got out of the ICU, and… couldn’t really believe it was my bud under all those bandages and wires and… yeah. Until he told me I was even uglier than usual when I looked sad and then I at least had confirmation they hadn’t tried to bodyswitch him or something. Anyway, spent a lot of time paying him back for it by sitting making him listen to my training plans (and we started sneaking him out to the pool but that’s a story for another day! 😙)
