my two cents (spoilers!) about heated rivalry’s ep3 is that tho i was not very moved by the main couple (their lack of chemistry compared to hudcon rlly makes u miss hollanov) i really liked the episode as part of worldbuilding for this story

we see small instances of homophobia and homophobic language in the first two eps but its scaled up in this episode. the characters have all grown up in this environment, shit talking and locker room ragging are so normalised. if even the face of the sport, an athlete with a storied career and still in his prime, cannot be seen with another man, then what hope do rookies like shane and ilya have?

also this idea of not only keeping ur relationship a secret but also being unable to be seen with your partner because the speculations about your relationships and your sexuality can be so wild. his whole career hinges on being heterosexual, he can’t even be seen at a gay bar as an ally.

whether scott clocked hollanov or not, even the implication that shane has anything to do with ilya pushes shane over, which i really loved. it adds to the level of tension in the upcoming episodes where shane will try to perform the masculinity expected from him. won’t write off the series yet but i did get bored this episode.
