Mixed Nuts Presents: People to Watch! Michelle Buteau
For our very first installment of People to Watch, I want to talk about Michelle Buteau.
I first noticed her as the scene stealing subway rider who consoles a freshly dumped Gina Rodriguez in the Netflix Original, Someone Great.
She seamlessly goes from indifferent and slightly bothered while waiting for the train, to yas queen supportive bestie, to over this conversation in minutes and it left me wanting more.

Luckily she is in another female led Netflix Original, Always Be My Maybe as the spunky, blunt, and ready to pop a baby out personal assistant to Ali Wong.
Again she is just the right amount of friendly and giving no fucks. I want to be her friend, but I’m also a little afraid she might hurt my feelings.
Just as I was thinking, “I don’t know who this chick is, but good for her, she’s in two Netflix Movies”, I see her in the trailer for the much awaited Netflix Miniseries, Tales of the City. I’m so ready to watch her in this because while it is a comedy, it also revolves around the very difficult topic of various members of the LGBTQ community finding acceptance, so it sounds like it may be a more serious role for her.
Tales of the City Official Trailer
Obviously, at this point I had to do a deep dive because clearly I had missed the boat on Michelle Buteau.
Who is Michelle Buteau?
Michelle Buteau is a Haitian and Jamaican-American actress, writer and comedian from New Jersey. You may have first scene her in small TV roles on Whitney and Key and Peel (I knew she looked familiar)! While she has had modest but consistent work on TV since 2011, 2019 has been HER YEAR. In addition to the Netflix credits previously mentioned, she appeared in the Rebel Wilson comedy Isn’t It Romantic, and is set to star in BET’s TV remake of First Wives Club premiering later this year.
In addition to her acting career, she currently is doing stand-up opening for Jonathan Van Ness from the Fab 5 (uummmmm who knew he did stand-up? Not I).
She also has a hilarious podcast with Jordan Carlos called #Adulting.
Basically she is a badass, brown, funny gem and I am officially OBSESSED
If you didn’t know about Michelle Buteau, NOW YOU KNOW!
...andd Fun fact, she owns a furniture store in New York with her husband called Vander Most Modern . Look at there cute wittle baby, Hazel’s first visit to the store!
Written by Kali Thomas. Kali Thomas is a Behavior Analyst, painter, actor, writer, and most importantly 1/3 of Mixed Nuts.
Grove premiered last night at #LA48HFP screening group E and rocked it! Goldthunder Productions delivered a poignent, moving film about the difficulties of coping after a school shooting from the teachers’ perspectives. And I’m not just saying that because my girls Darcey and Rodnesha killed their performances! It didn’t make top 2 (stiff competition), but there’s still a chance for it to go to the awards ceremony if it wins the trailer contest! If you voted for the film in the screening, or if you’d like a chance to see it in a second screening, head on over to the face book page and CLICK LIKE to vote for it!
P.S. I’m super proud of these ladies. Me thinks it’s time to see Mixed Nuts Team do some draaaaaaammmmmaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!
2/3 of Mixed Nuts participated in #LA48hrProject with @Goldthunderproductions And their film, Grove, screens TOMORROW, Fri 8/17 at 7pm.
Check out the trailer!
Also, if you’re new to this 48hr thing, then you don’t know about #LA48TrailerContest2018 ! If you like the trailer, head on over to facebook (https://www.facebook.com/events/252892975358067/permalink/253621291951902/), and give it the ‘ol thumbs up. Grove is currently in second place! You’ll also find the link to buy your tickets! ;-)

Mo'Nique is asking folks to boycott NetFlix because she was offered $500,000 for a comedy special. In an Instagram post, she compares her offer to the payment Amy Schumer got for hers: $13 million. She is accusing them of racism and sexism with this pay gap. Is there something to this?
Just a little follow up to our discussion of the Mo'Nique viral video on today's Nutty Girls Podcast.
