I read a post that said Hector and dad jokes and I just had to do this.

Also for that joke at the end, I literally looked up Spanish puns and picked the one that seemed the most cringe educing.

I'm loving all your Let's Talk Mexico posts! Thank you for all the info! :D I have a question regarding the Land of the Dead - the Riveras all still wear shoemaker aprons, and other people seem to have jobs. Is there some sort of post-life economy? Do people HAVE to work just as they did in life, or do they just keep working for the joy of it? (I can totally see the Riveras making shoes for the joy of it.) Is there a traditional idea behind this or did Pixar do it for the sake of storytelling?

That’s actually a pretty good question!

I’m fairly certain it’s not a traditional idea and it’s actually just a Pixar thing. That said, they did give a small explanation about how things work in the Land of the Dead. 

Now, I don’t know if there’s an economy or a form of currency but the more people remember you, the better off you seem to do. It’s not only about staying “alive” in the Land of the Dead but also how you get to spend your time there.

I mean, just take a look at Hector, Chicharrón and the people who were about to be forgotten. They all lived in rickety shacks at the very bottom of their world while famous people, like Ernesto, practically have palaces for themselves.

We also see a whole bunch of houses where regular people get to “live”, so I’m assuming how many ofrendas you get and how big they are have something to do?

Maybe people barter with what their families send them? 

Clearly there are businesses. I managed to spot a cantina and a cinema, so I’m assuming people work. But it doesn’t seem like you can elevate your social status through work alone? 

The way I see it, you do well in the Land of the Dead if you’re well remembered. Having a job is just a thing you do to spend time, because most people get to spend at least a couple of generations hanging out in the Land of the Dead before being forgotten.

But if anyone has  other ideas, I’m all ears!

Coco Headcanon

Please consider this:

After Miguel’s first single as a musical artist, “Proud Corazon”, becomes a smash hit when he’s only 17, he takes a while before releasing his full album. When it comes, it’s a concept album, with each song devoted to one member of his family who’s passed on. Mama Imelda, Papa Julio, Tio Oscar & Tio Felipe, Tia Rosita, Tia Victoria, Mama Coco, and of course Hector. He tells their life stories in song, spreading the story of his family to the whole world.

It’s seen as an odd, artistic album, but it becomes a cult hit, winning him a Latin Grammy. As time goes on, it’s recognized as one of his smartest and most enduring works. He keeps on reissuing it in extended editions, with a new song every time a member of his family passes on, including Abuelita Elena about twenty years after the events of the movie.

Although he puts out dozens of albums in his life, “Mi Familia” remains his most enduring work. And when Miguel Rivera, one of the most successful musical artists in Mexican history, passes on at the age of 92 surrounded by dozens of family members, he gets to the Land of the Dead to find every member of his family represented on the album there waiting for him, no matter how long they’ve been gone from living memory. Because he made sure they’d never be forgotten.

Lil’ Coco Spoiler

So, if we assume that Coco fits in with the theory that all Pixar movies happen in the same universe, can we also assume that all the Ernesto toys on Miguel’s Ernesto ofrenda (which he’s probably demolished and/or abandoned by now, lets be honest) like the bobble head and the wooden figurine come to life when Miguel is away, a la Toy Story, and serenade each other while simultaneously competing for Best Ernesto?
