Fate of the Undead (WIP)

◇ As the only being to be brought back to life after a violent end, you must go on a journey to right wrongs and discover the truth or face a bleak fate you know to be significantly worse than even your traumatic death.

◇ Fate of the Undead is a high-fantasy text-based piece of interactive fiction where you can choose how your custom character’s story goes. Loosely based on a medieval era with magic, this adventure is a story with optional elements of romance, trauma, and mystery.

Customise your character’s name, gender, species, appearance, behaviour, and skills.

Choose from six unique backgrounds with their own stories (deity, royalty, prodigy, criminal, dragon, and eldritch vulture).

Romance, befriend, hate, or completely ignore a range of gender-selectable companions (including the healer who saved your life, ambitious demon royalty, an isolated yet powerful being, and a morbid dragon).

Travel around the realms as you complete quests, fulfil personal goals, and evade the grim consequences of your undead state... not all of which are external.

Major Romance Options

All of the following are gender-customisable and player-sexual. More details (like the minor romances and appearances) shall be revealed as the story progresses.

♡ The Healer - Lirrahei ♡

The one who somehow brought you back from death. On the surface they are generally calm, caring, professional, and not easily fazed except in difficult circumstances. You are this difficult circumstance. How will the two of you deal with this life-changing situation? With a soft body shape, Lirrahei is a near visual match for their academic identity, barring their tanned, slightly rough skin from days spent out in the sun. Their brown hair is purposefully neat (short and combed for m!Lirrahei, longer and tied up for f!Lirrahei), framing their brown, doelike eyes.

♡ The Royal - Ulmir(a) ♡

Ambitious demonic royalty of the Necroplane realm who appears to be charming to all yet is undoubtedly duplicitous by virtue of nature and experience. Ulmir(a) is a conventionally beautiful being of power with many connections. They have a history with the dragon MC, softening them in ways they rarely show. Keen eyes can tell they are hiding something, but what? Depicted and awely regarded as conventional royal demonic beauty, Ulmir(a) has unblemished, smooth lilac skin and a lean body. Those cat-ish grey eyes meld well with their regal features (as sharp as their own demonic teeth); long, black hair; and dark, blood-red horns.

♡ The Diplomat - Kazamsu ♡ (Not Currently In Demo)

Kazamsu is a creative dragon who travelled the realms yet was cursed for offending a deity. They hold morbid fascinations and go to great lengths to fulfill their whims. They are currently working as a diplomat for a mage tower but their sights go far beyond. They enjoy companionship but do not allow people to become too close to them. Will you be the one to gain their ungranted affections? (Appearance will be revealed when they appear in the demo.)

♡ The Isolated - Rune ♡

A demi-deity who had a troubling start to life due to the rare circumstances of their birth. They have lived in near isolation from society for many years, leaving them to behave irregularly and act against the norms and morals of the realms… The two of you have history and you are now the only one they have. Will you guide them towards fitting in, accept them for who they are, or push them further into insanity? A wild one in personality and appearance, Rune pays little attention to their messy wolf cut-like hair and their pale skin reveals their more divine and nocturnal inclinations. Their wide light blue eyes come blessed from their godly father but their sharp demonic teeth is a reminder of their royal mother.

Hellooo everyone. So right now this demo is comparatively small (though it may appear large cuz of the word count, this is cuz of all the backgrounds and choices ofc).

Ergo I will not release any more content updates until I have finished chapter 2 and 3 (and perhaps even chapter 4) because I want there to be more of a significant chunk for you all to binge, leaving this as proof of concept until then. This way it stops being more of a premise and an actual story.

I imagine this will be ready around October time but may be a month sooner or later.

Until then I am still happy to release bug fixes, receive feedback, answer questions and hear your thoughts. 💖

And don't you worry about Ditch, they aren't listed as an RO because technically they aren't a major one as they can only be romanced by two of the six backgrounds BUT his time in the main story will come.

Hiii I have a question about the egg we find since its a dragon egg are we going to incubate it??. It cant be that old because I replayed it and ate it.. but I was curious if we would have a little baby dragon with us.

It is indeed a rather fresh egg. You won't have to incubate it necessarily but Lirrahei, at least for now, looks after it and keeps it warm and such with a bit of their magic. I guess that is sorta incubation but MC isn't the one doing it for now.

The egg hatching hinges on a certain choice being made and what is within will stay a secret, I can say the MC can have the hatchling follow them for the rest of the IF if they so choose.

Nobody has guessed correctly what the hatchling is yet though I suppose it is similar to what has been guessed. And lets just say you won't have to wait too long in the book for it to hatch.

Recently found your game and I just wanna ramble about Rune like omgggg I love her. Even though I just met her (on the dragon Mc btw) but the way her eyes dilate watching us im inlove. Also how do the other species options work? I know you will obtain a different back story but will the story line be the same or is it complete different and are certain species hated in this world. Maybe I'll just play the other routes to find out who knows.

Also also, just realised that I didn't answer if other species are hated in this world or not.

I will say it depends. There's no large hatred for any specific sentient species (except for sirens tho their sentience is in doubt and very variable).

However there tends to be certain tensions or looking down on others depending on species e.g. dragons tend to dislike demons and demon royalty. This is partly why no dragons willingly live in the Necroplane (as well as the fact that Necroplane environment isnt suited to dragons).

Any hatred for other species will depend more on the individual's character and experiences.

hi there.

i found your IF and just finished the demo. i really liked it, especially the story; super excited how it continues. i have a few questions:

about the stats (magic/combat/knowledge/persuasion): how important will those be? as in: will there be skill challenges/certain options require to have a certain number in that skill or you fail? OR will those stats only influence the flavourtext, e.g. during a fight the description will vary depending if MC has 0, 1 or 3 in their combat stat.

how important will the hunger bar be? do i have to "worry" that the IF turns into a survival game/do i constantly have to check the hunger bar and plan ahead to have enough food/what would happen if i e,g, dont buy enough food before a long journey and then run out. do i get a game over? etc.

this is a spoilery question for the dragon MC, so its completely fine if you dont want to answer this one: when choosing the dragon background, the MC starts with 3 Magic, which i assume is quite high/since all other stats are at 0, i assume that for this MC the Magic Stat are their "Main Stat" (if we are speaking in RPG terms). now because of what happens in the story, MC looses their magic and here i wanted to ask how long it will take for MC to regain their magic (maybe even only partially)? im mostly asking because i "worry" my MC will feel ""useless"", since their main stat/ability (magic) is not avaiable.

Yey hi, this was a very sweet ask to receive. I'm always very excited to answer long ones like these.

Answers under the cut

Stats aren't important yet but they will slightly be later on. There will be flavour text and different stats will lead to different pathing but it won't necessarily lead to failure, it will depend on what choices you make from there. E.g. if you have 3 in combat you might automatically succeed at something but with a 2 in combat you'll have to make another choice. Since this is sorta power fantasy-ish (especially with certain backgrounds), it will be rare to fail.

For most of the game the hunger bar will only be for flavour text purposes but there will be a few times in the game where you will have to consider provisions and such. There will be multiple chances to get food (boosted by certain stat allocations) so you don't have to worry about min maxing. As for game overs, they won't be a massive problem, you won't have to restart the book or go back too far, I'm working on a certain something.

Magic is kinda a separate stat decided by birth. The other stats all start at 0 for every background too, though this doesn't mean incompetence, it means average skill (tho I am going to update dragon and vulture to have 1 in combat due to their experiences and species). Throughout the story, there will be the opportunity to raise these. Regarding gaining magic ability back, you won't have to wait too long in the story hehe

Yeah, in the future you can break up with an RO and get with another OR back with them (angst and difficulties yay) BUT you can only break up once else that would be a branching nightmare for me.

And you, bold anon, are playing with fire, wanting to break up with Rune. And your impression of them, well... :)

Soft rewrite of prologue content

Added 5k words of chapter 2 content to the demo (I will not let you see more yet hehe)

Fixed bug that cut off some prodigy content

Altered character creation so that it is all in early prologue. Made some of it more subtle.

Yo, yo, tiny delay.

Might just be the perfectionist in me but there's a few things I'm not quite satisfied with in the update so I'm going to push the update back to tomorrow. I don't wanna release something I'm not quite happy with.

Doing a writing marathon today, 7 hours done, 4 hours to go. It has been very productive so far.

Also found a few bugs in the prodigy prologue that may have cut off a route, sorry about that. It'll be fixed in the next update.
