You’re the island on the horizon when my heart is out to sea.

“I am not of the lofty image you so generously painted son.” the god spoke with a conviction of truth, eyes downcast as he realized the extent of his child’s exposure those that scream images of conflicting reality. It pained him to imagine the confusion that must course through the young serpent’s thoughts, rich and varied in its deception.
He sighed, drawing his hand over tired features, a shake of his head the simplest of movements, “There is no such great desire in me as there have been in those that have traversed your life in days passed. I seek no glory, for redemption guided by your hand, no forgiveness for days long spent in shadowed pain. I only wish to see my child, my heart longs for your visage.”
Jöri bit his lip softly, unsure of what to do and slightly ashamed of the large part of him that was trying to tell him it was all a show. This is your father, the God of Mischief and Chaos and Lies. The more he thought about it, the more he felt inclined towards the latter part of that sentence, and desired more to believe in the former.
“…Then feel free to behold me. I could no more deny you the sight of me than I could deny the blood that binds us.” With a sigh, something in the Serpent’s human form seemed to let go, and in the blink of an eye, his true form was in its place in a smaller-scale version of itself, all dark scale and spined fin, and two eyes like dying stars in a horn-crowned head like that of a pike and a serpent at once. More in the god’s mind than in spoken word, a voice like a man’s and a woman’s twined together, impossibly deep and echoing, called out.
Behold your child, who is born as much of your magic, and Mother’s, as they are of your flesh.
The god’s eyes widened in a gentle reverence for the gift that was bestowed so kindly upon him, this most precious of honors he had often feared would be denied on little more than the basis of hatred. To see the true form of his child, the form that had haunted his dreams with stunning clarity once more manifested before him was breathtaking.
“My son,” the words escaped the prison of a constricted throat with ease, eyes shimmering in a pride rampant as hands extended as if to stroke the gorgeous scales that adorned his child’s true nature, “beautiful.” a breath little more than a whisper dancing between their flesh, the summation of the god’s emotion that ragged sharply behind the emeralds now fixed upon the magnificent beast before him.
Only one like you would make such a claim, Faðir. Well, in this form, at least. My human form tends to call unneeded attention to itself.
The Serpent let out a sharp snort through his nose, fins quivering and scales bristling slightly at the sensation of someone touching him. It had been some time since he'd been touched in this form last - a few months, since that human girl had met with him - and the memory stung slightly. She had not meant much to him, not yet, but experience had taught him she'd had the potential to.
Huh. That’s pretty fast. Does it hurt?
An’ your dad can do that stuff too?
No. The sensation when shifting from this form to my true one feels like… well, it’s hard to describe. A bit like letting go of a breath you didn’t know you were holding. When shifting the other way, it’s more like biting into something with a very unpleasant texture that makes a shiver go down your back.
Father is a master of shapeshifting and illusion. And many other magics.
That…kinda makes sense. Mine just hurts.
Your dad sounds pretty cool then!
In the literal sense, perhaps. -chuckle- He is Jötun-born, an ice giant by bloodline. He is also Aesir, a god, by the fortune of whatever force decides who is god and who is mere deity. He is the God of Mischief and Chaos, for the most part, and the rest of his domains differ somewhat based on which version of the multiverse he hails from. Many Fathers seem to bear Fire as a distinguishing trait, but just as many wield Ice, presumably due to his Jötun-blood.
...I suppose some would see such a father as a great boon and someone to look up to, but for someone as weak as I, he is merely someone I can never aspire to be, someone to fear, someone whose desire for my fealty could potentially endanger me and anything I hold dear.

“I’m betting on overconfidence. Odin always has always thought he was better than he really is. So the me of your Asgård is still imprisioned then?”
No. Well, in a way, yes. He is on Midgård now, like most of us, but trapped within a human form and rarely allowed to take his true one. It pains him, but he has learned to cope by dealing in the excesses a humanoid form can enjoy.

“Welcome traveler, what is your business here?”
“Oh, nothing in specific. Mere curiosity, and a longing for exchange of words.”
“I see, well friend curiosity is a welcome trait among my men, as for conversation I am more than willing.”
"Friend? Ah, but we shall see." The Serpent chuckled, the sound hollow and lacking in true mirth. "My name is Jörmungandr. I am the Serpent of Midgård. And you, good sir?"
Huh. That’s pretty fast. Does it hurt?

*grins* I bet it’s pretty awesome then, huh?
Well, I am hardly a reliable judge of that. But I am the only one of my kind, and capable of size that seems to impress on its own, even without the addition of scales and fangs and venom.
Fangs? Awesome!
-the Serpent merely grins back, letting his human form’s teeth shift into those of his natural form-
Whooooooa! An’ you can just change back an’ forth like that?
-shifting back- In this form, I can only shift my eyes and fangs to those of my true form if I want to retain the rest of it. I'm not sure why that is, but it took me quite a long time to develop the ability to change into this humanoid form, and have never mastered any others, unlike Father. I suppose only a fraction of his shifting magic is in me, and barely any of the rest, so I am lucky to have this much. Shifting into my true form takes about as long as the blink of an eye, and shifting from my true form to this one a few seconds, simply because it is not as comfortable.

Once more unto the breach. Greetings.
“Hey. So how are you?”
…Well enough, I suppose. And you? Freed of Gleipnir, like some other Fenrirs, or still imprisoned?
“I’m free. I don’t think Gleipnir has a Wi-fi connection.” He jokes.
The gods of your Asgård have grown lax, then. Or overly confident. Both are dangerous. -chuckle-
…anyone ever tell ya you’re kinda scary-lookin’ when you smile like that?
On occasion. I've learned to take it as a compliment. And besides, my true form tends to be considered far more fear-inducing. ...granted, there are quite a few exceptions. The last time a mortal witnessed my true form, they were enthralled by it more than anything else. Or at the very least, they put on an act they were. I do not care to tell whether the sentiment was genuine.
