"Purgy" 24" by 20" Oil / Pastel / Acrylic mixed medium on heavy canvas. This is a painting of my dear good friend Cameron Thorburn. Cam is one of the pioneer "North County" punk rockers. Being younger then us never stopped him from going to all the essential shows and of course all the Executive gigs. He went on to master music and film. The picture I used to paint his portrait was a blurry steal off FB, but once I started to paint it all the memories of seriously crazy events flooded in. I started by rendering on raw unbleached canvas to get a sepia tone on him, mostly soft pastel. The base canvas has 6 layers of various colors. Painted in a sham 69 button and graphics on his tee. I purposely left the tee super white as we always got hassled by our SD punk friends as being squeaky clean. Lots of Generation X , Clash, Sham 69 and other early English punk band references. 100 punks is of importance as it was spray painted in huge letters on an underpass by our house by the infamous Purgy. YES that is a real chunk of 45 RPM vinyl and cassette tape threaded through the painting. There are many other references that you just had to be there to understand.

Ace Hudkins was a American bare knuckle boxer who had a reputation for trouble. In January 1932, Hudkins was charged with “Assault with a Deadly Weapon” in Los Angeles for hitting T. Leonard Park, 38, with his bare fist, fracturing his skull. In August 1933, Hudkins suffered two bullet wounds during a cafe brawl.
