Virtually nothing is known about Marlene McKinnon in the book's version of canon, beyond that she was in the order and some details about her death. Because of that, there's a lot of room for making her a really interesting character in the rp world. And yet, despite that, 90 percent of the time, I see one Marlene. That Marlene is a crazy, wild party girl who is in a constant on-again off-again relationship with Sirius and sleeps around.
I hate that interpretation. For one thing, it's boring. Everyone does that. I hate it. Second of all, it defines Marlene solely in terms of a man. I hate it when that happens, and I hate how often it happens in the Harry Potter fandom (Ginny, Lily, etc). Lastly, it makes it easy for Marlene to be the "slutty" one, which is a trope I despise.
My way of solving this headcanon is two fold: making Marlene demiromantic and putting her in a somewhat tenuous financial situation. The first makes it very difficult for her to be the girl who sleeps around. It also makes the Sirius and Marlene relationship more complex, since it's not just about sex; she genuinely cares and has feelings, albeit platonic now, for him. The second means she can't just be the wild party girl. She has responsibilities and concerns. She has to be a real grown up. She must be a real human.
